National Ideology of the Sokol Movement in the First Two Decades of its Existence
Formánková, Kateřina ; Storchová, Lucie (advisor) ; Šima, Karel (referee)
The aim of this work is to analyze the linguistic representations in the early texts of Sokol and to show to what extent and how the discourse of Sokol is built on national- ideological grounds. I understand national ideology as a complex principle, yet unbounded and undefinable, which connects and develops certain assumptions, ideas and, in the case of the 19th century, especially ideals for their massive expansion and acclaim. This is happening through a specific Sokol discourse. Within this discourse, I will distinguish between different levels on which the ideals connecting gymnastic and nationalist interests are produced using different argumentative and narrative devices. The work contains of three analytical parts. The first one deals with the discursive mechanisms - repeated argumentation or narrative strategies and rhetorical devices. In the second part, I deal with Sokol conception of the ideal man and the third part deals with question, how specifically the ideal person is involved in the prosperity of the nation, therefore in the declared main objective of Sokol efforts. Keywords: Sokol, nation, ideology, physical education, health
Directing the Course of History. Charles University as the Creator of its own Memory
Horký, Adam ; Pullmann, Michal (advisor) ; Šima, Karel (referee)
The thesis focuses on construction of specific "national" narration of history of Charles University in so called "short" twentieth century (1918-1998). It works with presumption that popular representations of history of Charles University are heavily influenced by Czech national narration of nations' history which roots can be traced as far as to the first half of the nineteenth century. Attention is paid to examination of various representations of the past - written, verbal, visual as well as to changes that the representations of the past underwent during the twentieth century in which several radically different political regimes ruled the Czech lands. While examining various simplifications and stereotypes in narration of the university history as well as personal development of individual historians and their influence on the image of university past, the work tries to show unifying aspects of the narratives of history of Charles University in the period in question.
Metal - music, culture, identity
Hudcová, Lucie ; Heřmanský, Martin (advisor) ; Šima, Karel (referee)
The topic of my diploma thesis is how listeners of metal identify themselves with metal as a music genre and which form of colectivity they generate on the basis of their common musical taste. At first I introduce a short history and development of metal music and then I characterize the concepts of social sciences, that deals with the study of musical cultures and also the concepts of subcultural capital and identity, which I use in my work. The main part of my work constitutes an interpretation of data from my research between metalists, which took place on metal concerts in Prague and on metal festivals in the Czech Republic in the form of participant observation and half-structured and non-formal interviews with listeners of this genre. My research ascertained what does it mean to be a metalist, how important part of life metal represents for its listeners, which shared attitudes and values metal generates, what produces the sense of belonging of metalists and if there is any inner division between them.
The Janus-faced Landscape. Representing the landscape of Rakovnik and Krivoklat in publications of the Rakovnik's Museum Society.
Uhlířová, Tereza ; Šima, Karel (advisor) ; Randák, Jan (referee)
In my Diploma Thesis, I deal with the way how the Rakovnik's Museum Society represented the landscape of Rakovnik and Krivoklat in their bulletins and in other regional publications in the early 20th century. It is a cultural-political analysis of the authors' manner of interpreting the Regions of Rakovnik and Krivoklat as a unified, specific, distinctive, mythmaking region, etc. in their texts, which means how its borders are defined, what elements are considered as the landscape features, how the literary- folkloric image of the region is created, the ways the land could be useful for human and which famous people are connected with this region. The emphasis is also placed on the question whether, and possibly, how the authors' position is reflected in the region's image. I deal with the research issues in connection with the concept of "the landscape as a story" or "the landscape memoirs", i.e. with a constructivist approach to the region, whose constitution is always culturally and socially conditioned. Key words: representation, landscape, museum society, Regions of Rakovnik and Krivoklat Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Narativistic interpretation of selected historical works about the 17th and 18th century in Bohemia
Feuereis, Eduard ; Himl, Pavel (advisor) ; Šima, Karel (referee)
The main topic of the thesis is the monitoring and analysis of narrative structures of historical works based on the basic assumption that a historical text is in some respect a prosaic work. It means that formal structure of historical text can be seen as poetic and, therefore, at least in part, subject to laws creating fictional literature. The main theoretical framework of this thesis is narrativistic work of H. White, which provides tools to analyze the poetic structure of historical text. In addition to the narrative structures of historical text, thesis consider role of the author (historian) of literary work - more precisely, its stylization and functions of the resulting stylization. Primary sources of thesis are Czech historical works dealing with the Baroque, re-catholicisation process and the Reformation in the Czech lands.
