This bachelor thesis is an analysis of the political and social development of Philadelphia during the 18th century, primarily in the course of the American War of Independence and shortly after its end. Particular attention is paid to the participation of local society in public affairs and Benjamin Franklin's influence on society and his contribution to the field of culture and education. Also a status and importance of the city during the war and its impact on the residents is taken into consideration. I concentrate on the First and Second Continental Congress placed in Philadelphia and the causes that preceded the first meeting. At the conclusion attention is paid to postwar Philadelphia and its status of temporary capital city and I try to answer the question whether the city can be considered as the first capital of the emerging United States of America. Political and Cultural Influence of the USA on Italy in years 1945-1948
Pekařová, Karolína Daniella ; Koura, Jan (advisor) ; Pešta, Mikuláš (referee)
(in English) This diploma thesis deals with the influence of the United States of America on Italy during the years 1945 and 1948. One of the factors that played an important role in this issue was the Cold War, since it had an immense impact on American foreign policy as well as the changing relationship between Italy and the USA. With regard to American foreign policy, Italy was not really in the centre of its attention after the Second World War. This, however, changed after the relationship between the USSR and USA had deteriorated in 1946 and 1947, which brought a shift in the American stance towards the Apennine peninsula. The strength of the Communist party of Italy was a major cause for concern to the American administration worrying about the spread of communism in Western Europe. The thesis puts special emphasis on 'the Propaganda Battle' led by the American administration, namely the Ambassador in Rome James Dunn, and the newly established CIA. This 'battle' is viewed especially from a cultural perspective, as the communist propaganda campaigns focused mainly on film industry, the radio and newspapers. Key words (in English) Italy, the United States of America, 1948, Communist Party of Italy, Marshall plan, CIA

Pekařová, Karolína Daniella ; Flemrová, Alice (advisor) ; Piptová, Ivana (referee)
This bachelor thesis presents the parliamentary novel, which had been formed during the second half of 19th century and demonstrates the specifics of this "genre". For needs of the analysis I chosed five main novels: I Vecchi e I Giovani, I Viceré, L'imperio, Daniele Cortis a Le Vergini delle rocce. The text itself is composed by three main chapters. The first part contains a historical introduction of the time of the italian unification, which is necessary for understanding the political background of the parliamentary novel. Particular attention is paid to the affairs that are explicitly reflected in the novels. The historical background ends with the italian entry to the World War I. In the second part I present the authors - Luigi Pirandello, Federico De Roberto, Antonio Fogazzaro and Gabriele D'Annunzio - who reflects in their writings the events of the time, in which they lived. The last part contains the analysis of presented texts from the point of view of narratology and thematics. At the conclusion attention is paid to the summary of topics typical for parliamentary novel.
