Art, avant-garde and kitsch in works of Clement Greenberg and Matei Călinescu
Taltynová, Marie ; Kulka, Tomáš (advisor) ; Dadejík, Ondřej (referee)
Bachelor thesis Art, avant-garde and kitsch in works of Clement Greenberg and Matei Călinescu deals with kitsch in relation to avant-garde and to contemporary art, and to the visual arts in general. It is primarily based on the essay Avant-Garde and Kitsch by American critic Clement Greenberg and the essay Kitsch by Romanian literary scholar Matei Călinescu. The first part is devoted to outlining the concept of kitsch according to these two theorists, with an emphasis on the thinking about the origin and nature of kitsch. The second part deals with revising Greenberg's beliefs that condemn popular culture, official culture and academism for kitsch and highlights avant-garde as the only worthy manifestation of art of his time. On this basis, the work examines why avant-garde seemed like the pure opposite of kitsch in the thirties, and why to the contrary today we find that contemporary art is often influenced by kitsch.
Critical reactions on Edward Bullough's concept of psychical distance
Adámková, Veronika ; Ševčík, Miloš (advisor) ; Dadejík, Ondřej (referee)
In this thesis we are focusing at the notion of psychical distance first introduced in the work "'Psychical Distance' as a Factor in Art and as an Aesthetic Principle" from Edward Bullough. There were many responses to the concept of psychical distance from many authors, some of them have rejected this notion, and others tried to support it. Initially we provided brief interpretation of Bulough's work with the focus at parts, which are cited and investigated most frequently in mentioned interpretations. We are interpreting and comparing gradually the most popular works, which involve the notion of psychical distance with respect to Bullough's original concept. We are pointing out the difference between notions psychical distance and aesthetic attitude, because they are mistaken one for another by many different authors. This thesis tries to provide new look at some papers responding to Bullough's conception.

The thesis discusses Chalupecký within a broader contemporary context, and uses comparative method to illustrate the complexity of Chalupecký's thought together with the concept of new mythology he shared with some of his contemporaries. The thesis consists of three parts which freely correspond to the sequential progression of Chalupecký's thought and his conception of the avant-garde. The thesis stresses the originality of Chalupecký's approach to modern art, and considers its colorful manifestations.

Aesthetic Experience, Paradox of Time and Event Horizons
Pačesová, Klára ; Dadejík, Ondřej (advisor) ; Ševčík, Miloš (referee)
The main topic of the thesis is the temporal dimension of aesthetic experience in its relation to memory and imagination. The initial approach to the topic is the concept of relationship between time and narrative of Paul Ricoeur, primarily contained in his three volume book entitled Time and Narrative. Gradually, the specificity of the time experience will be investigated, as well as operations of memory and imagination in narrative fiction. Attention is focused on a narrative as means to designate a coherent whole, respectively a meaningful concatenation of events. The main relationship explored is the interaction between the world of work and the lived world. The functionality of theoretical views is presented on the work of French director Chris Marker, especially on his two films La Jetée (1962) and Sans Soleil (1982).
The Question of Origins of Value in Naturalistic Philosophy of Irving Singer
Hlávka, Jan ; Dadejík, Ondřej (advisor) ; Zuska, Vlastimil (referee)
Irving Singer's theory of value declares itself a member of american naturalistic and pragmatic tradition. It refuses metaphysical speculation on behalf of empirism and stresses the processual character of every experience, focusing more on its imaginatively-affective rather than rational part. Singer distinguishes two basic types of valuation: appriciation of an object, seen as an instrument for a given function, and spontaneous bestowal of value, which values the object on the basis of its own qualities - generating an affective attachement in the process. In a healthy organism, both ought to cooperate to support the fullness of life-in-the-world. Their harmonization is a matter of aesthetics as recognized in the case of love or works of art. This thesis criticizes Singer's project from its own point of view - the american naturalism. In the first chapter, it describes closely Singer's point-of-departure and places it within historical tradition. The matter of the "intrinsic value controversy" is drawn here as well. Following two chapters probe into the pillars of Singer's systém - the conceptions of appriciation, bestowal, imagination and idealization. In comparison with the doctrines of John Dewey, George Santayana and christian situational ethics, fundamentally eclectical character of Singer's...
Our country is beautiful today, but tomorrow will be more beautiful. Relation of the theory of socialistic realims to the topic nature and landscape.
Charvát, Ondřej ; Stibral, Karel (advisor) ; Dadejík, Ondřej (referee)
3 ABSTRACT Humankind in its whole being is reflecting an environment by culture and visual art. Different cultural periods value nature and environment differently, what have a strong impact on nature management - some culture periods have a strong feeling for protecting nature for its own value while others see nature just as a source of materials or energy. This relationship is possible to find in art artifacts made during particular culture period. The communistic idea was ruling for almost half of the twentieth century in former Czechoslovakia. And its point of view has strong negative impact on state of nature and environment. As an official style of art socialist realism was approved at the same time. Its main goal was portraying a new communistic world, new communistic society and new communistic man. Aim of this work is to find out how the socialistic realism displays nature and landscape topic in art pieces. In core of this work stays the assumption, that socialistic realism has no value for nature itself, on the contrary it appreciates only it's rebuilding for easier exploitation. Findings are based on study of theoretical art texts and art-pieces from the period 1945 - 1958. Keywords: nature, landscape, aesthetic, art, socialist realism, landscape painting
