Štěpánek, Přemysl ; Karlas, Jan (advisor) ; Braun, Mats Rickard (referee) ; Kučerová, Irah (referee)
1 Název práce: Mezinárodní režim ochrany klimatu ve světle závazků vybraných smluvních stran Rámcové úmluvy OSN o změně klimatu Autor práce: PhDr. Ing. Přemysl Štěpánek Školitel: Doc. PhDr. Jan Karlas, M.A., Ph.D. Pracoviště: Univerzita Karlova, Fakulta sociálních věd, Institut politologických studií, Katedra mezinárodních vztahů. Rok obhajoby: 2018 Abstract To complement the current research on countries' action in relation to global public goods, this dissertation examines the strength of UNFCCC Parties' emission commitments and the influence of selected factors derived from rationalism and constructivism on the strength of these commitments in two different contexts, under the Copenhagen Accord (2009) and the Paris Agreement (2015). Using a multiple linear regression analysis on the sample of 27 and 54 cases in the first and the second period, respectively, and as well as through case studies on three important UNFCCC Parties with a strong commitment and variance in values of the independent variables (the European Union, the Russian Federation, South Africa), the conclusions are as follows. The regression analysis in both contexts showed, in line with the assumptions, the positive influence of two factors on the strength of commitments, namely the share of alternative and nuclear energy and economic...
Corporate social responsibility, its role in the framework of sustainable development
Baborová, Lucie ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee)
The growing pressure on pursuing the 2030 Agenda and focus on meeting the SDGs within partnership of all actors is putting Transnational corporations (TNCs) to a new role - a role of stronger power, but also wider responsibility. At the same time the global civil society is keeping an eye on big companies even where they may try to hide. Developing countries are still vulnerable to misbehavior and unfair treatment while with their natural resources they are the birth place of most of the consumers' worlds' products. At the same time they are the place where the need for sustainable development is most pressing. The concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a tool which is growing on popularity a it offers a new approach of a more thoughtful behavior with a potential of moving towards sustainable development. This thesis was a research on this potential or maybe with time more and more obvious connection of the concepts of CSR and sustainable development (SD). It also reveals the growing role and need for participation of the private sector. CSR offers a way to participate for sustainable development in manner which create a win-win situation for both private sector and their stakeholders. However there is the dangerous of not using this tool in a mutual beneficial way. Companies often use...
Economic diplomacy of the Czech Republic from the exporters' viewpoint
Čadil, David ; Parízek, Michal (advisor) ; Kučerová, Irah (referee)
This masters thesis has two aims. First one is to examine and describe positions and opinions of czech exporters on economic diplomacy. For this thesis I conducted a series of elite interviews with representatives from czech top export companies. Second aim is to examine whether the czech economic diplomacy is closer to the preferences of exporters or preferences of the state. In the second part of the thesis, I am performing a content analysis of the interviews, documents of economic diplomacy and statements of main actors of czech foreign politics. The main object of the analysis is the relation of actors towards three selected teritories - Russia, China and EU. I am then comparing the positions of given actors. This thesis concludes that we cannot say for sure whether czech export strategy is based on preferences of state or preferences of exporters.
The impact of natural resources on the intrastate conflicts in international relations - sale of booty futures in the African civil wars
Pazderník, Martin ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Werkman, Kateřina (referee)
This master's thesis deals with the potential impact of natural resources on intrastate conflicts in Sub-Saharan Africa. The major aim is to investigate the general validity of the resource curse theory and of Ross's hypothesis about selling booty futures in civil wars. The presumed negative influence of both theories is tested on the cases of recent intrastate conflicts in the region, namely in Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo, Liberia and Sierra Leone. However, the main contribution of the thesis is probably the analysis of another case, namely Botswana, which, unlike other countries, appears to be out of the generally valid standards of the resource curse theory, as the only one experiencing long-term positive economic growth. The partial aim of the thesis is also to analyze the Botswana's success in managing natural resources and then to suggest some possible recommendations for other states in the region. The thesis is written in the qualitative approach, particularly in the form of thorough work with academic literature. The research method is the Method of Difference by John Stuart Mill, in its revised form of the Most Similar Systems Design.
An energy-efficient Europe. Securing the energy supply of Finland
Strang, Mira Inkeri ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Parízek, Michal (referee)
This thesis focuses on analyzing the themes that arise from the Finnish energy discourse between the years of 2009-2018. Finland is completely dependent on Russian gas, but as a member state of the European Union (EU), it should consider reducing this dependence and moving towards a common energy policy as a key objective. The EU has struggled to project itself as a unified whole to the global community owing to the fragmented nature of its decision-making regarding the use and procurement of energy. This results in EU member states having bilateral energy relations with Russia. Energy policies differ depending on the member state, also the geographical location of a state plays a significant role. As energy consumption rapidly rises and climate change becomes increasingly evident, non-fossil sources of energy must be taken into use. The development of technology along with the use of renewable forms of energy will further facilitate the battle against climate change. In order for the EU to succeed in one of its major objectives becoming independent in energy matters, it requires to further increase the internal cooperation between member states and to develop an even further consistent energy strategy. With the combination of the chosen theories together with examining the collected research data...

The Republic of Cyprus as a specific member of the European Union
Tupá, Markéta ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to characterize the most important specifics of the Cyprusʹ membership in the European union and to describe the influence of these specifics on the relationship of Cyprus and EU or the relationship of Cyprus or EU to other states. The most important specifics are related to the so called "cyprus problem" because the island has been divided into Greek and Turkish part since 1964. The whole island is reprezented by the Greek Cypriots only and acquis communautaire is exercised only the Greek part. This work deals first with relations between the Republic of Cyprus, Turkey and the European Union. The next chapter deals with the Cyprus problem, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the role of the European Union in the solving of the Cyprus problem. The last chapter examines the relationship between Cyprus and Russia and the influence of this relationship on the relationship between Cyprus and the EU.
China's energy security and policy towards Africa
Harmašová, Natálie ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Karmazin, Aleš (referee)
The goal of the thesis was to shed light on the ways in which the People's Republic of China secures its energy security and identify the role of Chinese investments in Africa. The economic development results in increased demand for energy resources. In 1993 China became a net oil importer. Conceptualization of energy security in China consists in strengthening relations with oil-rich countries. In certain areas such as industry, transportation and military oil represents for now to that extent of use an irreplaceable source of energy. Therefore I will focus on activities of the People's Republic of China. More specifically, I will focus on investment activities of China in Sudan/South Sudan and Libya. Compared to the West, China seems to be a convenient business partner as it abides by the noninterference into another state's affairs rule. The rationale behind this principle is that every state has a right to choose its model of governance development while taking into consideration its unique conditions. Additionally, China puts emphasis on mutual benefits of South-South cooperation and does not condition investments with the request for changes in political system and banking sector of a recipient state. China chooses its partner countries based on political and stability and state of security...
The European Union and the adoption of the Stabilization and Association Agreement with Kosovo: the role of material interests and shared ideas
Procházka, Karel ; Karlas, Jan (advisor) ; Kučerová, Irah (referee)
The thesis seeks to examine the underlying motivations behind the conclusion of the Stability and Association Agreement between European Union and Kosovo on the 27th of October 2015. To determine the role of material interests and shared ideas in the process of concluding the SAA the thesis discusses and applies rationalism and constructivism, both grand theories of international relations. To test the theories and their respective hypotheses identifying the role of the relevant concepts, the research employs a single case study method, using a congruence analysis approach. In conclusion, through the rationalist lens within the perspective of the EU, the thesis confirms the existence of material interest in the conclusion of the SAA, representing security, power and economic gains. To complement the analysis via a constructivist lens within the perspective of Kosovo, the thesis solely implies a limited role of identity and norms while it points out that such constructivist concepts rather impeded the reaching of the SAA, veiling the actual role of material interest.
Turkey and Strategic Interests of the EU - Analysis of the Migrant Crisis
Krejčová, Romana ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Plechanovová, Běla (referee)
The EU-Turkey relations have been complicated for over fifty years, namely since the Ankara Agreement. The civil war in Syria broke out in 2011 and since then Turkey has been struggling with the rise of migrants. The migration crisis affected the EU in 2015. Therefore, the cooperation between the EU and Turkey to solve migration crisis was necessary. This diploma thesis engages in communication and negotiation between the EU and Turkey about a common action to solve the migration crisis. Karl Deutsch's communication theory was chosen as the theoretical framework. We can namely observe the concept of feedback during the negotiations of joint Action Plan and joint statement to tackle irregular migration. First is explained the history and development of the EU-Turkey relations. The history of the EU-Turkey relations is explained since Turkey applied for association to the European Economic Community. The EU-Turkey relations are affected by bad relations between Turkey and some EU member states. Currently, the EU-Turkey relations are more complicated because of the purges and human rights abuse after the unsuccessful coup attempt in 2016. Turkey has got stronger position in negotiations of cooperation. Turkey has grasped the chances of the migration crisis to revive some policy processes - as visa...
