Tearing down the former Prague Jewish quarter and its response in the contemporary press
Pěnkavová, Yvona ; Sládek, Pavel (advisor) ; Boušek, Daniel (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with the topic of the Prague urban renewal with a focus on the Josefov territory - the former Jewish town of Prague. The thesis aims to examine the relationship of redevelopment plans towards the Jewish monuments (especially synagogues and the cemetery) in the former Jewish ghetto, focusing on the response in then public space. What were the reactions to the demolition of Jewish monuments compared to Christian ones? The work is reconstructing the relationship of Jewish and non-Jewish public towards the faith of the formal Jewish town, based on contemporary press, materials of the Prague City Hall, and relevant legislation. Apart from often mentioned efforts for the rescue of historical monuments (Vilém Mrštík, Zdenka Braunerová), the work pays attention to the less known figure, Jewish clerk of the Prague City Hall August Stein, and his role in enforcement and realization of the urban renewal. The role of August Stein is put in the context of the demographical shift in Prague neighborhoods and the situation of Cezch Jews in the period of national tension between Czechs and Germans. Mishna - Tosefta - Bavli. Genre characteristics of the documents of rabbinic literature of formative period
Sládek, Pavel ; Nosek, Bedřich (advisor) ; Oliverius, Jaroslav (referee) ; Sadek, Vladimír (referee)
V úvodních kapitolách představujeme tři z klíčových dokumentů formativního období: Mišnu, Toseftu a Bavli. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Odvodyová, Eliška ; Žonca, Milan (advisor) ; Sládek, Pavel (referee)
The bachelor thesis examines the perception of childhood and the role of children among Hasidei Ashkenaz, a pietistic group active during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries mainly in Mainz, Regensburg and Speyer. Analyzing the text of Sefer Hasidim, a collection of moral exhortations and exempla produced by Hasidei Ashkenaz, the thesis focuses both on the legal and the social status of children within in the community, as well as on specific childhood rituals and on the reflection of parent-child relationship. The thesis aims to extract the motifs which reflect attitudes toward children on behalf of the Hasidei Ashkenaz. These motifs can be described as a tention that emerges from taking care of a child and a pursuit of larger piety, trespassing boundaries of the community of Hasidei Ashkenaz or uncontrollable behavior of children which may be an obstruction in the right fulfillment of religious obligations.
Prague Rabbis in the Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries: On the Nature of the Prague Rabbinate
Hokrová, Kamila ; Sládek, Pavel (advisor) ; Žonca, Milan (referee)
The bachelor thesis focuses on individual rabbis acting in Prague between the years of 1870 and 1938. This period outstands as crucial for development of Jewish society mainly because of the many changes that took place, such as demographic, linguistic and political. The year 1881 was especially significant due to the closure of rabbi Aaron Kornfeldʼs yeshivah in Golčův Jeníkov which was the last traditional yeshivah in Bohemia. The rabbis who came to Prague in the following years also received their education in the traditional yeshivas, yet after their arrival they were usually confronted with modernization trends. One of the main points of the thesis is the summary of biographies of individual rabbis, which includes but is not limited to their work, religious origin as well as depiction of the movements of Judaism they represented. The thesis could be seen as an introductory point to description of rabbis from Prague Jewish community and their religious existence.
Hebrew printing in Prague 1512 - 1672
Sixtová, Olga ; Sládek, Pavel (advisor) ; Veselá, Lenka (referee) ; Žonca, Milan (referee)
The aim of the submitted dissertation is to offer a complete bibliographical list of the documented Hebrew and Yiddish production of Prague Jewish printing houses between 1512 and 1672. The list is based on an original and detailed description of the identified editions, including paratexts, types and decorative elements. The introductory synthetic study examines the published production from the viewpoint of its language, contents and genres and the identity of its intended recipients; the motivations of its publishers, as well as their possible orientation towards specific types of texts; the standards, methods and goals of editorial work; the function of rabbinical approbations, protection of publishers rights and control of the published matter by Jewish authorities, and the measure in which the printed body of texts reflects the spiritual and intellectual interests of the readers. The typological and typographical analysis of types and decorative elements serves to attribute the undated and anonymous imprints to specific printing houses and printers, whose complete production is listed and whose activities, social position or economic possibilities are also briefly characterized. An appendix sums up the findings relating to non-Jewish censorship documented in the books themselves. Thanks to...

Joachim Pollak (1798-1879): On the Role of the Rabbi in the Jewish Community of Trebitsch in 19th Century
Smolík, Tobiáš ; Sládek, Pavel (advisor) ; Boušek, Daniel (referee)
This B.A. thesis is a case study, contributing toward the understanding to the nineteenth-century rabbinate in Moravia. It is based on a unique convolute of Hebrew correspondence of R. Joachim Pollak (1798-1879) who served as rabbi of Trebitsch since 1828 till his death. The convolute, now in the archive of the Jewish Museum in Prague, consists of over four hundred letters written by Pollak himself or adressed to him. The author analyzed the Hebrew manuscript, provided its paleographical analysis and placed it in the context of the epistolographic genre. The chronological list contains the names of Pollakʼs correspondents, many of whom were identified by the author. The letters, interpreted in the light of other archival and secondary sources, provide a unique insight into the competences, duties and activities of a local Moravian rabbi. The Representation of Hebrew Script in Christian Iconography and Its Functions
Glancová, Alžběta ; Žonca, Milan (advisor) ; Sládek, Pavel (referee)
The bachelor thesis discusses examples of Hebrew and pseudo-Hebrew script incorporated into Christian art. The earliest evidence of pseudo-Hebrew script in art is dated by the 6th century. The thesis deals with the period between the 12th and 17th centuries when these inscriptions were most common. Most authors of the inscriptions had no knowledge of Hebrew and they produced skilful copies of Hebrew letters with which they were acquainted only visually. Nevertheless, they employed these inscriptions in their works in various sophisticated ways which change according to the cultural-historical context of the artwork, the order, the placement of the artwork, its author and other facts. The portrayal of Hebrew language is set within the context of medieval and early- modern understanding of Hebrew as the original holy language and it connects the phenomenon of Hebrew inscriptions in Christian Art with the Judeo-Christian polemics and the interest of Christian theologians in Hebrew. Individual chapters deal with the portrayal of the titulus crucis, the tablets of the law and the inscriptions on clothes and objects of daily or ritual use.
