Norwegian Sign Language - History and Present

The bachelor's thesis focuses on history and current status of Norwegian Sign Language, one of the oldest and largest minority languages in Norway. The aim of the thesis is to give a chronological overview of the main historical events associated with the Norwegian Deaf Community and their language. The thesis deals with the first mentions of Norwegian deaf people and their communication in written sources, the formation of Norwegian Sign Language in the first school for the deaf in the eighteen fifties and the development of dialects in the context of establishment of new schools. The thesis deals also with the repression of Norwegian Sing Language by oralistic tendencies by the end of 19th and most of the 20th century and attempts to create a common Scandinavian Sign Language and a standardized Norwegian Sign Language. Another topic described in this thesis is ta start of research and linguistics of Norwegian Sign Language in eighteen eighties and related changes in attitude towards the Deaf Community and their language which contributed to legislative changes reflected in the status of Norwegian Sign Language, deaf people and their right to education. Information on Personal Pronouns of Four Sign Languages

(in English): The bachelor thesis consists of reproduced information about personal pronouns found in language manuals for four sign languages (American, Australian, British and Israeli) and in general language manuals dealing with sign languages. The first chapter provides a description of the content of individual publications, a list of topics related to personal pronouns and the reproduction itself. There is also a summary of publications, which provides a discussion of common and different features in individual interpretations and a comparison of the concept of personal pronouns by individual authors. From the basic texts on the topic it can be read that individual interpretations of personal pronouns are most often discussed with their form and function, non-manual linguistic means, in connection with the category of the verb person, with deixis and with omitting and repeating personal pronouns. Furthermore, the bachelor's thesis will provide an insight into the differences in the concept of personal pronouns in older and newer publications, not only in terms of grasp, but also in terms of scope. Genderlect in Czech Sign Language: sociolinguistic analysis of vocabulary

This bachelor thesis focuses on the topic of genderlect of genderlect in relation to sociolinguistics of the Czech Sign Language. Primarily, the existing approaches and research of this field are described, particularly the research applied to linguistics of various spoken and sign language. Secondly, the thesis investigates whether there are any gender language differences in Czech Sign Language through an analysis of elicited production of native speakers. The results confirm the existence of gender lexical and phonological sign variation. Furthermore, the differences in frequency of usage of certain linguistic means are revealed together with the difference in compositional style.
Current Situation of Sign Language Interpreting in Secondary Schools for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in the Czech Republic

This bachelor's thesis examines the current situation of interpreting between Czech and Czech Sign Language in the environment of secondary schools for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, from the viewpoint of interpreters who are currently employed at these schools. The thesis consists of two parts. In the theoretical part, it firstly analyses available Czech and international literature that is related to interpreting between spoken and sign languages in education. Furthermore, the thesis analyses the national and supranational legislation that is related to this issue. Based on this, a study was conducted. This study consisted of two steps. The first step was questionnaire survey, in which interpreters reflected on the situation in their workplace (requirements for taking up employment, further educational support, work responsibilities etc.) and described how they imagine their ideal work conditions. The second step were semi-structured interviews and focused predominantly on continuing education of interpreters and their work responsibilities. Czech Signs for Selected Toponyms - Prague City's boroughs

This bachelor thesis deals with toponyms (oikonyms) in Czech sign language. The goal was to map the signs of Czech sign language for 112 Prague boroughs. The language material was collected by method of elicitation from 17 respondents. Subsequently, the signs were analyzed, described and classified in terms of the motivation given by the respondents (folk etymology). Part of the work is a CD with videos of the collected material.
Deaf Parents of Cochlear Implanted Children

This bachelor thesis focuses on deaf parents of cochlear implanted children. The introductory chapter of the theoretical part introduces both existing views of deafness. Second chapter describes the possible attitudes towards cochlear implantation - opinions of experts, of Deaf community and also of general public. Views of pediatric implantation are also included, with particular focus on view of Deaf community. The last part presents specifics of cochlear implantation in deaf children of deaf parents in the Czech Republic, Germany and in the USA. The main aim of the practical part is to discover on what basis make deaf parents decision about an implantation of their child and how they assess their decision. Principles of Initialization in Formation of Anthroponyms in Czech Sign Language

This bachelor's thesis analyses the formal aspects of initialization in formation of anthroponyms in Czech sign language. The main objective is to describe how the initials are modified in comparison to the manual alphabet. The first part of the thesis is more focused on theory. Firstly, it deals with the topic of proper nouns in spoken Czech, focus being anthroponyms (especially given names and surnames). Then the author focuses on the topic of initialization and related terminology (two approaches to initialization, local lexicalization, single manual letter signs etc.) and manual alphabet. After that, based on the diploma thesis by Radka Faltínová (2005), the author describes the most common types of name signs in Czech sign language. The material used in the research part of this thesis was taken from the news programme in Czech sign language (Zprávy v českém znakovém jazyce) because of the high concentration of anthroponyms. The bachelor's thesis focuses on mouthings in Czech Sign Language. The base research material is taken from the facebook group Zábava pro neslyšící v ČR and from the TV program Televizní klub neslyšících. According to Czech and English written literature, the theoretical part sums up knowledge of forms, functions and the status of mouthings. The research part is focused on a description of forms and functions of mouthings in Czech Sign Language. The main goal of the form description is to analyse a frequency of mouthings in Czech Sign Language, the main goal of the function description is to make a list of manual homonyms.
