Political parties as a barrier for women entering high-level politics
Mildorfová, Jaroslava ; Havelková, Hana (advisor) ; Šprincová, Veronika (referee)
Using a theoretical framework that combines public policy and feminist theories, this thesis examines the low representation of women in parliament and in the leadership of political parties. It contends that women as a group are discriminated against in the arena of political parties, which in turn is a contributing factor to their under-representation in high-level politics. The thesis consists of two main analytical elements. The first examines the rhetoric used by the five main political parties in the Czech Republic as regards their policies on the equal representation of women and men. It contrasts this rhetoric with the reality as demonstrated by the latest statistics on women's representation on candidate lists (Parliamentary Elections 2010) and in the leadership of political parties. The second analytical element consists of a case study of the Czech Social Democratic Party (CSSD). It analyses the conditions (feminist activism, internal party dynamics, permeability of party leadership) that the CSSD should meet in order to become an example of good practice as regards parity of representation. An analysis of where the party currently stands in relation to these objectives supports the conclusion that there is a discrepancy between rhetoric and practice. This discrepancy, in addition to the...
Analysis of Selected Academic Works on Veiling in Islam
Bouchalová, Alena ; Knotková - Čapková, Blanka (advisor) ; Šprincová, Veronika (referee)
In recent years in Europe, the veiling of the muslim women has become a political issue. Various laws were passed in order to regulate the appearance of the islamic veil in public. Such policies caused several protests and led to many debates over the meaning of the veil. In this thesis I focus on academic contributions to these debates. My aim is to find out what veiling stands for in the academic literature that deals with the situation in Europe (including Turkey). Both books and articles concerned with islamic veil are examined by means of the qualitative content analysis. Building on the principles of the feminist research, I also evaluate the methodologies of selected works. Another pursued aspect of the analysed texts is the use of the concept of gender.

Compatibility of opinions on parenting in couples
Hurychová, Alice ; Pavlík, Petr (advisor) ; Šprincová, Veronika (referee)
The aim of this study is to compare views on parenting of partners (from a gender perspective) in families caring for children. Changes in women's position in society, their increasing financial contribution to the family budget and therefore economic background influence the opinions about the overall organization of family life, which is reflected in the actual division of parental roles and associated responsibilities. Although the paper focuses primarily on the opinions and ideas about parenting, I did not fail to devote some space also their subsequent practice. Close interaction of people who share a household and raising children, can result in blindness, which in turn creates the feeling of certain conformity of opinion. Parents can sometimes mistakenly believe that their views on parenthood are shared by their partners. In the research I have included ten couples raising two or more children. For the chosen method of semi-structured interviews, I selected respondents from my circle of acquaintances. The choice was quite deliberate, as with many of them I knew for a long time. Therefore I have had an opportunity to watch some of their educational practices or behaviors, and wondered whether their views correspond to their actions. An important aspect when examining the similarities or...

This dissertation is a case study of Česká spořitelna, a. s. It shows the significance of gender audit by asserting equal opportunities for women and men. The theoretical part introduces how gender equality could be asserted and also summarizes how the concept has (not) been practically fulfilled (particularly in the area of labour market). The empirical part of this dissertation is investigating the significance of gender audit for asserting the equal opportunities in Česká spořitelna, a. s. Therefore it analyzes a final report of the first gender audit and compares its design with another final report that came out of the second implemented gender audit. It also analyzes the processes the company adopted after the first gender audit to promote the equal opportunities for women and men. The impacts and the efficiency of the measures (either proposed or implemented) are analyzed critically with regard to their influence on the gender equality.

It is divided into two sections. First, it discusses the theoretical basis of the research, introducing the problematics, identifying main gender-focused themes and embedding them within the EU agenda while defining aspects of their practical implementation through mechanisms of the structural politics of the EU. Further, the research paper concentrates on describing the means through which gender-related topics have been treated on the national level, how they are being defined and how the EU setting is being translated into the national context through the offered funding opportunities. The empirical part analyses information data provided by participating NGOs and consists of interviews...
