Reception of the work of Gustav Vigeland in the context of Czech art at the turn of the 19th and 20th century.

The present Bachelor Thesis analyzes the Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland and his impact on Czech Art during the end of the 19th century and early 20th century. I draw parallelisms with Czech sculptors and, furthermore, discuss various factors that influenced the reception of this artist in our lands. One of them was the role played by the magazine Moderní Revue, in which the Polish writer Stanisław Przybyszewsky published an essay, Neznámy, that introduced Vigeland in the Czech lands. I compare such article with another essay about Edvard Munch authored as well by Przybyszewsky shortly after the first one, and go on to consider whether the formulations of both works might explain somehow the different receptions of these two Norwegian artists. Przybyszewsky had a capital significance for the introduction of Vigeland in other European countries; in particular, I outline the similarities between the case of the Czech lands and that of Poland at the turn of the century, where the impact of Vigeland was incontrovertible. Czech book designs of 1960s

The aim of this diploma thesis is to describe Czech book designs of the1960s within the field of contemporary art discourse and praxis. Book designs, for Czech designers, typographers and artists - limited by communist régime - was very common artistic platform moving between the fine and applied arts. Thus focusing on the description of institutional structures producing books in the 1960s is crucial in this thesis, however, insight into creative praxis and contemporary artistic discussion is equally important, too.

Steelworking by selected Czech and British artists from 1990 to the present

The clean shiny surfaces that steel allows can be used to create art. These are not necessarily separate sculptures, but also experimental metallurgical fire painting on steel surfaces. Bachelor thesis introduces stainless steel objects of leading British sculptors, Anthony Caro, Tony Cragg or Anish Kapoor. Even in the Czech Republic, work with this alloy is not neglected. The work focuses on large sculptures of Aleš Veselý, steel combined with glass in the creation of Marian Karel and stainless steel sculptures of Michal Gabriel. The speech then turns to metal paintings by Ladislav Vlna, which he creates by heating steel plates. I am interested in the relationship between Czech and foreign artists working with this alloy. I ask if it is possible to create quality art from this metal, which is most often used in industrial production. Václav Cigler 60's-80's

This text is focused on the work of visual artist Václav Cigler and examines his work from year 1960 to 1989. The text aim to encompass all of the Cigler's creating of assigned period and to present him as a versatile artist, who is not just the glass artist, but who also deals with drawings and designs landart projects in which he works with the topic of ecology, urbanism, light and the relationship between landscape and human. The text shows the artist's work in a deeper consequence and it's looking for common moments in the different types of Cigler's art work and places it in the context of the Czechoslovak art of assigned period.

Applied graphic work of the painter Jiří Balcar

The Bachelor thesis Applied graphic work of the painter Jiří Balcar aims to discover and summarize Balcar's applied work throughout his life. The thesis is divided into two main parts: the first deals with the layout of books and periodicals, the second one looks at the design of film posters. The chapter on designing the book outlines the problem of illustration. The main focus of this study was to find a connection between Balcar's paintings and applied art. The same way as in Balcar's graphics and paintings, he goes through applied arts from expressionist depiction of a man in the city over lettristic Decrees to abstraction. After 1965 he returns again to figuration and to a man, surrounded by artifacts, referring to the modern contemporary world. However, in addition to this broad similarity, making posters and some graphic design publications shows another dimension of his work that does not appear in the paintings and graphics. This thesis is primarily a monograph; the Czech environment and the global context had to be completely removed due to the limited scope of this work.

Contemporary Art Market in Selected Regions of the Middle East

The bachelor thesis Art Market in the Middle East creates a basic scheme for understanding the art market in the Middle East. It deals with the specifics of the region encountered in the field of art market, establishment of museums and connections between art and market development. The approach is mainly historical, following the cultural and political context and addressing the highly relevant question of authenticity. The paper consists of two main chapters. The first one deals with the development of art market in Egypt - since the end of the 19th century until today. It describes private and public art institutions in Egypt and discusses the presentation of Egyptian art abroad. The second chapter presents examples of some local peculiarities of the Middle Eastern art market and institutions which are unique in the world-wide context because of the specific interaction of global and local factors.

Zorka Ságlová

Zorka Ságlová was born in Humpolec on 14 August 1942. Between 1961 and 1966 she studied at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague in the textile studio of Antonín Kybal. From informel paintings she moved to structures created out of basic geometrical elements based on a particular textile structure - sateen weave. In 1968 she exhibited her works at the New Sensitivity, an exhibition presenting new tendencies of constructive art, and she became a part of this important phenomenon in Czech art. Her latest objects presented at this exhibition led her to the idea of the viewer as an active participant on the creation of her artworks. This resulted in four actions taking place in the open landscape and an event called Hay, straw in the prestigious Gallery of Václav Špála in 1969. For this work she was largely critisized by the communist media as well as the Czech artistic community. This all led to her isolation in the 70's and 80's. From 1976 she created a series of tapestries. During this work she discovered a rabbit/hare as her emblematic symbol for a long period. Post-synthesis synthesis: Czech kinetic art of the 60's and the following creative techniques of its protagonists

The study analyses situation on Czech, formerly Czechoslovak, art scene during 70's and 80's of the twentieth century in context of the progress of kinetism. It addresses the question whether and how the kinetism as a synthesis of visual arts, architecture, theater, film and music but also science and technology has been promoted after the demise of the group of the same name. The study is divided into the three basic parts. After introducing the problem by attempt to delimit the kinetism on conceptual and temporal basis the first part follows the initial, rather sporadic, attempts of capturing the motion in the visual arts in a period of the first half of twentieth century. The substantial focus of this part is on the work of Zdenek Pesanek. The second part provides a brief insight by comparison and references into the aggradizement period of international kinetism that occurred in the 50s and through to 70s. In parallel with movement in the West it follows two particular groupments of kinetists in the Eastern block - the Muscovite group called Dvizhenie and the Prague's group Synthesis. Frank Stella/Milan Grygar - the space inside and outside of the picture

The thesis "Frank Stella/Milan Grygar - The Space Inside and Outside of the Picture" is an comparative paper concerning different artistic phases in the work of Frank Stella and Milan Grygar. The thesis focuses on the analysis of the pictorial space. The opening chapter introduces a brief description of the early work of both artists. Then pictures from the series with the same title Black paintings (Černé obrazy) are confronted. The comparison stresses out the differences between pictorial space in Stella's Black paintings and the one in Grygar's Černé obrazy. On the contrary, the following chapter points out the similarities in the spatial solution of the paintings from the series Exotic Birds by Frank Stella and Hmatové kresby (Tactile Drawing) by Milan Grygar.
