Czechoslovak action art and performance between 1963 and 1989: was the artistic freedom restricted by the State security?

The purpose of this diploma thesis is to analyse the works Ghetto Warschau by Max Zweig and Revolte der Heiligen by Ernst Sommer. The thematic focus of the thesis is the Warsaw ghetto uprising. The thesis aims to present a systematic analysis and subsequent comparison of both works, with emphasis on the issue of religion. It tries to find out how Judaism together with the inconsistent approach of the Jews to the Jewish faith influenced the approach of the Jews to the revolt in the studied works. The thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter presents the history and principles of the Jewish religion as well as the history of the Jewish population. The second chapter focuses on the history of the Jewish population in Polish territory, also on the period of World War II and the emergence of ghettos, including the Warsaw ghetto. The next chapter presents both authors' biographies and works, with particular emphasis on common aspects of their work and life. The fourth chapter deals with the analysis itself. The conclusion of the diploma thesis contains a summary of the analysis and answers research questions.
The Czech Philharmonic as an Object of Interest of the Totalitarian Power: The Comparison of Nazi and Stalinist Cultural Policy
Poulová, Anna ; Emler, David (advisor) ; Zelená, Alena (referee)
The Diploma Thesis The Czech Philharmonic as an Object of Interest of the Totalitarian Power: The Comparison of Nazi and Stalinist Cultural Policy deals with the cultural policy of the Nazi and Communist regimes and with their attitudes to the Czech cultural scene. It analyses the situation in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and in the post-war communist Czechoslovakia and compares their cultural policy. The most part of the Thesis is dedicated to the particular consequences of both totalitarian cultural policies, which are observed through the activity of the Czech Philharmonic. The Thesis looks for the mutual aims of the Nazi and Communist cultural policy and then the analysis of the Czech Philharmonic's activity serves to find an answer to the question to which extent and in what areas of its activity could the orchestra oppose the pressure of the totalitarian regimes to its subordination and misuse for ideological and political intentions.
Humor and Satire as instrument of reconciliation with the holocaust experience on the example of T. Borowski and E. Hilsenrath works
Šulcová, Veronika ; Zelená, Alena (advisor) ; Nieć, Grzegorz (referee)
Although the combination of humour and holocaust may seem rather startling, further analysis of humour characteristics brings to light its significant functions, which, according to the survivors, humour in the holocaust truly fulfilled. Whether it is a matter of being able to see the object of one's attention from several perspectives, from an emotional distance or being able to release accumulated frustrations, there is clear evidence of humour's appreciable role during the holocaust and in the aftermath. Within the framework of coping with the trauma caused by the holocaust experience also emerged holocaust literature dealing with the subject from a humorous perspective, which motivated a lot of debates developed about appropriateness of humour in the holocaust representation. To other controversial works from this area also belong the short stories by Tadeusz Borowski and the novel The Nazi & the Barber by Edgar Hilsenrath. This master thesis follows humour, satire and cynicism as means of coping with traumatic holocaust experience based on the example of the above mentioned works of Tadeusz Borowski and Edgar Hilsenrath, which, according to many critics, tested the limits of holocaust representation thanks to their unusual humorous approach. Thus, the aim of the thesis is to analyze these...
An author just for Germanists? To the reception of Thomas Bernhard in Czechia after 1989
Hrdá, Anežka ; Zelená, Alena (advisor) ; Röskau-Rydel, Isabel (referee)
The diploma thesis is concerned with reception of the Austrian novelist and playwright Thomas Bernhard in the Czech Republic after 1989. The piece of work mainly focuses on how the writer was presented to the Czech society. The thesis also responds to the statement of the Czech Germanist Milan Tvrdík who said, in 1995, that Thomas Bernhard still awaits discovery of his writings in the Czech Republic and, so far, is an author mostly for Germanists. Theoretical framework of the work is based on the reception theory of Constance school. The research is mainly focused on the Czech translations of the Bernhard's books which contain epilogues and editorial notes, then on the reviews of the Bernhard's plays introduced in the Czech theatres between 1989 and 2019. Considering the fact that some adaptations of Bernhard's plays in our country offered an interesting link between Czech and Slovakian acting scene, an insight of the Bernhard's reception in Slovakia is a part of the work. The analysis takes into consideration external factors, too. These factors are translators, editors, or individual publishing houses Prostor, Mladá Fronta, Divadelní ústav or Odeon, which have influenced the reception of Bernhard's work in the Czech Republic. The qualitative analysis infers a picture of the Austrian playwright...
Analysis of the two movie versions about The Third Wave movement - German battle with the past versus the true event in the USA
Šimlová, Angelika ; Zelená, Alena (advisor) ; Emler, David (referee)
This thesis presents the topic of a school experiment that simulated Nazi Germany. The main focus of the research is the analysis of two movies that were made based on the real story from 1967 in California. High school teacher Ron Jones tried to show his students the ease with which the young Germans voluntarily wanted to be part of the Hitler Jugend because they could not believe why would the Germans willingly do all the horrible things that led to the Holocaust. With the experiment of Ron Jones, they follow their leader equally blind, feel good to be part of their new Third Wave movement. This simulation is presented in two movies, Die Welle (2008) from Germany and The Wave (1981) from the USA. The aim of this thesis is to make an overview of the differences between these two versions of the story considering the relationship between the two nations with the topic. With help of theories made by Aleida Assmann about the traumatic past and the collective memory of a nation, I try to explain the different backgrounds of the movies. Furthermore, I point out the reactions to both the Die Welle and The Wave, which are influenced not only by the cultural and social environment, but also by the aesthetics of the movie, frame, music, and other technical aspects of the movie-making. The analysis of the...
