Low-carb diets in patients with celiac disease

The diploma thesis deals with the autoimmune disease celiac disease (celiac sprue), as well as proper nutrition, popular low-carbohydrate diets, and their suitability for patients with celiac disease. The theoretical part describes the disease, symptoms, complications and diagnosis. It also deals with nutrition, macronutrients and micronutrients, gluten-free diet and several of the most famous low-carb diets. The practical part deals with an online questionnaire, sent to celiac groups, and an investigation into the experiences of celiac patients with low-carbohydrate diets. The obtained information is processed into graphs, commented and summarized in the discussion. The aim of the work was to find out what experiences of patients with celiac disease, who are treated with a gluten-free diet, have with low-carbohydrate diets, whether they were satisfied and noticed a benefit, or whether, on the contrary, there was a worsening of the condition and a greater restriction in eating. Low carbohydrate diet in type 2 diabetes mellitus therapy

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) is a highly prevalent metabolic disorder, which substantially affects quality of patients' lives and simultaneously increases the risk of early death due to development of its specific complications. Current T2D therapy comprises mainly pharmacotherapy, however, lifestyle changes, particularly modification of dietary habits, also assume an important role in the process. While conventional dietotherapy of T2D primarily concerns reduction of dietary fat intake aiming to achieve caloric restriction, the low carbohydrate diet (LCD), recently often discussed in relation to T2D therapy, is based on the reduction of dietary carbohydrates, whereas fats and/or proteins are increased. The positive effects of LCD in T2D therapy and its comorbidities are summarized in the theoretical part of this thesis. The aim of the practical part of the bachelor thesis was to asses the effect of LCD on health parameters associated with T2D as well as the subjective sense of respondents' satisfaction with this diet together with their adherence and compliance. The results of the survey showed that LCD led to weight loss, decreased waist circumference, glycaemia and levels of glycated haemoglobin and led, in a number of cases, to medication reduction. Low-carbohydrate diet in prevention and treatment of chronic diseases

A low-carbohydrate diet, which is characterised by carbohydrate intake reduction below usually recommended level, has recently been gaining in popularity, as it has also been a topic of a number of scientific studies. In the theoretical part of this bachelor's thesis there are some of its types introduced and possible benefits and risks are summed up. Consequently, its correlation with selected chronical diseases is discussed - starting with the use of low-carbohydrate diet as a part of treatment of intractable epilepsy. The next topic is low-carbohydrate diet related to diabetes mellitus, which could potentially be used to treat and also prevent chronic complications of this disease. Low-carbohydrate diet connected to weight loss, which could serve as a preventive measure, is also described. At the end of the theoretical part some of the other diseases, for which the effect of low-carbohydrate diet has already been researched too, are presented. The practical part of this bachelor's thesis focuses on the experience of people who are/were on this diet. The aim of this part is to chart circumstances of the diet initiation, its course and a plan of dealing with it in the future.
