Spatial differentiation of transport supply in Czechia: conditional factors and transport interactions
Květoň, Viktor
Viktor Květoň: Územní diferenciace dopravních příležitostí v Česku: podmiňující faktory a dopravní interakce Abstract Actual transport geography (and social geography as a whole) is characterized by wide range of solved researches (both academic, and commercial), as well as by plurality of methodology approaches. One of actual topics is study and assessment of conditional factors, or determinants, of transport supply (in terms of fitting of population with vehicles and availability of public transport), which are very accented research topic in foreign literature and have became main topic of presented dissertation thesis. Factors and mechanisms of transport opportunities were assessed in the dissertation thesis at example level of Czech Republic. Resolution and analysis of main factors determining transport opportunities was wholly elementary, however only initial phase of systematic transport research. The second level was formed by assessment of transport contact between most important population centres, which is closely related to study of spatial interactions. Presented dissertation thesis summarises outputs of empirical assessment of above-specified topics, which were solved during doctoral study. Thus it is engaged mainly in determinants of territorial differences of transport supply within Czech...
Typology of processes for the creation of new companies within the manufacturing industry in Czechia: a comparative analysis of two regions
Mlnářík, Vojtěch ; Květoň, Viktor (advisor) ; Ježek, Jiří (referee)
This thesis contributes to the currently frequent topic of economic geography and explains the processes for the creation of new companies in the Pilsen and Zlín regions between years 2009-2011. The choice of these two regions reflects their similar structural characteristics within the firm sector and their different horizontal position. The aim of this work is to find out through which processes in the monitored regions new companies are being created within the manufacturing industry and to which extent these processes affect the subsequent economic performance of companies during the first five years of existence. For this purpose, a typology of the creation of new companies based on their initial characteristics was designed and processed. These initial characteristics reflect both the regional dimension in terms of the origin of the key resources for the creation of a new company relative to the hosting region and the consequent different competencies and possibilities of newly created companies. Despite the initial assumptions, the results showed that the compared regions are practically the same within this issue. In both regions, new companies are mostly created through internal processes (branching of activities from existing regional base), followed by a creation without a link to the...
Differentiation of institutional quality and competitiveness of European regions
Staňková, Natálie ; Květoň, Viktor (advisor) ; Pělucha, Martin (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the evaluation of the quality of institutions illustrated with example the risk of corruption in public procurement, and the impact of the quality of institutions on the regional competitiveness. Specifically, it focuses on the relationship between corruption risk in public procurement and indicators of the quality of government, economic performance and innovation performance. The theoretical part deals with the role of institutions in regional development, and institutional factors influencing the competitiveness and innovation performance of regions, as well as corruption and its manifestations in public procurement. The empirical part presents the European interregional differences in the level of corruption in public procurement, and the impact of corruption in public procurement on the quality of government, economic performance and innovation performance. Research shows the corruption in public procurement determines the quality of government across European regions, especially in Western and Central Europe. On the other hand, corruption in public procurement has little effect on the economic and innovation performance of regions. Key worlds: institution, innovation, competitiveness, corruption, public procurement
Evaluation of a long-term influence of on-street parking regulation on business firms locations in the city of Prague
Lukeš, Václav ; Květoň, Viktor (advisor) ; Novotný, Václav (referee)
BC. VÁCLAV LUKEŠ - DIPLOMA THESIS Evaluation of a long-term influence of on-street parking regulation on business firms locations in the city of Prague Abstract Car use is one of the key conditions for many companies to carry out their activities. Limiting the use of cars by regulating parking in the use of public parking space might reduce the competitiveness of some companies through possible lower customer attractivity, limited comfort for commuters from distant locations or reduced supply. As a result, parking regulation can also influence the localisation of companies in the city itself. Foreign studies diverge in a view of the subject and to some extent, they do reflect the cultural environment of the region. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to assess the influence of street parking regulation on their localization based on the example of the City of Prague using quantitative and spatial information about individual companies. Thanks to a significant statistical sample of subjects in the analysis, it is possible to evaluate whether the changes in the horizontal and/or vertical structure of companies are related to the evolution of changes in the regulation of on-street parking in the City of Prague.
Flexibility and localization of work in Czechia, 1991-2011: Analysis of the spatial aspects
Svoboda, Peter ; Ouředníček, Martin (advisor) ; Szczyrba, Zdeněk (referee) ; Květoň, Viktor (referee)
Flexibility and localization of work in Czechia 1991-2011: analysis of the spatial aspects The working process, its arrangement and its consequences have been a crucial part of a development of society in space. Work as a significant factor forming the space gets into the interest of social geography, at least until the Industrial Revolution, which led to a spatial mismatch between a place of residence and a place of work. The process of social transformation, together with the macroeconomic changes affecting post-socialist countries and the mass development of mobile information and communication technologies in the post- revolutionary period, stimulated a significant change in the issues of job localization and the differentiation of forms of work that became less embedded in the sense of temporal, spatial and functional meanings. This transformation led to irregularity of spatial movements associated with commuting to work on the one hand and its delocalization, or disappearance from physical space, and moving to the virtual space on the other. Hence, commuting to work and the relationship between home and work place is one of the crucial topics of Albertov's social geography. However, insufficient attention in domestic literature has been paid to the issue of the unembedded types of work. The...
Exploring structural changes of employment in rural Czechia: territorial approach
Čapkovičová, Andrea ; Jančák, Vít (advisor) ; Květoň, Viktor (referee) ; Konečný, Ondřej (referee)
The thesis searches for driving forces behind structural changes of rural employment in the example of Czechia subject to changing rural paradigm and the related question of rural economic viability represented by the employment performance. The research elaborates on the territorial approaches which categorises regions according to their degree of rurality. In addition, the detailed classification is made according to the change of non-agricultural employment in the period 2001-2011 in order to identify dynamic regions which showed performance above national average (leading) and those which lacked behind (lagging). The observations prompt the question why is the performance differentiated. Therefore, the regionally differentiated impact of processes such as deagriculturisation, deindustrialisation and tertiarisation in the period 2001-2011 is analysed by the use of analysis of components (namely shift-share analysis) and multivariate analysis (namely factor and cluster analysis). The thesis aims to provide answers in particular by giving a thorough analysis of how the changing rural paradigm (and regional theories in wider context) conceptualise the driving forces behind employment development in rural areas. The added value is in the analysis of interrelations and correlations of chosen...

Sachl, Jan ; Květoň, Viktor (advisor) ; Kostić, Miroslav (referee)
High-growth firms in Czechia: geographical and sectoral specifics Abstract This theses focuses on high-growth firms in Czechia, defined as firms with a predetermined year-on-year increase in turnover between years 2012 and 2015. First part is about putting high-growth firms to the context of selected theories of regional development and it also discuss factors of the firm's growth. Further the high-growth firms are analyzed with an emphasis on spatial, sectoral and other specifics. A part focused on revealing specific factors of business growth uwing qualitative methods is also included. The analysis shows that high- growth firms in Czechia are concentrated to metropolitan areas, and whole one third of them are based in Prague. High growth firms are concentrated to the manufacturing and retail and wholesale sectors. The work has suggested that individual companies may have different growth factors and and there is no one specific strategy for a successful firm growth. Keywords: High-growth firms, gazelles, economic geography, small and medium-sized enterprises
Utilization of Educational Attainment of Foreign Migrant Workers in the Czech Labour Market
Valenta, Ondřej ; Drbohlav, Dušan (advisor) ; Květoň, Viktor (referee) ; Bahna, Miloslav (referee)
This doctoral thesis addresses one of the most significant topics in contemporary research in international migration; that is the education-occupation mismatch of highly qualified foreign workers in the labour market of a host country. The thesis focuses on the situation in the Czech labour market in the time-period between 2009 and 2016. By the possibility to utilize a unique set of non-public, anonymized individual data on foreign employment this thesis provides a first thorough empirical evidence on the level of mismatch of skilled migrant workers in the Czech labour market, with a dominant focus on quantitative approach to the given issue. Results of the research reveal that the mismatch between the migrant employees' attained (tertiary) and required education at their job occupations on the Czech labour market does exist and it is encountered by 20-30 % of tertiary educated foreign workers; moreover, level of mismatch has been gradually increasing over the given time-period. The differences in the level of mismatch then fundamentally differ across particular citizenship groups. The resulting level of mismatch of highly skilled foreign workers in the Czech labour market seems to be driven predominantly by broader social and economic drivers. More specifically, these are particularly a limited...
Analysis of concentration, ownership structure and integration tendencies of breweries in Czechia
Forman, Martin ; Květoň, Viktor (advisor) ; Slach, Ondřej (referee)
Over the last ten years the phenomenon of opening new microbreweries has reached Czechia. Since 2008 more than 350 new microbreweries have been opened and the map of breweries has recorded significant changes. Regarding these facts the main goals of this thesis were to analyze the brewing industry in Czechia in the context of ownership structure, concentration tendencies and mergers and acquisitions activity. First part focuses on the characteristics of the breweries' geographical layout related to the ownership structure and size based on annual beer production and in context of selected socioeconomic indicators. Following this part is an analysis of decomposition with use of concentration and cluster ratios. This part aims on cluster forming tendencies of brewing companies. The analytical part is completed with mergers and acquisitions characteristics in this industry sector. The basic figures and signs of the geographical decompositions were identified based on selected analytical methods and complex maps. Several concentration zones where breweries tend to cluster were labeled using the cluster analysis. Mergers and acquisitions reveal the difference in integration activity according to the brewery size. Key words: brewing industry, breweries, ownership structure, concentration, cluster, Czechia
