Duration of university studies in the Czech Republic and the effect of fees for excessive study duration
Fliegl, Tomáš ; Veselý, Arnošt (advisor) ; Vlk, Aleš (referee)
Topic of the thesis is the duration of studies at universities in the Czech Republic and the effect of fees for excessive study duration on the duration of studies. It focuses on undergraduate programs at public universities, for which the fees are applicable. Author exploits data from the national student register and data on the amount of fees from most Czech universities to build a regression model. Awareness of students on the fees policy was determined by questionnaire for participants of a widely used admission test (National Comparative Test Scio). It has been found, that at the average, 41% of students extended nominal length of study program before completing it, with highest share observed in humanities. About 10% of students extended the nominal length of study by more than one year. Fees apply to one-fifth of the students, half of them because their unsuccessful studies had been attributed to their actual length of study. The results show that time to degree is only insignificantly related to the potential amount of the fee; only in the case of students of one public university we have found mild relationship and CZK 1,000 fee increase should shorten time to degree by 6 days. Influence on the length of unsuccessful studies is more pronounced and represents 10 to 90 days per CZK 1,000. Low effect...

Cabalková, Anna ; Veselý, Arnošt (advisor) ; Pýchová, Silvie (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the situation of emerging private elementary schools in the Czech Republic. As this is a new phenomenon, only recognised in the past few years, there is little detailed evidence that would provide the necessary information about these schools; such as what kind of schools are registered and why they were created. This paper aim is to identify and describe the main types of these schools and understand their functions. The first part is to comprehend the shift in education and stress out the influence and role of new actors. This is achieved through providing the different perspectives on education and through description of supply and demand for education. This new phenomenon is also supported by the Theory of Exit, Voice & Loyalty which explains behaviour of private school's initiators and founders. The thesis also examines different authors' and publications' views on alternative and traditional schooling, private, public and non-public schools and the difficulties in comparison across different educational systems. The practical part and its research offers systematic and objective evaluation of the new schools being established and how they work. Extracting Information from Medical Texts
Zvára, Karel ; Svátek, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Veselý, Arnošt (referee) ; Skalská, Hana (referee)
The aim of my work was to find out the specific features of Czech medical reports in terms of the possibility of extracting specific information from them. For my work, I had a total of 268 anonymized narrative medical reports from two outpatient departments. I have studied standards for preserving electronic health records and for transferring clinical information between healthcare information systems. I have also participated in the process of implementing electronic medical record in the field of dentistry. First of all, I tried to process narrative medical reports using natural language processing (NLP) tools. I came to the conclusion that narrative medical reports in the Czech language are very different than a typical Czech text, especially because it mostly contains short telegraphic phrases and the texts lack typical Czech sentence structure. It also contains many misspellings, acronyms and abbreviations. Another problem was the absence of existence of the Czech translation of the main international classification systems. Therefore I decided to continue the research by developing the method for pro-processing the input text for translation and its semantic annotation. The main objective of this part of the research was to propose a method and support software for interactive correction...
Multicultural Education: Construction of Identity in Czech Educational System
Česká, Tereza ; Veselý, Arnošt (advisor) ; Mouralová, Magdalena (referee)
This master's thesis is concerned with the understanding of identity in the multicultural education in the Czech educational system - more precisely by the construction of identity. Multicultural education is the main educational stream, when it comes to the education against racism, xenophobia, intolerance or discrimination. In the Czech Republic, the multicultural education is one of the cross-subjects defined in the Educational Framework Programs. Lately, there have been many criticisms and concerns regarding multicultural education's tools including the identity politics due to its inability of reaching the proclaimed goals and objectives. Sometimes, it does quite the opposite - it reproduces dangerous stereotypes in the society and perpetuates discrimination. Identity is the key element in the multicultural education. How we perceive ourselves and others, influences many spheres of our lives. Whether the groups are constructed positively or negatively influences for example the allocation of benefits. Within this regard, through the discursive analysis, the construction of identity in the multicultural education is examined. It has been proven that the multicultural education tends to either construct the identity on the basis of external characteristics, which are visible on the first sight (skin...

Kulesza, Izabela ; Veselý, Arnošt (advisor) ; Kohoutek, Jan (referee)
Bibliographic note KULESZA, Izabela A. PATH DEPENDENCE IN AMERICAN PUBLIC EDUCATION . Mater thesis. Charles University, Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute of Sociological Studies. Supervisor Prof. PhDr. Arnošt Veselý, Ph.D. Abstract This thesis is concerned with the study of public education in the United States as a path-dependent phenomenon. By reviewing the historical background of the institution of education, several key sequences emerge that are foundational principles. They are: a decentralized system, secular education, universal access, decreasing the achievement gap and global competition. Testing these sequences against school choice theories shows the foundational principles behind traditional public schooling in America are being challenged. The institutional reproduction of this pathway is likely to be interrupted in the utilitarian, functional, power and legitimation explanations of path dependence theory. Keywords public education, school choice, path dependence theory Range of thesis: 66

Begu, Edona ; Veselý, Arnošt (advisor) ; Aberra, Rokia Aidahis (referee)
Pre-university Educational System and inequalities in Kosovo Edona Begu Master thesis Abstract The institutional structure of the education system is crucial for understanding the educational inequalities. Kosovo is a young country and its education system is undergoing major reforms. Hence, studies and research in the impact that the educational system arrangement has on inequalities barley exist. The main goal of this thesis was to understand the institutional setting of pre-university education system in Kosovo and its impact in inequalities, especially in terms of labour market outcomes, social status outcomes and educational outcomes. After evaluation of Kosovo's education system along standardization and stratification dimensions introduced by Allmendinger, in the widely known typology for educational inequalities, Kosovo's pre-university education resulted to be highly standardized and highly stratified. Thus, the quality of education provision is uniform for all the students, which is reflected in their similar educational outcomes in PISA test. However, the students are stratified in different tracks, which influence and restrict their future outcomes in labour market and their status in the society. These conclusions were backed up with secondary data analysis which states that there are no...
