Normalization-era cinematography in Czech current television broadcasting

There are lots of studies about normalization cinematography, its content or historical context of its creation. But there was no research about its presence in post-communist television broadcast in the Czech Republic. This work takes a look on five biggest TV channels - ČT1, ČT2, Nova, Prima and Barrandov - in eight chosen years between 1994 and 2015. Content analysis shows, how are Czech televisions dealing with movies and series from communist era, and whether there are any long-term trends connected with this genre. Thanks to the research method, we can see how the usage of those titles has developed up to present. Study also focuses on programmes during weekends and holidays and the amount of normalization movies on these occasions. One part of this work is dealing with communist propaganda and its presence in current broadcast. As Harald Welzer's studies show, old movies are hugely affecting people's understanding of historical events. Therefore, this survey focuses on Czechoslovak movies, which are falsifying modern history such as TV series Thirty Cases of Major Zeman or comedy Bourlive vino. Apart from those cases, less propagandistic movies have also been examined. For example those showing idealized image of normalization society and values of the former regime.

Periods of Time (1930-1938, 2000-2008) and Their Comparison

The subject of this master thesis is the comparison of the way of writing about celebrities in two time periods, namely 1930-1938 and 2000-2008. Thesis are based on two first-republic social magazines, Eva and List paní a dívek, and two magazines from the turn of the century - Cosmopolitan and Rytmus života. The first part of the thesis introduces primarily a theme of the social magazines and celebrities, it also touches the tabloid and the mass media. It also deals with the characteristics of selected social magazines. At the same time, the theoretical part explains the basic knowledge from the history of the two examined periods, which allows a better understanding of context of the periods. The second part of the master thesis is focused on own empirical research, which consists of exploratory and descriptive phase of research. It is therefore the most important part of the thesis, which brings new knowledges. The exploratory phase includes a research sample and presents article entries. The descriptive phase includes an analysis of relationships between celebrities and themes, emotions and sentiment in relevant articles. Part of this section contains research questions and answers.

Image of the Present time in cartoons and articles of Czech historical newspapers

The present thesis called Image of the Present time in cartoons and articles of Czech historical newspapers deals with the image of future world as described in the Czech media after World War I. The theoretical part of the thesis contains description of the period between World War I. and World War II. and is focused on most important events in Europe and Czechoslovakia. Also there is presentation of media status in so-called "first Czechoslovak Republic". In second part of this work we will examine Vesmír magazine and Lidové Noviny newspapers in the period between years 1925 and 1930. We will run this process by combination of quantitative content analysis and qualitative content analysis. In the end of this thesis, we will try to make some evaluation based on the results of analysis.

The Czechoslovak v zahraničí: analýza českého exilového týdeníku z let 1951-1967

The main aim of this study was to analyze the exile weekly "Czechoslovak abroad" that was beeing published in London by Czechoslovak activist and publicist Josef Josten in a period of 1951 - 1967. This thesis was using the method of quantitative content analysis to describe themes portrayed in this weekly newspaper. The analysis was based on 1702 articles that derived from 128 randomly selected editions. It was expected that the topics of Czechoslovakia and the Czechoslovak exile would be prevalent in the weekly therefore following hypothesis were formed: H1: In "The Czechoslovak abroad" weekly the topics related to Czechoslovakia will dominate over topics from the international scene. H2: In "The Czechoslovak abroad" weekly the topics related to czechoslovak exile will dominate over topics from the international scene H3: In "The Czechoslovak abroad" weekly the subjects of Czechoslovakia and czechoslovak exile will be equally represented. The analysis showed that the issue of Czechoslovakia was by far the most prominent topic of the weekly "Czechoslovak abroad". Of all the articles subjected to analysis 40 % of them were related to the Czechoslovakia. The topic of Czech exile filled 25% of all articles. Strahov Affairs in the Context of Student Movement in the 60's and their Resonance in Czechoslovak Contemporary Press

The diploma thesis Strahov Affairs in the Context of Student Movements and their Resonance in Czechoslovak Contemporary Press deals with the spontaneous demonstration of students staying at the college campus of the Czech Technical University in Prague. A demonstration for return of the genuine light and warmth to their halls was held on 31th October, 1967 and became a beginning of the changes in a youth organization that the students have been striving for a long time. The Strahov Affairs are also a milestone of the Prague Spring, which took place in the first half of 1968. The aim of the thesis is to find out how the Czechoslovak press has reported on the events at Strahov, and on the related activities of the young student generation. Two newspapers, Rude pravo (Red Law) and Mlada fronta (Young Front), and two student magazines, Student (Student) and Universita Karlova (Charles University) are subjected to a qualitative content analysis. Rowdies and their image in Czech press in the 1980s

My bachelor thesis is focused on the Czech press in the 1980s and its tendencies to describe so-called rowdies and their negative impact not only on the football environment but also on society in general. My thesis will mainly focus on rowdies and the way they were portrayed by the Czech press at that time. In the first part, I am going to characterize rowdies and some related terms as well as the historical context. I am also going to present the great football tragedies of the 20th century that took place in Europe and therefore also in Czechoslovakia. In the main part of my thesis, I'm going to analyze 4 domestic newspapers or magazines and show how they informed our society about these incidents and rowdies.

Communist Propaganda in the Children Magazine Ohníček

The bachelor thesis The Communist propaganda in the children's magazine Ohníček focuses on finding propagandistic themes in Ohníček from 1950 to 1953. In the work, articles and pictures with propagandistic subtext are explored with the help of qualitative content analysis and they are included in the thematic categories. In addition to a qualitative content analysis, the work also contains a frequency analysis that represents the most frequently used topics. In the theoretical part, thanks to contemporary literature dealing with this period, the historical context and the most important events of these years are presented. Here are also presented the most important personalities of both Czechoslovak and Soviet politics. In a separate chapter there is a brief history of the magazine Ohníček. The next chapter of this thesis explains the concept of propaganda and its tools and describes the largest propagandistic campaigns taking place in the Czechoslovakia. The conclusion of the thesis is an evaluation of the found propaganda themes. The main objective is to point out how the Communist regime manipulated children's readers and how the information printed in the Ohníček magazine differs with contemporary historical literature.

The development of the form of sport news from the start of broadcasting Czechslovak television to the present

The author of diploma theses The development of the form of sports news from the beginning of the broadcasting of Czechoslovak Television to the present describes changes in sports news in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic from 1953 to 2016 focusing on its form. The aim of this work is to write down how the form of popular news which has a longer history than common news has developed based on archive shots of Czechoslovak and Czech Television. The thesis deals with sports news in Czech countries since its inception. Then, it explains the creation of the sports department in Czechoslovak television and describes changes that have taken place during its whole life, especially changes associated with the emergence of the independent Czech Republic and creation of the sports channel ČT Sport. Separately, the author also focuses on the main sports session Branky, body, vteřiny. In the second half of the thesis, the author defines several categories that cover sports news from different points of views. These categories are divided according to the historical milestones which are important for particular category.
