Life in St. George's Abbey in Prague in the Middle Ages
Pacovský, Karel ; Doležalová, Lucie (advisor) ; Charvátová, Kateřina (referee) ; Eben, David (referee)
This dissertation focuses on the community of Benedictine nuns at St. George's Church in Prague Castle from its foundation around 970 to the 16th century. It is based on a detailed study of primary sources (especially surviving monastic charters, manuscripts, but also records of church administration and other extra-monastic references) and takes into account the results and approaches of contemporary monastic research. Thus, the doctoral thesis revises existing knowledge and traditional clichés, opens new questions and seeks answers to old ones (e. g. concerning convent's Benedictine observance, Latin literacy of the nuns, the enclosure, and authority over the abbey). It is the first scholarly work to examine in detail the number and origins of the nuns, their education, kinship ties, contacts, and the spatial framework that determined their everyday life. It also traces the wider staff of their church and analyses in detail the major conflicts that influenced the development of the convent.
The life and work of Jaroslav Svatoň
Jiroušová, Ludmila ; Pokorný, Jiří (advisor) ; Charvátová, Kateřina (referee)
Jaroslav Svatoň worked all his life in the State Institute of Monument Care and Nature Conservation. During his career, he devoted himself to the registration of monuments, research of medieval plasters, urban heritage reservations, forecasts in the field of heritage conservation, scientific research in this field and the use of the heritage fund in the field of tourism. The aim of the thesis is to capture the personal and professional life of Jaroslav Svatoň and to provide an overview of his work in the field of heritage conservation. To fulfill this goal, I used the historical method, i.e. work with primary sources from the estate of Jaroslav Svatoň, with the records of the professional library and documentation fund of the National Heritage Institute, and with the memories of family members and collaborators of Jaroslav Svatoň. The work is divided into three parts, in the first I describe the personal and professional life of Jaroslav Svatoň. The second part contains the legal framework for the third part, in which I deal with the activities and work of Jaroslav Svatoň in the field of heritage conservation. Thanks to his skills and knowledge gained during many years of experience in the field, he was able to synthesize a huge amount of materials and create prognostic and conceptual materials...
Henry of Carinthia. Transformation of historians's perception of his rule.
Horáková, Jana ; Charvátová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Sládková, Kateřina (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with view on the figure of Henry of Carinthia, whose image was usually unflattering in the works of Czech historians. This view of Henry is based on an important source, the Zbraslav Chronicle, which, among other things, also describes the period when Henry of Carinthia governed in the Kingdom of Bohemia (1306-1310). For a long time, Zbraslav Chronicle was considered as a set of true testimonies. The author of the Zbraslav Chronicle, very influential Cistercian Petr Žitavský, acted as a direct witness to the events described, and also due to some almost diary-like entries in certain parts of the chronicle, no one doubted the relevance of his entries. In other chronicles, Czech historians adopt the perspective of the author of the Zbraslav Chronicle, as they consider it a reliable source. Thus, Henry of Carinthia entered the consciousness of the majority based on the description of Petr Žitavský, as a weak monarch without vision and the necessary skills of a successful ruler. At the beginning of the 21st century, Jakub Razim came up with a new perspective on the Zbraslav Chronicle and thereby influenced the subsequent work of other historians. The aim of this thesis is not only the analysis of the passages devoted to the figure of Henry in the Zbraslav Chronicle, but...
Optimization of the signal from pigment triplet states in photosystem I
Charvátová, Kateřina ; Pšenčík, Jakub (advisor) ; Alster, Jan (referee)
The main objective of the thesis is to improve signal-to-noise ratio for pigments' triplet states in photosystem I. The sample was purified from cyanobacterium Thermosynecho- coccus elongatus. Based on the measurements we could deduce that the sample with optimal concentration has an absorbance about 0,7. It is beneficial to remove oxygen for example by nitrogen bubbling. Anaerobic conditions help to increase the lifetime of ca- rotenoid triplet states and to protect the sample from damage. Depending on the time of measurement we choose the maximal energy of the excitation pulse, which does not cause any significant damage to the photosystem. For the measurement, which takes about two hours, we find it is optimal to use the excitation energy from 1,5 mJ to 2 mJ. The re- laxation processes in the photosystem are fast during the first 100 ns. It is, therefore, necessary to use the shortest detection time, which is in our case a gate of 2 ns. At the later delays, it is possible to increase the gate to about 10 ns and at the same time to decrease the amplification of the measurement light (gain) so the final intensity of the signal would not change. This will contribute to a significant reduction of noise for the later delays. 1
Václav Wagner - an eminent figure of Czech monument care in the 20th century
Salavová, Mirka ; Indrová, Martina (advisor) ; Charvátová, Kateřina (referee)
The present master thesis "Václav Wagner - an eminent figure of Czech monument care in the 20th century" describes the life of conservationist and pedagogue Václav Wagner, who was born 7th November 1893 and died on 21th March 1962, after years of imprisomnemt. It sicusses not only his life as a complex, but his work at the State Monuments Office, outlines and interprets Wagner's so-called synthetic method of monuments conservation, and discusses professional and personal disputes with Zdeněk Wirth and Cyril Merhout. All the above findings are based on the study of archival sources and literature. Teaching of History of Medieval Clothing of History at Vocational Secondary School
Raubicová, Veronika ; Havlůjová, Hana (advisor) ; Charvátová, Kateřina (referee)
TITLE: Teaching of History of Medieval clothing of History at Vocational secondary school AUTHOR: Veronika Raubicová DEPARTMENT: Department of History and History Didactics SUPERVISOR: PhDr. Hana Havlůjová, Ph.D. ABSTRACT: The thesis is focused on application of comprehensive knowledge of medieval clothing in education of the first-year students at humanities and art upper-secondary schools. The theoretical knowledge will be used for creating didactic programme from which the students will learn basic facts about clothing and its importance for medieval culture and society. The students should also realize how medieval cultural heritage influences the recent clothing and fashion. The programme involves different educational methods. The efficiency of the programme and its methods will be shown analysing the students' final products. In case the programme is successful, it will be offered to other schools with the same or similar curriculum. As a part of the evaluation, the teachers will be interviewed and their reviews of the programme and its use in education enclosed. Female Spiritual Heresy at the turn of 13th and 14th Century
Huleja, Jan ; Charvátová, Kateřina (advisor) ; Foltýn, Dušan (referee)
This master's thesis Female Spiritual Heresy at the turn of 13th and 14th Century, is divided i nto two parts. The first part explains how to understand the phenomenon of female spiritual h eresy; that is to say, it looks for the ideological presumptions of the phenomenon and attempts to locate its spatio- temporal place in the full context of contemporary events. The text does not aim to separate th e church's orthodox and heterodox affairs, as the author was satisfied over the course of his re search that the boundary between these two areas is contentious. The second part presents the fates of three women, whose concept of the third person of the T rinity and peculiar religious activities provoked the hierarchical Church to react i such a way, that they were burned as dangerous heresiarchs at the stakes of Milan, Paris and Carcassonne.
