Hamburg notation system

The bachelor's thesis is focused on the description of the Hamburg notation system - to the theoretical part, but also practical use for czech sign language. Hamburg notation system is a system, which can be used for all known sign languages. It was created because of absence the written form of sign languages. The thesis presents the last version of Hamburg notation system, but also presents all previous versions of Hamburg notation system since it's creations in 1984.
Frequency analysis of handshapes in selected Czech sign language dictionaries

in English This work focuses primarily on the handshapes and their frequency in the selected Czech sign language dictionaries. The main aim was to analyze the occurence of handshapes in two types of Czech sign language dictionaries (general and terminology) and compare them. A secondary aim was to analyze the handshapes of active and passive hand in these dictionaries and to analyze types of signs. The last aim was to get information about handshapes in foreign sign languages and compare their most frequent handshapes with my analysis results.
Deixis and space in Czech sign language

This work presents fundamental extra-and intra- language features of deixis (referring to an entity out of the language and to an entity forward or backward in the text) in Czech sign language as well as in Czech language. The work also includes examples from other signed and spoken languages that are taken from relevant bibliography. In particular, more space is devoted to categories of contextual information referred to by deixis such as person, place, and time. Possible ways of how to distinguish deictic expressions from ostensive expressions in signed languages are introduced. In connection with different types of grammatical space in sign languages, route and survey perspectives are mentioned. In the practical part of the work there are described methods and results of the research on the choice of perspective by Czech sign language and Czech language users with regard to a different type of the described enviroment. The findings were, consequently, compared with the results from American sign language and English language. The second research focuses on strategies used by Czech sign language and Czech language users when describing the objects placed in shared space. Survey of word-order tendencies in Czech Sign Language

This thesis focuses on the description of the three basic aspects of the word order in the Czech Sign Language in the contrast with the spoken Czech Language. On the basis of the empiric research the prototypical word order is described for the declarative sentences, topicalization and the order of the signs in the nominal phrase in the Czech Sign Language. The research consists of the video material recording 15 native speakers of the Czech Sign Language of various age. The results are compared with the situation in the three other sign languages - the American, British and Australian Sign Language. The part of this piece of work is a DVD containing particular excerpted examples of utterances, which the deaf signers have used in the research.
Factors influencing interpreter's performance in educational facility

The thesis deals mainly with all the aspects having an impact on the interpreter's setting at primary and secondary schools and colleges. Whether special schools or mainstream schools with deaf students integrated. In the theoretical part, we can learn about characteristics of educational interpreting, development of this type of interpreting in the Czech Republic and the situation in interpreting in 1991 and since that year until now. Most of the work deals with the individual factors that influence the quality of simultaneous interpretation in general way. From these factors, I chose those that were specific to sign language interpreting in the area of education. To have an idea of what the current situation in the education of interpreters is, I interviewed 5 interpreters - one of each secondary school or college. In the practical part we will find a questionnaire survey of 19 Czech sign language interpreters working in the field of education. This survey aims to determine whether the factors have anticipated impact on interpreters in education during the interpretation process, and if so, to what extent. Specifics of Translating Biblical Texts into Czech Sign Language

The bachelor thesis is concerned with the principles of translation of biblical texts into Czech Sign Language. The theoretical part of the thesis discusses Bible translation in general, and more specifically, in relation to sign language translation. It summarises existing findings from studies on foreign translations of biblical texts into sign languages, such as American Sign Language, Japanese Sign Language, Sign Language Lesco. The practical part provides an analysis of the Dictionary of Signs for Christian Concepts for Deaf People and two video translations of passages from New Testament into Czech Sign Language, making recommendations for updates to the Dictionary based on these findings. The thesis then brings together the theoretical knowledge and the present findings and proposes a set of principles and mandatory guidelines for translation of biblical texts into Czech Sign Language. Grammatical Category of Time in Czech Language Textbooks for Deaf Pupils and for Foreigners

The thesis focuses on the way the grammatical category of time is presented in chosen textbooks of the Czech language for deaf and for foreigners. A small questionnaire survey, establishing which textbooks the teachers actually use in teaching Czech for deaf, whether they work also with textbooks for foreigners and what other materials they possibly use, is included. All the textbooks mentioned in the questionnaires are later analysed from the view of their presentation of the grammatical category of time, separately those for deaf and those for foreigners. In the second ones, inspiration for teaching deaf is being traced. At the end of the work there is an author's draft chapter of a textbook for deaf dealing with a part of the issue of verbs and times. The draft text contains an explanation and few exercises and concentrates on problematic phenomena.
Learning Czech language in the 1 - 3 grade of elementary schools for hearing impaired - description of current situation and potentiality of innovation

This thesis is focused on problems of teaching in school subject Czech Language in 1 - 3 grade of elementary schools for hearing impaired. The whole issue is put into the theoretical framework, which delimit specify of hearing impaired pupils education and the goals which this pupils should achieve in elementary education and primarily in language education too. Special attention is paid to problems of teaching reading and writing - ways to acquiring reading literacy in hearing impaired pupils. Presented are methods of teaching reading and writing and I am thinking about their applicability in hearing impaired pupils education. Is given an idea of teaching in school subject Czech Language in Elementary schools for hearing impaired in history (1948 - 1990), in detail I analyze teaching materials used in that time. Current situation of teaching in school subject Czech Language is describe on the grounds of research probe realized in school year 2011/2012 on four selected elementary schools for hearing impaired in the Czech Republic. Teaching English to Deaf Students

This bachelor thesis focuses on the process of teaching the English language to students who are deaf. The objective of the theoretical part is to present possible differences in the process of teaching a foreign language that result from the different identity of deaf students and to illustrate the situation of teaching a foreign language to deaf students. The practical part aims to present various methods that may assist during the process of teaching. It also describes the observed lessons of English at schools for the hearing impaired.
Oral components in the Czech sign language

The present bachelor's thesis analyzes oral components (also referred to as mouth gestures) in the Czech sign language. These are defined as all movements of mouth used in Czech sign language that do not have source in Czech spoken language. At the beginning of this thesis, the author puts his attention on definitions of oral components in comparison with other means of Czech sign language, which with they share the same place of articulation - especially in regards to so-called mouthings. In next chapters, the author concentrates on formal and semantic characteristics of observed means, their differentiation and processes, which can have effect on their forming. That is followed by discussion about the role and status of language oral components in Czech sign language, proposal for record of these means and their selective overview. The purpose of this thesis is to make first insight into the issues of oral components in Czech sign language, supported by foreign and Czech professional literature and provide basis for future research.
