Mephisto: Novel of a Career. The Moralic Responsibility of an Artist. A Comparison between Klaus Mann and Gustaf Gründgens.
Wunderlin, Katja ; Weinberg, Manfred (advisor) ; Tvrdík, Milan (referee)
The work deals with the ambivalent relationship between Klaus Mann and Gustaf Gründgens. Former political and artistic colleagues and friends chose opposite paths during the time of National Socialism. The prior thrust in their relationship allowed Klaus Mann to process the person of Gustaf Gründgens in the time-critical novel Mephisto. On the one hand, Klaus Mann describes the path of a cultivated supporter of the regime, the talented opportunist and characterless careerist while the novel is also Klaus Mann's dealing with his past friend. The aim of my work is to compare the moral positions and development of the two artists during the Nazi-regime. The basis for this comparison is the novel Mephisto. Keywords: Klaus Mann, Gustaf Gründgens, Career, Comparison, Moral Responsibility, Artist, National Socialism, Ambivalent Relationship of Klaus Mann and Gustaf Gründgens

Běličová, Alžběta ; Weinberg, Manfred (advisor) ; Tvrdík, Milan (referee)
The work deals with pictures of GDR in German prose written after 1989 by authors coming from GDR and born after 1960. Literary pictures of GDR could be perceived as reflections of memories of individuals or as fictional images of this country. These pictures can't be compared with analyses researched by historians. The main aim is to show how these pictures create the collective memory of this state and how can the collective memory influences picture of GDR, that plays dominant role in today's German society. The case study compares nine literary texts and shows different aspects of reality of life in GDR. Humour and nostalgia were used as an important part of this picture. The comparison includes parallels and differences, in picturing this country, used by two last generations of authors in GDR.
The Exile Novels of Klaus Mann
Kopřivová, Renata ; Tvrdík, Milan (advisor) ; Weinberg, Manfred (referee)
Klaus Mann - the oldest son of the writer Thomas Mann created his greatest writings in European exile between the years 1934 and 1939. Mann is considered to be principal representative of German exile. The objective of this thesis is to reflect the older and newer approaches to exile literature in the detailed analysis of Klaus Mann and his representative works. The first chapters are dealing with the reasons of author's exile and points out literary influences reflected in his exile works. Moreover, it accentuates the most significant aspects of author's activity in European and later in American exile. The third chapter is dealing with the author's conception of writer as a literary existence, which is essential for complete understanding of Mann's work. Last three chapters represent analysis of three exile novels of Klaus Mann: Flucht in den Norden (1934), Mephisto. Roman einer Karriere (1936) and Der Vukan. Roman unter Emigranten (1939). Through focusing on protagonists and on the main literary motives in the selected novels, it demonstrates the author's reflection of exile and Nazi Germany. Utopia in the Works of Adalbert Stifter
Smetana, Jiří ; Tvrdík, Milan (advisor) ; Weinberg, Manfred (referee)
Name of the author: Jiří Smetana Name of the MA thesis: Utopia in the Works of Adalbert Stifter University: Charles University in Prague Faculty: Faculty of Arts Department: Institute of the Germanic Studies Supervisor: Doc. PhDr. Milan Tvrdík, CSc. Place and date of publishing: Prague, March 2011 The subject of the present work is Adalbert Stifter's utopia. The aim is to outline its main essence and in part describe the motives that had led Stifter to his utopia. The work describes the artistic, political and social background of the Biedermeier era and approximates Stifter as its principal representative in Austrian literature. Adalbert Stifter's talent was versatile; he had affection for nature and art. Art was one of his most faithful friends. Stifter's Biedermeier literary works are original and in a certain sense possess great depth. For every opinion in these works is put down rationally. In this regard we would be hard pressed to find selfcontent in Stifter's late work. This opinion is also shared by the Austrian writer Peter Rosegger, who regards Adalbert Stifter higher than Johann Wolfgang Goethe for this very reason. As Rosegger rightly states, Stifter's style is also very original.1 This work takes note of the utopian features in some of Stifter's short stories and in his educational...
The "New subjectivism" in the Swiss-German literature in the Seventies of the 20th century
Kimla, Tomáš ; Tvrdík, Milan (advisor) ; Weinberg, Manfred (referee)
The thesis deals with the German-speaking Swiss literature of the Sixties and Seventies in the 20th century. The crux of the thesis consists in a characterization of sociopolitical situation in Switzerland after 1968 and it also outlines the reaction of the literary public to the considerably politicized public events that started to sink into literary topics which resulted in a palpable threat to the artistic independence of the contemporary Swiss authors. The first part of the thesis conducts an analysis of causes and consequences of the politicization of social events and primarily focuses on the transformation of structure of Swiss society at the turn of the Sixties and Seventies, furthermore, it deals with the uncompromising reaction on the part of the Swiss society to the threat of state subversion which, in fact, resulted from the strengthening of leftist groups in the Swiss territory. The second part of the thesis deals with the reaction of the literary public to the turbulent social events and outlines main tendencies of a new literary style that originated from the excessive politicization of literary topics, namely the literature of "New subjectivism". The final part of the thesis is made up of a literary analysis of three characteristic pieces of work that, on the cusp of the literature of "New...
Alchemistic features in the novels of Gustav Meyrink
Markvartová, Eva ; Tvrdík, Milan (advisor) ; Weinberg, Manfred (referee) ; Glosíková, Viera (referee)
The dissertation "Alchemistic features in the novels of Gustav Meyrink/Alchemistische Züge in den Romanen von Gustav Meyrink" addresses the question of how alchemy is reflected in the works of the author and the extent to which it constitutes the intellectual profile of his novels. As a basis for the analysis I chose the books The Golem/Der Golem (1915), The White Dominican/Der weiße Dominikaner (1921) and The Angel of the West Window/Der Engel vom westlichen Fenster (1926), in which, in my opinion, Hermetic art plays a very significant role. I try to show how uniquely Meyrink integrates the Royal Art into the conception of his works. Alchemists call their efforts a Great Work/Opus Magnum. I perceive the Opus Magnum and its individual components (putrefaction, albedo, rubedo) in selected works as a structure that is expressed both comprehensively (e.g. in how Meyrink handles the subject matter, the characters and the space), as well as in particular moments (e.g. in individual motifs). The Great Work can be seen as a red thread that runs through all the aforementioned novels. Furthermore, in the book The Golem I also took account of Tarot symbolism, because between alchemy and Tarot mysticism there can be found many points of contact. The aim of the work itself is to explain the most important ideas of the...
Gender and memory in the intergenerational debates on the Nazism era. Culturological interpretations of selected recent German novels
Pučalíková, Lenka ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (advisor) ; Weinberg, Manfred (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with three contemporary German novels from the point of view of cultural studies and social psychology, in which the characters within the institution of family intergenerationally cope with the National Socialist past. Quotations from the texts aim to document how the thematic units of recollection, memory, generation and gender are related, and also to enlighten the fine nuances in the used terms, such as collective, cultural and communicative memory, or official and private memory. Family talk serves as a means of communication; it demonstrates what the individual members of the family remember in relation to the period of National Socialism, World War II and the Holocaust, what they have forgotten, how the memories differ according to generation or gender, and what changes the memories undergo over time. KEYWORDS Recollection, memory, remembering, forgetting, generation, gender, collective memory, cultural memory, communicative memory, generation memory, family memory, family talk, family history, family stories, National Socialism
Asthetics and attitudes of the "new objectivity" in the "Zeitroman" of the late Weimar Republic
Jobová, Karolina ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (advisor) ; Weinberg, Manfred (referee)
- english The focal points of this thesis are the aesthetic principles and categories of the "new objectivity" and their development in the literary scientific discourse (1913-1932), as well as their establishment in the literary production as a reaction to the preceding period of expressionism. Using the four "new objective" novels, the goal is to demonstrate the artistic procedures, issues and typical characters of the "new objectivity" as a dominant literary movement of the '20's and the beginning of '30's. At the same time, a special attention is dedicated to the social climate, the impact of the Great Depression on the professional life and on unemployment as well as to the emancipation of women and picture of "new woman", the polarization of the political spectrum, the political and ideological positions of the typical characters, as well as the role of the media such as film and press and other aspects of the contemporary reality, all of which is reflected in the selected literary works. As a starting point of the stylistic and content analysis were selected "new objective" novels of the late period of the Weimar Republic, published after 1929. Since they all reflect the current events of the time, they can be classified as period novels ("Zeitromane"). The following novels were analysed:...
Autobiographical fragments in the modern German literature: selfperformance in the liminal autobiographies
Mrázková, Alena ; Petříček, Miroslav (advisor) ; Weinberg, Manfred (referee) ; Svatoň, Vladimír (referee)
Autobiographical fragments from Late 1 9th and Early 20th Century, characterized and analyzed in this PhD thesis, demonstrate different approaches to the crisis of the subject and the language in Modernism, and how they are reflected in the gerne of the Autobiography. Experimental texts written by A. Stifter, Klabund, C. Morgenstern, H. Mann, H. Hesse, A. Döblin, G. Kaiser, H. H. Jahnn, K. Tucholsky, 1. Wassermann, C. Zuckmayer, C. Sternheim and K. Valentin are characterized by the communicative openness, irony and wit; the boarder stmcture, liminal existence and crossing of factual, textual and language boarders; self-performance and the discussion of the relation between the text and the presented "reality". They document the most important changes in the concepts of the Modernism.
Mythology and history. Studies on the literature of German romanticism and postwar period (1945-1953)
Úvodní diskuse ukazuje vývoj moderního pojmu mýtu od antropologických konceptů, jež shrnuje do kategorie 'mytické epistémé'(L. Lévy-Bruhl, E. Cassirer, M. Eliade), přes strukturální analýzu (C. Lévi-Strauss) až k historizaci pojmu mýtu v paradigmatech literární historie a "dějin idejí", k nimž patří i preferovaný koncept G. von Graevenitze. Studie věnovaná romantismu ukazuje kontinuitu mezi ranými koncepty tzv. "nové mytologie" (F. Schlegel, Schelling) a diskurzem o mýtu v pozdějších fázích (A. von Arnim, J. Grimm). Interpretace próz Heinrich von Ofterdingen F. von Hardenberga (Novalise), Der goldne Topf E.T.A. Hoffmanna a Die Majorats-Herren A. von Arnima dokládají kritickou recepci a dekompozici "nové mytologie". Část zaměřená na literaturu kolem r. 1945 analyzuje pojem mýtu v nacistické ideologické 'vědě' a literatuře. Ukazuje důležité tendence v esejistice poválečných let: snahu o očištění mytologie jako...
