Psychological and social aspects of radicalization in case of Syria's jihadist foreign fighters
Adlof, Mikoláš ; Bureš, Oldřich (advisor) ; Oberpfalzerová, Hana (referee)
The aim of this thesis was to find out what role psychological and social factors play in the motivation of jihadist foreign fighters to leave for Syria. The sub-questions examine, on the one hand, how authors of the studies focused on motivation of foreign fighters work with the theoretical background and concepts related to the psychosocial sphere, their interpretation of the key concepts and motivation of foreign fighters and, on the other hand, what psychosocial motivation to leave for Syria prevails in existing studies. In order to answer these questions, I chose several theoretical models of radicalization that work mainly with the psychological and social dimension of the problem.Subsequently, I chose several main psychosocial categories and narratives to analyse the studies, with the possibility of new categories occurring. I was particularly interested in existential motivation such as search for meaning or the identity crisis, in the case of jihadists also connected with the ideology and the influence of social groups. Based on the analysis, I found out that the theoretical basis, the specific definitions of individual key concepts and the logic of the interpretation of the respondents' words in the majority of the studies are missing or not fully described. Without the proper definition...
Peace and Security in post-Dayton Bosnia and Herzegovina
Tabaković, Dženeta ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Oberpfalzerová, Hana (referee)
Although it has been more than twenty years since the end of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the country is still on its path to recovery, which has been very slow and very painful. The unemployment rate is staggering high, the brain drain presents a serious issue, and the country's political system looks like anything but sustainable. The Dayton Agreement may have stopped the war, but it also created a complex political structure that does not encourage the cooperation among the three constituent peoples on the scale as it was envisioned. The aim of this work is to investigate to what extent the Dayton Agreement has solidified the constructed divisions and hatreds between the ethnic groups in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Furthermore, the thesis seeks to examine in which ways the Dayton Agreement facilities and legitimizes the political elites' quest for securitizing the ethnic identity of the respective groups. It will also try to explain the reasons behind the rapid rise of nationalism that led to the brutal war as some of these motives may still reflect the current situation in the post- Dayton period. It does so by providing a theoretical framework, which reflects the constructivist approach that will be reflected upon when examining the empirical data from post-conflict situation in Bosnia and...

The Role of Chosen Intergenerational Traumas in The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in The Light of The Theory of Vamık D. Volkan
Pits, Anastasia ; Oberpfalzerová, Hana (advisor) ; Karásek, Tomáš (referee)
My bachelor thesis is based on studies of Vamik D. Volkan and his analysis about psychology of conflicts. The studies are applied on chosen traumas of intractable conflict in Karabakh. The bachelor thesis suggests an investigation upon the influence of those traumas on the intensity of conflict and their exploitation for political and national mobilization. According to methodological point of view, Volkans theory of chosen trauma is presented firstly. Afterwards, an detailed analysis of conflict in Karabakh, its main political features and historical development would be shown. Firstly, an emphasis is made on those events, which represent elements of Volkan theory on chosen trauma. The investigation compares chosen traumas of Armenians and Azerbaijanis and their influence on modern policy upon the conflict in Karabakh. The goal of this project is to show that media and press makes an emphasis on Genocide as a chosen trauma of Armenians, while the traumas of Azerbaijanis are mostly ignored, however, it's impossible to deny their existence. Furthermore, chosen traumas of both countries would be compared and contrasted. To sum up, the exploitation of chosen traumas by politicians would be analyzed between the years 1988-1994 to show their role for mobilization.
Wahhabism on the Balkans : the case study of Bosnia and Hercegovina
Janková, Vladimíra ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Oberpfalzerová, Hana (referee)
This thesis deals with the topic of the current Wahhabi movement in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The aim of this thesis is to assess the size of the movement, its ties with militant Islamist groups, financing, relations with the majority of the Bosnian society and the extent of potential security threat posed by the Bosnian Wahhabis. Due to the prevailing view of most sources dealing with the topic through the prism of security studies, the analysis focuses apart from security segment on political and economic areas. The study set independent, intermediate and dependent variables in order to verify an assumption that the influence and the scope of Wahhabi movement in Bosnia and Herzegovina is on a wane, and despite the presence of several thousand of Wahhabis, it neither poses a significant threat to social order nor development of the country. The findings indicate that financial involvement of foreign Islamic actors in the Bosnian Wahhabi movement is limited. Political instability together with socio-economic difficulties of certain groups of the Bosnian society do no lead to the growth of the Wahhabi community, however, they belong among factors which can potentially contribute to an increase of Islamic radicalisation in the country.

Democratization in Europe between 1972 and 2002: Why it did not lead to war? Comparative case study based on fuzzy set method
Brázová, Věra - Karin ; Střítecký, Vít (advisor) ; Oberpfalzerová, Hana (referee)
The thesis focuses on European countries which underwent so-called partial democratization in the last quarter of the 20th century. It starts from the polemic with Mansfield and Snyder who claim that a (partial) democratization leads to war. The development in Europe of the last quarter of the 20th century, however, seems to contradict this notion. The aim of the thesis is, thus, to contribute to the debate of war-proneness of democratizing states by answering the following question: What caused that the democratization did not lead to war in many cases? Due to the nature of the research question as well as to the number of cases (i.e. 20) the method applied here is qualitative comparative analysis using the so-called fuzzy set method. The application of this method as such is a secondary aim of the thesis. Possible causal conditions of the absence of war which are under study here also derive mostly from the conclusions made by Mansfield and Snyder. The main focus is put on the so-called golden parachute. Among other causes are strong institutions - conceptualized here as weak and weakened executive, political integration into international community, duration of independent statehood and at least some experience with democracy - and developed economy - conceptualized through GDP, economic...
