Statue, location, relation - Bohemia in 80's of the 20th century
Péčová, Kristýna ; Klimešová, Marie (advisor) ; Prahl, Roman (referee)
As a subject to my bachelor's thesis I chose the sculptures and installations made by Czech artists during the period of 1980s, which were created with the aim of exterior placement, out of the traditional exhibition spaces represented by museums and galleries. The keynote of my work will be the relation and interactions between a piece of art and its surroundings as well as the concept of space itself and its overlooked qualities that art may help to reveal. I decided to focus on the exhibition known as Malostranské dvorky, which took place in Prague in 1981. The idea that has led to the organization of the exhibition and its specific circumstances will be my main interest alongside the description of the particular works of art displayed and their destiny during and after the official end of the exhibition. Furthermore, I will compare the exhibition held in the intimate and unique atmosphere of the old Prague quarter with art that was produced in the same period of time within the official state commissions for newly constructed housing estates and public buildings, such as department stores, hospitals and more. Last but not least, both phenomenons of Czech outdoor sculpture will be compared in more global context with site-specific artworks. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Johanidesová, Tereza ; Wittlich, Petr (advisor) ; Prahl, Roman (referee)
The theme of this dissertation is a representation of biblical figure of Jewish princess Salome in fine arts. The author of this dissertation focuses mainly attention on the turn of the 19th and 20th century, when the theme of Salome became the fundamental motif of the Symbolist and Decadence art. In this time Salome started to appear very frequently in the world of literature, painting, sculpture and graphic art as well and she epitomized nearly the icon and the idol for the artists of this period. But in fact Salome as one of the figures acting in the New Testament narrative about the death of John the Baptist was a biblical subject with rich iconographic tradition developing systematically already from the Early Christian art. It is for this reason that the part of this dissertation comprises also the brief analysis of the narrative and the outline of his iconography in the sphere of fine arts. The chapters devoted to the genearal characterization of Symbolism and Decadence serve as an introduction into this complicated age, when the reconsideration of previous values in the sphere of fine arts, science, politics and society projects into the visual representations too. With regard to interconnection of literature and fine arts at the turn of the 19th century, the attention is also payed to the most...

Kučerová, Anežka ; Prahl, Roman (advisor) ; Rakušanová, Marie (referee)
This work focuses on forms of presentation and self-presentation of two important artists living at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries - a Czech painter Mikuláš Aleš and a French sculptor Auguste Rodin. It can be described as the so called cult of both artists, which means a perception of artist as an outstanding genius. This type of thinking about artists and their work was widely spread in the 19th century. Mikoláš Aleš (1852-1913) is known for his individual artistic style which was based on the Czech romantism and folk art, his style also partly anticipates Czech Art Nouveau. Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) was one of the most important French sculptors working at the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. He is considered to be a founder of modern sculpture. Many of his statues caused scandals which made him famous and well-known also among the Czech artists. Both artists were highly appreciated by young members of the Manes Association of Fine Artists. This Association was established in 1887, since 1897 the Volné směry journal were published. Mikoláš Aleš became the first elected president of this Association. Members of this Association were highly interested in modern trends in Czech and European art. It may be surprising that young members of the Manes Association were...
