Sound properties of moderators' speeches in selected TV talk shows
Baptistová, Lucie ; Vlčková, Jana (advisor) ; Sojka, Pavel (referee)
The thesis investigates speech sound characteristics of three different television talk show hosts. Using the experimental analysis it tries to inspect all their typical attributes, especially the suprasegmental features of their speeches. The selected television hosts are both from public and commercial television stations. The first part of the theoretical section introduces the talk show television programming genre and specifies its broadcasting share among the observed television channels, next the diversity of Czech talk shows is introduced together with the individual hosts whose utterances will be analyzed, also the role of communication in mass media as well as the host journalist figure is presented, and the features of publicly spoken speeches are described. Within the part devoted to languages and speeches the linguistic discipline of phonetics is introduced followed by the individual continuous speech sound properties and their specific attributes. The practical section researches performance of the particular hosts and it specifically tries to deal with their sound aspects in order to evaluate whether some typical attributes can be found (primarily within the areas of intonation, pauzation and tempo). Further it observes whether some same sound attributes are shared among the talk...
The Issue of Rhythmic Groups in Spoken French
Kurková, Daniela ; Nováková, Sylva (advisor) ; Bořek - Dohalská, Marie (referee)
The study is concerned with the division of the French speech into rhythmic groups. The first part attempts to outline the theoretical background of the issue. The thesis is concerned with terms such as rhythmic groups, the French accent and the comparison between the French and the Czech phonetic system. The aim of the practical part of this paper is to find out to what extent Czech students of French at the Faculty of Education are able to use the phenomenon spontaneously in their speech with regard to the complete difference between the phonological rules of both languages. For reaching the aim of the paper several methodological procedures are employed. The first part which is concerned with theory books of both languages allows forming the hypothesis. Subsequently, the hypothesis is verified in quality-based research which examines the production of speech by Czech students. To analyze correctly the tested speech produced by Czech students, a comparison with speech recorded by French native speakers is used. The division into rhythmic groups and the correct use of accent are analyzed and evaluated in the final part. KEYWORDS Phonetics, Phonology, Rhythmic Groups, Accent, French
Data-driven Pronunciation Generation for ASR
Obedkova, Maria ; Plátek, Ondřej (advisor) ; Peterek, Nino (referee)
Data-Driven Pronunciation Generation for ASR Maria Obedkova In ASR systems, dictionaries are usually used to describe pronunciations of words in a language. These dictionaries are typically hand-crafted by linguists. One of the most significant drawbacks of dictionaries created this way is that linguistically motivated pronunciations are not necessarily the optimal ones for ASR. The goal of this research was to explore approaches of data-driven pro- nunciation generation for ASR. We investigated several approaches of lexicon generation and implemented the completely new data-driven solution based on the pronunciation clustering. We proposed an approach for feature extraction and researched different unsupervised methods for pronunciation clustering. We evaluated the proposed approach and compared it with the current hand-crafted dictionary. The proposed data-driven approach could beat the established base- lines but underperformed in comparison to the hand-crafted dictionary which could be due to unsatisfactory features extracted from data or insufficient fine tuning. 1
Agreements and Disagreements between Automatic and Human Speaker Recognition

Pronunciation characteristics of Spanish of Czech students
HRUŠKOVÁ, Veronika
The aim of the thesis is an analysis of typical phonetics errors that are made by Czech native speakers when speaking Spanish language. After introducing the Spanish and Czech phonetics systems, the focus is on three most frequent errors of Czech speakers when speaking Spanish: the incorrect pronunciation of two types of Spanish vibrant consonant [], [r], the incorrect pronunciation of dental occlusive [d] and its phonetics variant [] and the analysis of pronunciation stops in Spanish. As a method of the analysis was chosen a technique of oral dialogue with six students of Hispanic philology at the University of South Bohemia at the Faculty of Art. There were recorded two groups of students: the group of students who has spent more than five months in Spain and another group of students who has never been in Spain. Since the Czech phonetics system is different from the Spanish one, it is assumed that there will be an interference in the field of Spanish phonetics from Czech language.

Široká, Pavlína ; Klinka, Tomáš (advisor) ; Bořek - Dohalská, Marie (referee)
The diploma thesis entitled Phonetics in the teaching of FLE according to the action- oriented approach deals with the concept of phonetics in teaching French as a foreign language according to the new action-oriented approach. The thesis is focused on the diachronic development of teaching methods in the teaching of French as a foreign language (FLE). Further, the thesis focuses on the theoretical definition of basic phonetic terms, which we work in the practical part of the thesis with. The terms are briefly characterized from the theoretical point of view, from the point of view of the didactic, and subsequently the work defines the contents that should be included in the FLE teaching on level A1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. There are defined phonetic exercises and recommended practices in the teaching of phonetics of FLE. The following part is devoted to the diachronic development in the field of FLE phonetics evaluation, the definition of criteria for evaluation and the determination of the main types of evaluation. The practical part analyses the concept of phonetics in modern textbooks of FLE, which are conceived according to the action-oriented approach. Based on the theoretical knowledge in the theoretical part of the thesis, the criteria for...
