How to recognize an apple "farm"? Way of communication and formation "farm" at Holešovice market
Čižmářová, Hana ; Ezzeddine, Petra (advisor) ; Pauknerová, Karolína (referee)
My diploma thesis, How to recognize an apple "farm"?, examine the way of creating farmers market at Holešovice. I come from Actor-network theory which sees as actor not only people but the objects and organizations too. This theory does not distinguish human and non-human actors. The data required for analysis, I obtained mainly through participant observation, interviews and analysis of material culture. My work is focused on the discovery of meanings which visitors attribute to "farmers". Further, the ways of communication of this meanings. Finally I reveal the actors who construct the ideas about farmers and the real market. On the creating of market participate not only organizers, vendors and visitors. I show that the time and context of the market, holding the tradition of vegetable markets, the place of performance, the size of hall, weather, seasonality and the possibility of electronic communication play the important role too.
Flea Market Kolbenova Market as Space, Market as Organism
Klouzalová, Pavla ; Pauknerová, Karolína (advisor) ; Novotná, Hedvika (referee)
My diploma thesis, Kolbenova "flea market" - market as a space, market as an organism, searches what is the nature of such a place as perceived by its visitors. I claim that the market can be taken to be an organism continuously reacting to incentives from both the market surroundings and the market participants. The perception of the market is determined by four main elements - space, in which it is being held, temporal aspect of the market and its influence on the changes of the place, the products being marketed and the participants themselves. Based on the analysis of the data gained mostly by the participating observation and semistructured and random interviews, I have concluded that due to the interacting nature of the four aspects the Kolbenova flea market is not a fixed subject, but is a constantly changing and reacting mixture of the four aforementioned aspects.
The Meaning and Perception of Local Smal-Town Cinema
Bargel, Robert ; Gibas, Petr (advisor) ; Pauknerová, Karolína (referee)
This diploma thesis is an ethnographic study of a local small-town cinema in Řevnice near Prague. It analyzes social, cultural - or symbolic - meanings of this cinema with respect to a wider social and cultural context. Because the cinema, as a place, is constituted by the social practice of "cinema-going", this thesis is a "thick description" of spectators' lived experience in that space. The author of this thesis employs the interpretative approach of Geertz as well as the approaches of phenomenologicaly oriented thinkers of Patočka, Berger, Luckmann and Tuan. The author's research reveals that in current times, there is a strong symbolic polarity between small cinemas and multiplexes. Small cinemas are seen to be in opposition to the "popcorn culture" of the multiplexes on the levels of aesthetics, morals, ethics etc. In the case of the cinema in Řevnice, the local character of the facility is very important too. It not only distinguishes this cinema from multilpexes, but it also helps form local identity incorporated by the town and its inhabitants. The author also points out the differences between young and older people's perception of cinemas in general caused by their different previous experiences. In order to capture the wider cultural context of the cinema, the author uses the work of...
Contribution to the Studies of the Adapatation Strategies of the Hunter-Gatherer Communities in the Late Paleolith and Mesolith
Čuláková, Katarína ; Matoušek, Václav (advisor) ; Pauknerová, Karolína (referee)
This work is concerned with changes in settlement strategy of the hunther-gatherer communities throughout late paleolith and mesolith. The aim of the thesis is to present the changes of settlement strategy in the relation to the sharp changes in natural environment at the turn of the pleistocene and holocene period. The thesis examines this issue in a wider context of Bohemia, whereas particular locations of the sites are illustrated on the example of Sloupnice region. In the region of Eastern Bohemia, we can verify through observation our postulate that the mesolithic locations had changed significantly, in comparison to late paleolithic, because usually the sites with late paleolithic settlement show no signs of mesolithics settlement (exceptions notwithstanding). The thesis presents a base for creation of a predictive model of appearance of preneolithic settlement, using a Geographic Information Systems. The work also includes phenomenological observation of the landscape, enhancing our insight about hunther-gatherer landscape. As an example of possible public presentation of this research, the final chapter describes a proposal of a footpath with informational boards on the topic of this thesis.
Body - walking - lanscape: Prehistorical agricultural cultures in the flatlands of Czechia
Pauknerová, Karolína ; Matoušek, Václav (advisor) ; Gojda, Martin (referee) ; Pleinerová, Ivana (referee)
Landscape is not only a material world out there since it also represents a particular way of seeing and understanding the world around. I draw on the idea that by researching landscapes of long gone people we can get closer to their (life)world. In behind of the whole research project lies the idea that the way people dwell in the world resonates with how they understand it. Within the research I employ the methodology of the phenomenology of landscape. Phenomenological research of landscapes inhabited by people in prehistoric ages is concerned with gathering and analysing sensual data such as view from the locality in question, colours, smells, texture, etc. at the place. Human body and the most common bodily activity - walking - is used as a research tool. I explore settlement strategies of four prehistoric cultures - Linear Pottery, Stroked Pottery, Funnel Beakers, and Aunjetitz cultures - within three flatlands in Bohemia (Kladno plateau, the area southwards from the city of Pilsen and the region south and south-westwards form the town of Kolín). At Kolín region and Kladno plateau I compare settlement distribution of two cultures: the Aunjetitz and Stroked pottery cultures at Kolín and Funnel Beakers and Aunjetitz cultures at Kladno. At Pilsen region I concentrated solely on Linear Pottery culture. The...
Forest industries in experimental archaeology
Pauknerová, Karolína ; Popelka, Miroslav (referee) ; Matoušek, Václav (advisor)
The diploma work informed by the theoretical platform of postprocessualism deals with forest industries in the context of experimental archaeology and particularly with questions of how to research and present them. Forest industries are defined by the author as branches of handicraft closely connected to forest both spatially and regarding raw material. Tar, charcoal and potash productions are presented in detail (their technological aspects, chemical substance, terminological problems, and use of the products are discussed and a brief overview of archaeological research of production places is offered). In the chapter on experimental archaeology, the author elucidates the sense of experiment and presents her own division of experiments in archaeology to science-nature-experiments and experiments-simulacra. Further on, the author describes particular experiments made by experimental archaeology and compares them with how forest industries are presented in museum. In the practical part of the paper, experiments with tar production in pits carried out by the author between 2007 and 2009 are described and discussed.
Project of the Center of experimental archeology in Únětice
Pauknerová, Karolína ; Matoušek, Václav (advisor) ; Fridrichová Sýkorová, Ivana (referee)
Based on postprocesualism theories, this master's thesis provides data for setting up the Centre of Experimental Archaeology in Únětice near Prague, designed to pursue an experimental research of Unetice culture agriculture settlement. This project aims to provide space for carrying out archaelogical experiments on the one hand, and to present the results of archaelogical research to public in an innovative way on the other. In addition, it might play an important role in the touristic development of the village.
