Social aspects and the legalization of prostitution
JEDLIČKOVÁ, Veronika
The issue of prostitution is still as relevant nowadays as it was in ancient times, when this activity had first been documented. Prostitution has been perceived in various ways in different times and countries. At present, prostitution is legalised in some countries, but with many illegal and criminal activities associated to it (e.g. drug problems, illegal restraint, blackmailing). In the Czech Republic there are no legal regulations regarding this activity, therefor we're referring to a legal vacuum and prostitution is resolved primarily under the terms of social work. This bachelor thesis is divided in eight chapters. The first chapter introduces the term prostitution itself, its definition, historical development and different approaches to prostitution from ancient times to present days. It also mentions the causes and consequences of prostitution and characterizes persons, who are committing violence against sex workers, but also persons, who are providing protection to girls and women working as prostitutes. The second chapter deals with classification of prostitution according to who is carrying it out and in which environment. The third chapter focuses on possible health consequences, which prostitution can cause. It introduces individual sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhoea, hepatitis B and C or HIV, but also the health policy options under the terms of prostitution. Chapter four exposes possible criminal consequences of prostitution while mentioning criminal aspects of this activity and prostitution-related offences such as pimping, human trafficking or spreading of drug addiction. Chapter five introduces the principles of social work, hence the rules and goals of a social worker providing help to women in prostitution. Chapters six and seven deal with the legal aspects of prostitution, current legal status in the Czech Republic and abroad along with the suggested and rejected forms of the prostitution regulation act. The final chapter summarizes findings drawn from professional literature, which were introduced in this bachelor thesis.
