Application for YES/NO Communication for People with Mental Handicap

This bachelor thesis is based on a research in field of computer therapy. This therapy is the answer to the unsatisfactory situation in the use of information and communication technologies in the education of persons with a mental handicap. The application of YES/NO communication for people with mental handicap, which is the subject of this work, is developed in accordance with the requirements of computer therapy. The problem of mental retardation will be described at the beginning of this work. Subsequently, the analysis of the possibilities of using mobile devices for the education of persons with special educational needs and analysis already exist applications will be performed. The following section describes the design and implementation of the application. At the end, the outputs will be verified through a case study in the environment, where people with a mental handicap lives.

Ski course of children with mental disabilities

Title: Ski course of children with mental disabilities Aim of thesis: To develop a set of individual preparatory exercises for training of downhill and cornering techniques in alpine skiing for children with mental retardation. The sub-objective was to test the mastery of individual elements of skiing skills and skiing technique in several children with mental retardation who had completed a ski course Method: This is a theoretical-empirical research. A set of preparatory exercises was tested on a cohort of four children with a diagnosis according to ICD-10in the range F70- 79. Mastery of the skills was assessed using a Likert scale (1-5). Children were observed performing specified, pre-explained and demonstrated skiing skills a total of three times (at the beginning, middle and end of the ski course). Results: A set of preparatory exercises was compiled and tested on a six-day ski course. It showed that children with intellectual disabilities ranging from mild to moderate mental retardation are able to learn and, with prior experience, improve their skiing skills. The child with severe mental retardation did not acquire the skills as he was unable to accept the ski equipment and therefore did not participate in the lessons. Title: Ski course of children with mental disabilities Aim of thesis: To create a set of individual preparatory exercises for training downhill and turning techniques in alpine skiing for children with MR. The sub-goal is to describe in individually observed children at the beginning, in the middle and at the of end the mastery of individual elements of skiing skills and riding technique during weekly training with the inclusion of optimized APA exercises for alpine disciplines. Method: The method I use in my thesis is observation - an empirical procedure. The cohort consisted of four children with a diagnosis according to ICD-10 in the range of F70 - 79, who were observed three times in total (at the beginning, in the middle and at the end) during the skiing course. Children were observed performing assigned, pre-explained and demonstrated basic and open skiing skills. Results: The methodology was compiled. It has been shown that children with mental disabilities in the range of mild and moderate mental retardation are able to learn and, in the case of previous experience, to improve their skiing skills. Artistic expression in children with mental disabilities in preschool age

The bachelor's thesis is focused on the artistic expression of children of preschool age with mental disabilities. The aim of the bachelor's thesis is to observe children during the course of less than a year while drawing, to record their behavior during drawing and then to evaluate their artistic expression. The thesis is divided into two parts - theoretical and practical. The theoretical part is divided into four chapters. The first chapter deals with drawing, what it is important for children, what function it has for children and what is the importance of colors in drawing. Furthermore, how the drawing develops and which grip of the drawing utensil is correct for the child. The second chapter describes the characteristics of a child in preschool age. It focuses mainly on fine and gross motor skills, laterality, thinking and emotional development of children. The third chapter presents the issue of mental retardation, namely its classification, etiology and education of children with mental retardation in preschool age. The fourth chapter is devoted to the drawing of children with mental retardation. In the practical part, individual drawings of graphic types - figure, house and tree - are presented and qualitatively evaluated.

The Issue of Social Services for Families with Children with Down Syndrome

The topic of the bachelor thesis is the issue of social services for families with children with Down syndrome as a target group for social services. The theoretical part defines the concepts related to Down syndrome and associated mental retardation, concepts related to social services, education and its interconnection with the social services system in the Czech Republic. The theoretical part of the thesis includes a list of social services and their providers that families with children can theoretically use together with other helping organisations. This part of the bachelor thesis fulfils two objectives: to map social services for families with children with Down syndrome and to map the providers of these services. The third objective of the thesis, to find out the experiences of families with social services, is fulfilled by the practical part of the bachelor thesis, which was carried out in the form of qualitative research using the method of semi-structured interviews with families with a child with Down syndrome. To achieve the results, three research questions were set: What organisations in the Czech Republic provide social services to families with a child with Down syndrome? What social services do these families actually use? Are these social services perceived by families as sufficient? The results of the survey show that families with children with Down syndrome are aware of social services and their providers and some of them use them or know that they will in the future. It is also evident that if they combine the use of social services with the services of helping organisations that focus specifically on children with Down syndrome, their service needs are currently met and the services are perceived as sufficient thanks to the complementary helping organisations.

Qualification of an assistant of a pedagogue and their role at educating Roma pupils.

The thesis deals with educational assistant requirements, which are necessary for the performance of this profession. The theoretical part presents basic concepts associated with the researched issues. Initially, it characterizes upbringing and education. Subsequently, it presents the most common disorders that occur in Roma children, such as mental retardation or ADHD. An important chapter is the Roma pupil. This part presents the history of Roma education, their specific attitudes to gain knowledge and also the Roma language itself. There is also a chapter about educational assistants. The practical part is based on interviews with educational assistants and case studies of Roma pupils, which closely specify the need of the assistant and his activities in the educational process. From evaluating the interviews, it is clear that apart from the qualification requirements, personality prerequisites also play an important role.

A family caring for an adult child with a mental disability

This bachelor thesis is focused on the problematics of families who raised and are caring for an adult child with a mental disability. This work aims to lay out how parents look at the situations in their family, in what aspect their lives are either limited or enriched, whether they perceive any changes in the methods of care for their offspring and how they reflect at them. The work also focuses on the resources from which the parents draw strength to overcome the difficulties tied to raising of their offspring, and the support they receive. The theoretical part describes the categorization of people with a mental disability and how the mental disability of a child influences the situation of the family. Furthermore, it establishes the meaning of core terms used throughout the work. Qualitative research has been conducted, and it consists of forms of half-structured dialogues with six parents (out of four families) who are taking care of an adult person with a mental disability. Many changes and limitations have been found in families due to the presence of a child with a disability. Parents perceive several negatives associated with caring for a disabled child, which directly result from the nature of the disability, as well as some benefits. The presence of a mentally handicapped child was not found to affect the parents' partnership. Furthermore, it was found that an important factor for coping with difficult situations resulting from care is the support of various types that parents receive and that parents cope with difficult situations in specific ways. Research shows that parents are very worried about their child's future.

The family acceptance of a child with mental handicap

The bachelors work is divided into two parts. Theoretical nad practical. The theoretical describes the developmental stages that occur towards the mentally disabled in a family context. There is a description of the mental retardation and the gradual stages of acceptance. By means of the practical part and via analysis of social psychological processes we will be able to formally recognize the evolution of specific stages of family acceptance and their subsequent influence on the child.

Dignity of a person with a mental disability

The thesis deals with the reflection of evaluation of human dignity at work with people with mental disabilities in the facility of the STROOM DUB o. p. s. center by social workers and workers at social services. The first part of the thesis deals with the general explanation of the term human dignity, then dignity of people with mental disabilities and the significance of human dignity in Christianity. Furthermore, the thesis describes a brief overview of history and introduces the social work with people with mental disabilities. The second part of the thesis is focused on the STROOM DUB o. p. s. center, its creation and description, further on the objectives, interests and work of the center. It briefly introduces clients which reside in the center all year round or outpatient and their work and the individual therapeutic workshops. The last part of the thesis deals with the research in facilities itself, objective of which is to find out how the workers of the center - social workers and workers at social services approach clients with mental disabilities, if they respect/do not respect dignity of people with mental disabilities and how the perceive this interaction.

Hospitalization of Down syndrome children

Down syndrome is the most frequent genetic disorder that is present in average among one out of 700 children born alive. Every child born with Down syndrome bears in his/her cells abnormal amount of chromosome 21. The child born with Down syndrome requires different care and approach then other children because of a presence of various stages of mental retardation and affiliated diseases. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to introduce the issue of Down syndrome to the public. Furthermore, to map out parents´ satisfaction with nursing care in the hospital in which their child with Down syndrome is hospitalised and to survey the differences in nursing care of children with Down syndrome in the framework of hospitalisation at children´s department from the nurses´ point of view. This aim is reached through a qualitative research which was implemented as a half-structured interview with parents whose children have Down syndrome, and with nurses from different children´s departments. The first part of the thesis describes Down syndrome in theory. Its forms, history, characteristic traits, affiliated diseases, diagnostics and specific care in various fields are described. The practical part processes and analyses used interviews with both mentioned groups; for an analysis of the research data a method of open coding is used. The implemented interviews with parents imply a real satisfaction with hospitalisation of their children, however a dissatisfaction with the way of giving information about their child´s diagnosis of Dawn syndrome. Out of 9 mothers, 5 of them were not satisfied with the way of providing this information and they mostly complained about their husbands´ absence. Thanks to interviews with nurses, some differences in care of these children were discovered. It mostly deals with a different approach, better surveillance due to a mental retardation and more explanation and assurance whether the child understood. Even the higher rate of aggressivity of these children was discovered. Therefore, emphatic and sensitive approach is important. The conclusion of the research states higher difficulty of nursing care and satisfaction of parents with their child´s hospitalisation; there are some exceptions and there is much room for improvement on both sides. Particularly it is necessary to improve doctors´ approach to providing the parents with information about diagnosing their child with Down syndrome.
