The thesis Religious Life In South Bohemia In The Period of 1948-1989 deals with the issue of limitations of Catholic religious life from the Czechoslovak state. Due to the fact that after the February 1948 the Communist goverment begun to publish "new canon laws" and started targeted restrictions in the church life, it influenced countless life stories of believers. By using the method of oral history, studying achival sources of South Bohemian Regional National Committee and history literature, in my thesis I was trying to approach at least some aspects of that time in the lives of seven witnesses comprising four catholic priest and three laymen. Keywords: catholic church, policy, religion, oral history, canon laws, communism
Magazine Květen
Mečíř, Vojtěch ; Houda, Přemysl (advisor) ; Franc, Martin (referee)
Kveten was a monthly magazine for literature and art (and by its third year also for "life"), which was published under the auspices of the Union of Czechoslovak Writers from September 1956 to June 1959. It was founded as a magazine for "aspiring writers", but quite soon this concept proved to be unsustainable and members of the editorial board started to give the magazine its own new look, which got even a more comprehensible form during the II. Czechoslovak Writers Congress, after young poets (and theorists) manifested the "Poetry of Everyday Life". It was, however, defined quite generally and maybe even vaguely, which is the fact the authors were struggling with during the following year. At the same time they are exposed to the pressure of official authorities as "anti-revisionism" began to destroy liberal environment that prevailed around 1956. Kveten tried to resist this tendency. In addition, at that time young theorists found a firmer basis, which gradually became unacceptable for the regime. At the beginning of 1959 there comes a wave of heavy critcism and results in abolishing the magazine. In my thesis I demonstrate through archival research, oral history and semiotic analysis that despite the abolition the management of Kveten maintained the principle of "partiality" and is guilty rather for...

The Cultural and Science Policy of the Communist Party and the Ideologization of Social Science in Czechoslovakia 1945-1960. Abstract This study deals with the cultural and science policy of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in 1945-1960 from the perspective of meeting the policy's main aim, i.e. a general acceptance of the communist ideology of Marxism-Leninism. The period started with formulating a programme of social and political transformation from the "national and democratic revolution" to a "socialist revolution", followed up by the proclamation of "accomplishing the socialist construction". Having reached a power monopoly, the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia concentrated on a cultural revolution conceived as "a conversion of culture and people's thinking toward the Marxist-Leninist world-view". The communist cultural and science policy is therefore analysed in the context of the Marxist discourse and through the forms of reshaping the social science predestined to spread the Marxist philosophy. More specifically, my research focused on the development of university and college education policy as a part of the communist cultural and science project. In particular, the constitution of political education and teaching Marxism- Leninism at universities is observed as a key instrument of shaping...
Rumford’s Soup and Other Delicacies. The Poor Man’s Diet in the Habsburg Monarchy in the First Half of the 19th Century
Franc, Martin
The subject of this essay is the standard dietary composition in the poor sections of society in the Central european Habsburg Monarchy during the first half of the 19th century. Thee study does not cover instances of emergency situations such as those of famine or war. According to the data recorded in sources, the standard diet of the poor was unexceptionally dominated by the vegetable component, at that time still comprised largely of flour-based food including bread, whereas potatoes served as a staple food for the poor only in certain localities. Another important dietary component were pulses and, as a valuable supplement, also other vegetables and fruit.
