Implementation of sustainable development goals in developing countries: a case study of Zambia
Kachelo, Mukuka
This research was aimed at examining the implementation of SDGs in developing countries and it focused specifically on Zambia. To achieve this aim, existing data on SDGs obtained from official platforms was used to make observations about how the country is performing so far and the results showed that only 7 out of the 17 SDGs, based on selected indicators, have improved during the period under review. This put into question the adequacy of the policies and mechanisms put in place by the Zambian Government to implement the SDGs. Having established that Zambia has performed poorly when it comes to SDG implementation so far and reviewed some of the challenges based on existing literature and national review documents, this paper went a step further and sought the opinions of 105 Local Government officers who are actively involved in SDG implementation at the district level through a questionnaire. The officers identified budget constraints, lack of coordination among local stakeholders, and lack of coordination between the National, Provincial and District levels of government as the top 3 challenges to SDG implementation at the Local Level.

Charles Uni- versity, Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute of Economic Studies. Thesis supervisor doc. Ing. Tomáš Cahlík, CSc. Abstract The aim of this thesis is through using the appropriate tools of econometric analysis to identify some of the variables having impact on the development, whether positively or negatively, on selected Sustainable Development Goals. They became part of the agenda in United Nations back in 2015. As the sample used for the analysis contains observations on around 170 countries in a time period from 2000 till 2016, the panel data approach for economet- ric modeling is the most suitable to rely on. There are plenty econometric studies focused on analyzing the SGDs through cross-sectional examples, however only few of them are looking at them from a global perspective. The main findings of the analysis do not include only statistically significant explanatory variables identified. Supported by a concrete example, there is an evidence that some of the goals require more focus on proper data collect- ing on their corresponding indicator. This turns some of them to be hardly measurable and the simple tools of econometric analysis...
Sustainable Development Goal Nr. 1: End of Poverty
Komorová, Anežka ; Cahlík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Fanta, Nicolas (referee)
Nowadays, the question of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) seems to get more and more attention. This bachelor thesis focuses on the first goal - end poverty in all its forms everywhere. There is a great number of literature which examines possible determinants of poverty in order to create effective strategies to fight witht it. Majority of them focuses on the study in particular countries or regions since their data are easier to access. On the contrary, this thesis examines variables and their effect on extreme poverty in the world with the use of the econometric analysis on panel data. There are seven independent variables used: GDP per capita, Gini index as a proxy variable for income inequality, population growth and four education attainment levels - no education, primary, secondary and tertiary. The World Bank was chosen as the primary source of data with a great number of observations from 125 countries over time period of 2000 and 2017. According to the results of the study, explanatory variables GDP per capita, income inequality, no education and tertiary education significantly affect extreme poverty. Also, the results show that the goal of 0 % is unlikely to be fulfilled by the year of 2030. To sum up, the first goal of the SDGs turned out as too ambitious. For its...
Sustainable Development Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy Panel Data Analysis
Křížková, Alžběta ; Cahlík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Moravcová, Michala (referee)
This thesis analyses the seventh Sustainable Development Goal: Affordable and Clean Energy. Four empirical models are built, each for one indicator. They are then evaluated using panel data analysis for all member states of the UN. The research question it seeks to answer is: "What characteristics have major impact on providing electric energy and other energy related benefits?" We found that in most of the cases, the proportion of urban population and the Human Development Index have a major impact on the indicators. Unlike any previous study dealing with similar topics, this paper analyses the whole goal with its four indicators, not just one particular energy aspect. That allows us to look for interconnection and common features between indicators and their influences.

Sustainable development in multinational companies
Genttnerová, Kateřina ; Plášková, Alena (advisor) ; Hubková, Veronika (referee)
The main objective of this thesis is an evaluation of activities in multinational companies which lead to sustainable development. Furthermore, an analysis which aims to find out if these activities contribute to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) drawn up and approved by all member states of the United Nations in 2015. The theoretical part of the thesis introduces history starting with the industrial revolution and present situation in a globalized world. It explains specifics of apparel industry and sport apparel industry. It also presents individual SDGs, their meaning and the importance of all subjects being involved in their achieving, including private companies. The thesis evaluates how the three biggest multinational companies from sports apparel industry perceive the topic of sustainable development. These are adidas AG, NIKE, Inc. and Puma SE. In the analytical part, it evaluates their current and planned practices contributing to sustainable development, it compares them with the topics of SDGs and proposes measures that would help to successfully achieve them. The analysis shows that these three companies have already been engaging in the topic of sustainability. They take the SDGs into account but do not fully implement them in their business models yet. The company which has the most activities connected to sustainable development is adidas. Most of the activities these companies have are connected to the following goals: Responsible consumption and production, Clean water and sanitation and Partnership for the goals. There are several specific areas in the sports apparel industry that could be greatly improved. They are presented at the end of the thesis.
