The life of ex-Yugoslavs in Prague: community relations and integration
Columby, Nikola ; Klsák, Adam (advisor) ; Janská, Eva (referee)
This thesis studies the spatial distribution, integration and the diasporic nature of the ex-Yugoslav community living in Czechia and Prague. Theoretical concepts used are community studies, transnationalism, segregation, diasporic communities, and integration. Compared to other ethnic minorities in Czechia, ex-Yugoslavs are generally overlooked by research in social science. This immigrant generation is also the first instance of war refugees coming to Czechia in its modern history. The study of ex-Yugoslavs in the Czech society can potentially be useful for the future (research) of migration to Czechia. The first part of the thesis provides statistical data and a brief history of migration from the Balkans. This is followed up with the qualitative part of the thesis, where 13 ex- Yugoslavs are interviewed as a case study. The responses are coded and interpreted along with quotes. Ex-Yugoslavs display a preference for bigger cities, especially for Prague where they concentrate in the city centre, from whence their numbers radially decrease. The ex-Yugoslav community in Prague displays certain diasporic aspects, a "Yugoslav spirit" and a coexistence among nationalities. Many ex- Yugoslavs came here fleeing war and economic troubles. They have been successfully integrated and many have children,...

Determinants of attitudes towards immigrants in the Visegrad countries
Schlichter, Martin ; Bořil, Vít (advisor) ; Janská, Eva (referee)
The following Bachelor's thesis is concerned with the evaluation of attitudes towards migrants in countries of the Visegrád Group (V4). Its main aim is to analyse the determinants that affect such attitudes. It primarily builds on the work of the group threat theory and social indentity theory. The thesis examines the impact of socio-psychological, socio-economic and demographic attributes, and also includes influences of relevant national and regional contexts. Its findings stem from the evaluation of the 2017 European Values Study dataset using multiple linear regression. The main contribution of this work is the discovery of the importance of Polish national context, followed by interpersonal trust, education, and conservatism. Despite existing theoretical assumptions, age did not turn out to be a significant determinant impacting attitudes in the countries of V4. Institutional trust and empathy played a significant role in terms of polarization in all of the countries evaluated. The impact of other attributes examined, including regional impact, was generally low. Keywords: attitudes, immigrants, Visegrád Group, multiple linear regression, national conte 2
Integration of women with international protection in the context of the State Integration Program and the creation of home
Moutouk, Miriam ; Janská, Eva (advisor) ; Svobodová, Andrea (referee)
The aim of my thesis is to analyze an integration process of women with international protection. The emphasis is placed on women and their migratory experiences. I believe that the role of gender in migration and integration studies is still neglected even though women often experience very specific situations as a result of the gender roles assigned to them by patriarchal societies. I monitor the integration of women with international protection within the context of services provided by the State Integration Program. I am interested in how specific services impact research participants and their daily lives in a new environment. The trajectory of the integration process is examined from the decision to migrate, through leaving the home country, acculturative stress, first contact with Czech society, to present and future visions. One of the tools of the State Integration Program is the assistance provided in the area of housing. I pay particular attention to housing, as I consider the loss of home, the search and reformation of a new one to be key aspects affecting the integration process. The qualitative research interviews resulted in the finding that the State Integration Program does not take into account the individual needs of migrant women with traumatic experiences, mothers, wives and...
Imigration from the Czech lands to Brazil in the 19th century
Polakovič, Petr ; Binková, Simona (advisor) ; Janská, Eva (referee) ; Buben, Radek (referee)
This dissertation on the History of Emigration from the Czech Lands to Brazil in the 19th century focuses on the evidence of Czech nationals in Brazil in a much deeper and more extensive scope than can be found in existing works and research. The topic of this paper describes in detail the life stories of individuals as well as whole families whose origins are Czech, yet whose awareness of "being Czech" has partially or completely faded over time. Czech emigrants left for Brazil (regarding the period my work deals with) as citizens of Austria, or Austria-Hungary, as the union came into existence in 1867. Moreover, many of them were ethnic Germans living in Czech, who later mostly joined German colonies in Brazil. The vast majority of papers concentrates on the issues of emigration in the context of countries where German was spoken, without elaborating further on the countries themselves, despite Austria, later Austria-Hungary, being a multinational state. The country covered a territory comprising several nations of various cultures as well as various official languages. The aim of the dissertation is to single out individuals from the "German group" whose origins can be clearly proved by birth in the Czech Kingdom, or to be more precise, in the territory of today's Czech Republic. In addition,...

Assessment of the contemporary asylum and integration policy in Slovakia
Weberová, Zuzana ; Janská, Eva (advisor) ; Murad, Salim (referee)
Asylum and integration policies are important components of a country's migration policy. Firstly because of their very nature, as they deal with international protection and integration of foreigners into society. However, as it is indicated in this thesis, the functioning of these policies may affect not only how asylum or integration processes are taking place after the foreigners cross the country's borders but it may to some extent influence who comes into the country. This can be caused by how the country is perceived and whether people will consider it a suitable "refuge" and seek asylum there. Also, governments can determine how many people will come to their territory based on various relocation mechanisms. In order to understand the impact and functioning of asylum and integration policies, it is necessary to explore their different levels: discourse, policy on paper and its real implementation. This thesis describes how these levels interact and influence each other. Studying these three policy lines is especially interesting today because the phenomenon of migration was not significant for the public in Slovakia until a few years ago, but in 2015, with the culmination of the so-called migration crisis, it became one of the most important issues in Slovakia, despite the fact that the...
