Gustáv Husák in a Cause of the Slovak Bourgeois Nationalism
Macháček, Michal ; Rychlík, Jan (advisor) ; Doskočil, Zdeněk (referee)
The thesis deals with the Czechoslovak communist politician Gustáv Husák in connection with the cause of the Slovak bourgeois nationalism. It is structured chronologically, sometimes interspersed with thematic areas. It draws from a wide variety of sources. The prevailing approach is positivistic and analytical. The aim is to explain the emergence of the cause of the Slovak bourgeois nationalism and the way in which Husák was incorporated into it. The work points to a pivotal link with the international context and reveals poor relations between leading Party officials. Furthermore, the thesis raises issues of Husák's political fall, fabricated charges, imprisonment and subsequently the complexity of the rehabilitation process, at the end of which Husák's Communist Party membership was restored and a further political career remained a possibility. Additionally, the text tries to consider to a large extent the social relations between different participants and understand their motives of behavior. All of this is also put into perspective with respect to Czech-Slovak relations, which were significantly influenced by the aforementioned cause. The intention of the work deliberately exceeds the biographical theme.
The Dissolution of Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia - A Comparative Case Study
Kaplan, Petr ; Ditrych, Ondřej (advisor) ; Karlas, Jan (referee)
The thesis compares two different modes of state disintegration of post-communist federations. Yugoslavia is an example of a violent breakup, Czechoslovakia stands for a peaceful way, how to split a state. Using the Level of Analysis concept the study looks for differences at five levels focusing mainly on the change caused by the process of democratic transition in both states that removed the old regime and brought a competitive atmosphere among the old and new elites representing various ethnic groups. The outcome of the analysis is that the role of the army, the length of the liberalization process and the different historical experience are factors that matter most.

Summary This work is describing the conflict between Czechoslovakia and Poland over Teschen in years (1918-1920). In 1919 was a military confrontation between Czechoslovakia and Poland, known in Czech as the Seven day war. A final line was set up at the Spa Conference in Belgium on July 28, 1920. Police Identification of Persons in Czechoslovakia between 1918 and 1938
Tůma, Lukáš ; Himl, Pavel (advisor) ; Rutar, Václav (referee)
This thesis is focused on police techniques of identification of persons used in Czechoslovakia between 1918 and 1938. The goal of this thesis was to show, how the police identification of persons should look like, in other words which techniques were used by criminologists, how they described them, which accomplishments and negatives they saw in them, who had to be identified and for which purpose. To answer all these questions I deal with political and administrative context of Czechoslovakia, police structure in Czechoslovakia between 1918 and 1938 and development of criminology, "bertillonage" and documents of identification (especially passports) in the first part of the text, where I mainly use secondary literature. Then I focus on analysis of three main techniques of identification used between 1918 and 1938, namely dactyloscopy, graphology and photography. In this part of the thesis, I use criminology manuals, published in the twenties and thirties. Finally, I work with the fourth technique of identification of persons, namely the description of persons, where I mainly use forms, which are in the criminology manuals. Thus, heart of this work is based on normative documents from the twenties and thirties wrote by criminalists or graphologists. Keywords Police, criminology, identification,...
"I was eighteen and got married out of real love." Evolution of wedding ceremony in Communist Czechoslovakia
Hodačová Balvínová, Lenka ; Cassi Pelikán, Hana (advisor) ; Houda, Přemysl (referee)
The aim of this master's thesis is the study of the development and changes of the wedding customs in the years 1948 - 1989, i.e. during the period of communistic Czechoslovakia. These developments and changes were monitored by oral history quality research - by the direct interviews with participants in discussions and comparison with available sources and photographic documentation from the weddings in each period of time. The work is focused more detailed on the influence of the socialism and its economic and cultural conditions over the development of wedding practices and customs and then on deviations from the Western, or better to say non-communistic model of changes in wedding customs in Europe during the post-war period of the 20th Century. The research was pursued at the regional level. The narrators were selected with regard to their responsibility for the appropriate generation and to the time they have married.

The present doctoral thesis investigates book translations of Czech and Slovak literature into European Portuguese in 20th -century Portugal. The Introduction gives reasons for choosing the topic, argues for its relevance and outlines the structure of the thesis. It defines the main research question, 'What was the presence of Czech literature translated into European Portuguese in 20th -century Portugal?', and formulates the hypothesis to be tested: 'The translations of Czech literature in 20th century Portugal exhibited a tendency, a pattern.' Chapter 1 attempts to operationalise seven theoretical issues pertinent to Translation Studies in general: (1) ideology, (2) censorship, (3) indirect translations, (4) non- translation, (5) canon and world literature, (6) paratexts, and (7) medium-sized lingua- & socio-cultures. Chapter 2 delineates the research subject, discusses the most important types of sources and materials used and presents the methodology. The principal research subject is defined as translations of Czech fiction into European Portuguese published in book form in Portugal in the 20th century. Seminal works by J. Levý and A.
