How are words felt in a second language?: Communication, emotion and identity in learning Spanish as a second language

Several studies focus on the emotionality differences between a first and a second language. The main objective of this study is to analyse two relevant aspects of the emotionality of words in Spanish as a L2. On the one hand, participants give their subjective valence and arousal ratings to 300 Spanish words. This project analyses the valence (negative, neutral, and positive rank) of 38 verbs that belong to the initial levels (A1-A2) of Spanish as a second language. Words were taken from the Spanish language teaching guide, Plan Curricular del Instituto Cervantes, and were presented to the participants both via oral and written input. These data are contrasted along with those that were collected from a group of native speakers, which was accessed through a database named EMO/ELE. On the other hand, the attitudes towards the Spanish language and the reactions of non-native speakers to daily situations such as frustration, anger or saying "I love you" in a L2 are collected. These data are analysed both quantitative and qualitative via a questionnaire and several interviews, respectively. The results of both research studies carried show the main reasons and factors by which the emotionality of words varies in a L1 and L2. As a practical practice, the results are taken as a base to create a series of activities meant to help the Spanish teacher prepare the material for their classes and it is especially aimed at those learners with Czech as a mother tongue. The first set of activities focuses on vocabulary teaching (verbs) in situations where words are learnt in a natural condition, similar to L1 acquisition. The second set allows the student to express emotions and feelings in their L2 both in and out of the classroom.
Bilingual preschool environment

This bachelor's thesis aims to examinate the bilingual educational environment in kindergarten. The theoretical part of the thesis describes bilingualism itself and the concepts associated with it. Other key areas outlined within the theoretical section are - bilingual family and its types, bilingual education and bilingual kindergartens. Furthermore, both the advantages and disadvantages of bilingualism are highlighted in the thesis along with analysis of speech development of bilingual and monolingual children. The aim of the practical part was to approach the bilingual educational environment with focus on its communication and the methods used. For this purpose, the author has conducted qualitative research in the form of case study, which took place for one day in a bilingual kindergarten in a Czech-German class. This section will reveal results of the kindergarten education observation and interview with both a German- and Czech-speaking teacher. Last parts of the thesis are dedicated to the author's personal experience with bilingualism and her insight into the issue.
A discourse analysis of the language spoken by Czech children

The thesis focuses on an analysis of the language use of Czech speaking children living abroad. In the theoretical part the concept of bilingualism is described, then the factors influencing speech skills are discussed. Also the Czech language is analysed there from different linguistic aspects. Later on the possibilities of learning Czech language abroad are considered. The research part covers the linguistic phenomenon based on observing the language use of Czech children living in Australia and New Zealand. The aim of the thesis is not only the analysis of audio records, but also findings about the particularity of bilingualism in the upbringing and about the question whether it is possible to learn Czech abroad and in what ways.
Growing up bilingual

The diploma thesis focuses on children growing up in the environment of two languages formed by distinct conditions. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part includes divergent notions on the phenomenon, characteristics as well as a typology of bilingualism. This part also covers pros and cons of upbringing a bilingual child based on enriching surveys and studies. Theoretical knowledge is implemented into the practical part, where a book analysis is the main focus. Based on the analysis, multiple suggestions, as well as pieces of advice, are going to be explored and proposed to target groups. The aim of the diploma thesis is to inform about the bilingual environment, that may play an essential role in a child development. The thesis appeals to beginning bilingual parents, teachers, carers or practitioners.
Musical program in pre-primary education for children with atypical language development

The master thesis with the topic: Music Programme For Preschool Children With Atypical Speech Development focuses mainly on speech development of children with different types of socio-cultural disadvantages. The theoretical part focuses on the effect of different mother tongues, bilingualism and other sociocultural disadvantages on speech development of preschool children. It highlights music education and its integrative character, especially in relation to physical education, drama and art education. The connection between music education and different types of learning is also found there, as well as the relationship of music education and the development of different types of intelligence as defined by Gardner. The theoretical part also presents the possibilities of using musical activities as a tool for supporting and nurturing the child's speech development, focusing on compensating for possible deficits expecially in the lexical-semantic and pragmatic levels of language. Last but not least, it characterizes some historical and contemporary Czech and international programmes that use music education as a tool in the personal and social development of children. The introduction of bilingual local names as a public policy process (case study)

This diploma thesis examines the public political process for the implementation of local bilingual names while focusing on the enforcement of this law for citizens with Polish nationality in the Těšin Region. The main objective is to explain why this policy was or was not changed, what the reasons were for the non-conformity of the policy objectives with the results and to discover the actual failures in the implementation process, where as a consequence, in some villages the right of the minority to use local bilingual names was not fulfilled or was beset with problems in some villages. The subject of the investigation of both the legal and the institutional aspect of the problem focuses on the participating subjects, where one of the main roles of the committee for national minorities on the board of the municipal representatives was the requirement to implement local bilingual names. The guidelines for understanding the tools, procedures and relations used were the initial theoretical points related to the institutions and their changes, the implementation process (top-down and bottom-up approaches), initial theoretical points explaining the responsibilities of the participating subjects and not the intended consequences of their actions and those of others. The research design is a case study.
