Attempting to paralyze combat readiness of the Great Britain during the World War I Imperial Germany supported many separatist movements in the British Empire, also Irish secessionists, who decided to utilize the conflict for an uprising against British supremacy over Ireland. Already before World War I the Irish Unionists as well as Nationalists brought guns and ammunition from Germany that should be used in their fight for their interests in the Home Rule controversy. After the war broke out in 1914, organizers of the rising made through German embassy in the United States and revolutionary Irish-American organization Glan na Gael a contact with German government and military authorities that agreed with weapons supply and with forming of an Irish Brigade from the Irish POWs. But Irish rebels, represented in Germany by former diplomat Sir Roger Casement, demanded landing of German troops in Ireland, something that Berlin wasn't ready to fulfill. For the support of the Easter Rising in April 1916 Germans sent 20 000 rifles, ten machine guns and five millions rounds of ammunition that however never reached Irish insurgents.
