Bocianová, Kateřina ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Abrhám, Josef (referee)
The Barcelona Process represents the European Union's effort to define complex and coherent strategy towards the countries of the Mediterranean region. Mutual relations have been gradually developed from the 1960s; nevertheless only particular initiatives were undertaken with the aim to deal with the specific aspects of the relations. With regard to the development of the European Communities and considering events on the international scene it was necessary to define more complex strategy that would comprise not only economic aspects but also political, security, social and cultural aspects. The introduction of the thesis addresses to defining and arrangement of the external relations of the European Communities/European Union. Then it deals with the development of mutual relations until 1995 according to every decade, in which there are mentioned and described initiatives and activities of EC/EU in the Mediterranean region as well as events on the international scene that had significant impact on the shaping of the agenda. Year 1995 represents a break-through because of the fact that during the first Euro-Mediterranean Conference of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, held in Barcelona on 27 - 28 November 1995, the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership was created and we are talking about the starting point of the...
Participation and role of EU in resolving Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict
Hasanov, Ahmad ; Riegl, Martin (advisor) ; Bocianová, Kateřina (referee)
The thesis analyses the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the region of Nagorno-Karabakh which both parties claim to be their historical territory. The thesis explains how the conflict started and continued with a full-scale military conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which is commonly referred to as the Nagorno-Karabakh War. One of the most important chapter of the thesis is the description of roles played by foreign mediators such as Russia, Kazakhstan, Iran and Turkey. All those countries pursued their own geopolitical and economic goals in the region, and wished to actively participate in it in order to spread their influence. The European Union has constantly been playing an important role in settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict thanks to its active involvement in all peacekeeping and mediation processes in the region. Nonetheless, despite all international efforts, the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh still continues as of today, and the parties cannot come to any compromise due to the antagonistic nature of their territorial disputes for Nagorno-Karabakh. Both, Azerbaijan and Armenia have started actively deploying their troops on the mutual borders, which raises fears among the international community that a new war for Nagorno-Karabakh might start already in the near future.

Euro-Mediterranean Policy-Perspectives of development influence of Spain and France
Bocianová, Kateřina ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Hnízdo, Bořivoj (referee) ; Adamcová, Lenka (referee)
The dissertation analyses development of Euro-Mediterranean policy since 2006 up to the present. Therefore the work analyses the newest institution Union for the Mediterranean, European Neighborhood Policy, change of institutional framework of the European foreign policy due to the Lisbon Treaty and also reaction of the European Union on the Arab spring and ongoing economic crisis whose impact on the external relation is significant. On the grounds of theoretical definition when on one hand the European Union presents itself as a normative actor (according to constructivist approaches) and on the other hand it pursues its realistic interests the dissertation concludes that this dilemma between normative rhetoric and realistic pursuing of interests leads to ineffective and untrustworthy foreign policy of the European Union in the Mediterranean. Then the dissertation brings comparison between French and Spanish approaches (whose interests are similarly defined in the Mediterranean) for influencing formulation and conduct of the EU foreign policy in this region. After application of the concept of Europeanization there is a conclusion that despite similar interests these two member states use different strategies toward the European level which in the end can bring influence in the European institutions.

Šlapal, Jan ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Bocianová, Kateřina (referee)
After the Eastern enlargement in the year 2004 and 2007 the European Union is on the threshold of another expansion. Turkey and Croatia are the first countries that received the official candidate status. Turkey is the longest waiting contender for the adoption into the European Union structures; Croatia is the most anticipated candidate to receive the membership and should become a member on July 1st , 2013. The thesis "Comparison of preparedness of economies of Turkey and Croatia to join the European Union" aims to compare the economic readiness of these two countries for European Union full membership, detects the cons and pros of possible integration and also explores the un-economical aspects that are (or where) the obstacles in the integration process of both countries. The goal of this thesis is to answer the question whether it is the theory of neo-realism or the theory of neo- functionalism that explains the current accession process of Turkey and Croatia to the European Union. In the past the European integration has overcome many obstacles, has achieved many substantial results and due to its effectiveness has managed to extend the territory of peace, stability and prosperity across the continent. The coming sixth wave of enlargement has a difficult goal but it is also a great challenge...
