Czech-Polish false friends and their use in teaching Czech as a Foreign Language

The diploma thesis focuses on the so called "false friends" in contemporary Czech and Polish. Both languages are first introduced in the context of their linguistic and typological features as relevant to the subject of the thesis. Particular attention is paid to the differences between the two languages, and therefore possible language interferences. Furthermore, the paper discusses the issue of so called "false friends" and, based on the studies of E. Lotko, there were selected four types of false friends (grammatical (according to the grammatical gender of the noun), lexicographical, stylistic and valency false friends) and discussed more. Those lexical units are first characterized in general terms, and are then focused on the apecific "false friends" contained in the Common European Framework of Reference (levels A1-B1 for Czech as a foreign language). The second part of the thesis (based on the acquired theoretical knowledge) tries to design and recommend a methodology for working with so called "false friends" in the teaching of Czech as a foreign language to the target group of native Polish speakers. The lexical means of indefinite quantification in the current Czech

Neurčité lexikální kvantifikátory kvantum jenom udávají (několik), jenom hodnotí (přinejmenším), nebo udávají i hodnotí (většina kvantifikátoru, např. mnoho). Kvantum pouze hodnotí kvantifikátory synsémantické (částicové), ostatní kvantifikátory jsou autosémantické. Částicové kvantifikátory hodnotí nejen kvantum vyjádřené explicitně, ale též kvantum implikované. Autosémantické kvantifikátory mohou být adjektivní, číslovkové nebo příslovcové. Hodnotící složka kvantifikace má relační povahu. Udávané/udané kvantum je velikostně porovnáno s kvantem bázovým a na základě toho hodnoceno jako velké, nebo jako malé. Některé částicové kvantifikátory hodnotí také velikost rozdílu mezi oběma kvanty. Báze kvantifikace může být vázána subj ektivně/intersubj ekti vně, nebo objektivně. Subjektivně/intersubjektivně vázáno je kvantum, které mluvčí v určité situaci pociťuje jako standardní nebo jako nejmenší (už) žádoucí, popř. jako největší (ještě) žádoucí. Objektivně vázáno je kvantum reálné nebo kvantum, které odděluje uskutečnění děje od jeho neuskutečnění. Udávané/udané kvantum může mít povahu mnohosti, rozsahu nebo intenzity. Vocabulary of videogames

This thesis deals with the language of players of video games, especially computer games. The language sample was taken from written as well as spoken sources - magazines, web reviews and Let's Plays - and is limited to action, strategic and RPG games with some overlap with action-adventures. Researched words are mainly keywords of video game players' vocabulary. The goal of this thesis was to describe the language of video game players from several language viewpoints and briefly describe the slang of the players. The first part deals with introducing the researched material, video games as a whole and their history and also the subculture of video game players. The second part analyses the sample in terms of lexical semantics and word formation, describes the extent of adaptation of loanwords, also stabilization of words, neology and the words' affiliation to slang, terminology and common vocabulary. Then the thesis attempts to briefly describe the slang of video game players. Generally, the slang includes a large number of anglicisms and expressions from informatics (in a large part technical terms), while loanwords are adapted to a varying degree. The Czech Language of the Weekly Našinec in 1988

This thesis aims to characterize selected features of the Czech language used in the Czech-American weekly Našinec. The material basis consists of scans of ten issues from 1988. The opening chapters (1) focus on Czech emigration to the USA, specifically on the development of the Texas community and Texas Czech language, and are followed by a description of Czech-American press and its language in the second half of the twentieth century. The next part (2) describes the Našinec and its language in the linguistic research to date and then (3) details are given about the sample chosen for further analysis and criteria of selection of features chosen for the analysis (4). The main part (5-7) of the present BA thesis includes quantitative research into three phenomena which are well documented in the sample and at the same time seem to differ from the situation in the contemporary Czech language. These phenomena are: competition of the prepositions k/ke/ku, the infinitive ending and forms of the third person singular present tense of the verb být "to be". Abstact: The thesis examines the vocabulary of breeders on social networks. For a period of three months, we've been collecting specific language resources in the group of breeders and provides a word-forming and semantic analysis of the found words, including examples of use. It also brings special dictionary of breeder's slang. Based on selected lexemes, it tests the acceptability/unacceptability of specific words outside this interest group. It verifies the hypothesis that these lexemes will be assessed by the non-breeding group as less acceptable or unacceptable.
Teaching Czech Language and Cultural Background Studies at Czech and Slovak School & Community Manchester

This diploma thesis focuses on the Czech language and the Czech cultural background studies teaching in the 5th grade of the Czech division of the Czech and Slovak School & Community Manchester (CSM). Initially, based on the available data, this thesis provides a characterization of the Czech community in the United Kingdom. What follows is a description of the Czech and Slovak School & Community Manchester (CSM) organization, which focuses predominantly on its aims and the form that the Czech language and the Czech cultural background studies teaching of children and adults takes. Subsequently, this thesis provides an analysis of the content of the CSM's School Education Programme and, furthermore, it evaluates the possibility of realizing this programme to the fullest extent within the bounds of the school year. The following parts concentrate on the description of a fifth-grader from the point of view of developmental psychology and the specifics of the CSM students and the teaching of them. Qualitative and quantitative parameters of the presentation of vocabulary in selected textbooks of Czech for foreigners

This thesis aims at the issue of teaching vocabulary and ways how it is processed in textbooks of Czech as a foreign language. Theoretical part of the thesis explains most important terms of language and linguistic didactics, describes the curriculum for teaching vocabulary in Czech as a foreign language and the role of textbooks in the educational process. Based on this information the research part analyzes a representative sample of textbooks of Czech as a foreign language. It compares its vocabulary with the appropriate level of vocabulary recommended by CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). Based on the findings of the analysis thesis provides recommendations for the practice of lingvistic didactics. Typical vocabulary of written cooking recipes in the Czech National Corpus

The aim of the bachelor thesis is to describe the typical vocabulary of contemporary written culinary recipes in the corpora of the Czech National Corpus. The main assumption is that culinary recipes have their own specific vocabulary. A typical vocabulary of culinary recipes is represented by a list of keywords (nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs). Based on the research, it can be stated that culinary recipes have their typical vocabulary. It consists of the names of various types of ingredients, meals, activities related to the preparation of meals, cooking aids and equipment, among others partitives associated with the culinary context (especially ingredients) and the names of organic substances related to good lifestyle. The examination in the Czech language for permanent residence in the Czech republic

This thesis deals with the examination in the Czech language for permanent residence in the Czech Republic. The aim is to identify its basic characteristics, the success rate of the participants and whether it corresponds to the required A1 level. In the theoretical part, basic theoretical concepts of migration and integration and conditions for granting permanent residence in different countries are presented. In the practical part, the analysis itself is elaborated. It consists mainly in the comparison of the exam with the publication Referenční popis češtiny pro účely zkoušky z českého jazyka pro trvalý pobyt v ČR - úrovně A1, A2 and evaluation of its integration potential. Included in the considerations are data on average results and success rates of candidates in the period January 24, 2018 - April 24, 2019. From a didactic point of view, the thesis also deals with the available preparatory materials: a handbook Připravte se s námi na zkoušku z českého jazyka pro trvalý pobyt v ČR. Nový formát testu A1, web portal www.cestina-pro-cizince.cz and related documents. This part evaluates the information about the test and how much the materials correspond to the exam.
