Effect of caffeine on maximal strength of the complex exercises
Šťastný, Daniel ; Třebický, Vít (advisor) ; Petr, Miroslav (referee)
Title: Effect of caffeine on maximal strength of the complex exercises Objectives: The main aim of this theses is to investigate caffeine's effect on the maximum strength of the deadlift exercise. The sub-objectives of the thesis are to test whether the magnitude of the effect of caffeine differs between the upper half of the body compared to the lower half, and also whether caffeine has an effect on the production of maximal strength after insufficient rest. Methods: The randomized double-blind study consisted of 1 baseline and 2 experimental sessions . At the start of the experimental sessions, participants were given either caffeine (3 mg/kg) or placebo 60 min before testing. In a randomized order, maximal isometric strength with sufficient rest between reps was measured for the deadlift (IMT) and benchpress (IBP) exercises. Subsequently, maximal isometric strength was measured for the isometric mid-thigh (IMTP) exercise after insufficient rest. A total of 36 healthy resistance-trained men habituated to caffeine consumption participated in this study Results: RM ANOVA showed that caffeine increased performance at IMT, compared to placebo (d = 0.229 [0.61, 0.397]), but not compared to baseline. For the IBP exercise, caffeine has no effect compared to placebo, but baseline session was...
Relationship between perceptual and structural variation of human faces: cross-cultural comparison
Pavlovič, Ondřej ; Kleisner, Karel (advisor) ; Třebický, Vít (referee) ; Marcinkowska, Urszula (referee)
ONDŘEJ PAVLOVIČ RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PERCEPTUAL AND STRUCTURAL VARIATION OF HUMAN FACES: CROSS- CULTURAL COMPARISON ABSTRAKT The perception of facial features is a fundamental aspect of human culture, influencing daily interactions and relationships. This thesis explores the cross-cultural dynamics of facial perception. First, the theoretical introduction establishes the centrality of facial perception across cultures. Empirical studies included in this thesis elucidate the convergence and divergence of attractiveness standards among cultures. Additionally, this thesis explores the interplay between facial shape dimorphism, color dimorphism, and typicality across a wide variety of populations. The context of Vietnamese immigrants in the Czech Republic offers a unique lens to study the impact of the sociocultural environment on facial perception and preferences. By analyzing attractiveness assessments provided by Czech Europeans, Czech Vietnamese, and Asian Vietnamese raters for Czech and Vietnamese faces, the studies included in this thesis further elucidate the convergence and divergence of attractiveness standards across these groups. The results of these studies underscore the role of facial averageness as a universally significant trait in attractiveness judgments. Studies added to the appendix explore...
Methods of rapid weight loss used by czech combat sports athletes
Gregor, David ; Třebický, Vít (advisor) ; Kovařovic, Vojtěch (referee)
Title: Methods of rapid weight loss used by Czech combat sports athletes. Objectives: The aim of this research project was to determine the prevalence of rapid weight loss (RWL) methods and their specific forms in Czech combat sports athletes. Methods: To determine the use of the methods of rapid weight loss (RWL) we used a purpose- built online questionnaire that was distributed via social media. This research project was open to men and women over the age of 18 who were actively competing in combat sports in the Czech Republic. Although only certain data from men were used for this project. Results: We found, that 94,7 % of participants reduce their body weight before competitions. This reduction then averages 5.33 kg (SD = 3.42) of body weight. The most commonly used methods to reduce weight across combat sports athletes included reducing energy intake (59,1 %), water loading (38,1 %), restricting fluid intake (33,3 %) and more conditioning (28,6 %). The effect of weight manipulation on physical performance in combat sports
Nesvadba, Vojtěch ; Třebický, Vít (advisor) ; Omcirk, Dan (referee)
Author: Bc. Vojtěch Nesvadba Title: The Effect of Weight Manipulation on Physical Performance in Combat Sports Objectives: To assess the effect of rapid weight loss and rapid weight gain on strength and to assess the effect of rapid weight loss on health biomarkers. Methods: A total of 19 full-contact combat sports athletes participated in this study and underwent a 7-day period of intentional rapid weight loss, resulting in 5% loss of their initial body weight. Subsequently, within two hours, they regained 2.6% of their body weight. To assess the effect of this rapid weight manipulation, we employed a comprehensive battery of isometric, dynamic, and anaerobic tests to measure the strength-related abilities and body composition (before rapid weight loss, after rapid weight loss and after rapid weight gain). Furthermore, we monitored the hydration status throughout the study using diagnostic strips. The participants also completed a series of purpose-specific questionnaires. Results: In the condition after rapid weight reduction, we observed statistically significant decrease in the maximal isometric strength of the left knee flexors, maximal explosive strength of the upper and lower extremities, and a statistically significant decline in the hydration status of the participants. In the condition...
The impact of head injuries on the olfacotry function and quality of life of boxers
Olšáková, Markéta ; Třebický, Vít (advisor) ; Stich, Jaroslav (referee)
Title: The impact of head injuries on the olfactory function and quality of life of boxers Boxing is one of the most widespread amateur and professional martial arts with a long Olympic tradition. Practicing boxing has numerous positive benefits, such as increasing physical fitness, but in comparison with other sports, injuries are common in boxing, especially in the head area, which often have serious consequences and impact on many aspects of quality of life. The aim of this theoretical bachelor's thesis is therefore a literature review of current research in the area of the incidence and severity of head injuries in boxing, the relationship of head injuries with olfactory disorders and loss of smell and their overlap into the quality of everyday life. Fractures and laceration of the nose are common boxing injuries, while the most serious are brain injurie such as concussions or contusions accompanied by bleeding. Such head traumas can cause olfactory disorders or loss of smell and taste. Although these senses are not usually considered very important in the public eye, their functioning has major effect on many areas of everyday life, such as personal hygiene, diet, environmental hazard detection, mental health, or interpersonal and social relationships. Future scientific research needs to be...
Relationship between male facial morphology and assessments of fighting ability
Třebický, Vít ; Havlíček, Jan (advisor) ; Stirratt, Michael (referee) ; Blažek, Vladimír (referee)
Social interactions may sometimes collide and result in conflicts which can be solved among others by means of physical violence. However, physical confrontations entail a risk of injuries and other fitness-affecting consequences. Thus, it seems likely that cognitive and behavioural processes to assess the fighting ability may have evolved by means of natural selection. This would facilitate adaptive decisions and responses to decrease costs and increase benefits from potential confrontations. Behavioural characteristics are often assessed according to physical traits such as facial appearance. People are relatively accurate in attributions of certain characteristics from facial traits, like physical strength or propensity for aggression. However, previous research was not based on data about actual fighting ability. Therefore, we conducted a series of empirical studies testing perception of formidability, accuracy of the perception and attempted to identify facial morphological traits related to the assessments and actual fighting performance. To test these issues, we employed Mixed Martial Arts contestants and used their record of victories and defeats. The results of our first study revealed that people are indeed able to relatively accurately assess the fighting ability of others. The fighting...
Human mate preference of minority phenotypes: a case of freqency dependent sexual selection
Pokorný, Šimon ; Kleisner, Karel (advisor) ; Třebický, Vít (referee)
Rare fenotype preference, a distinct type of sexual selection, has been studied on various species of Drosophilla and other invertebrates. There are independent clues, that a similar strategy could take part in mating among humans. This study summarizes related literature and discusses a possible role of minority type preference in maintaining a high value of hair and eye color variability and that of other facial characteristics in european population.
