Foster care - negotiating between care and work and gender aspects of care

The bachelor thesis deals with foster care and its position on the boundary of care and work. The term care is understood as "care from love" in the family, which according to societal ideas should be provided regardless of the existence of financial rewards. The term work is used in the sense of paid employment. The boundary is examined on a general and gender level. The core of the bachelor thesis is qualitative research which is based on the analysis of semi-structured interviews with eight foster carers, namely with four long-term male foster carers and four long-term female foster carers in pairs. The thesis concludes that foster care reflects the established gender order, within which care is an activity that is inseparably linked to the identity of women. However, this identity is also professional in nature and penetrates the field of paid work. Nevertheless only women construct their professional identity in the context of foster care and the boundary of foster care between care and work is therefore gendered. In addition the thesis shows through the analysis of the perception of financial rewards by foster carers that "care from love" and the money provided for it are not in conflict, but on the contrary can provide a symbolic expression of the value of care itself. Civic engagement and health care system

The diploma thesis focuses on impact of civic engagement on health care system. It studies to what level this participation helps health care system transformation and change of a relationship between patients and political and professional authorities. It's aim is to provide a critical sociological analysis and explain social processes accompanying patients' engagement by using examples. Patient organisations - an institutionalised form of civic society with a potential to evoke social change - get into scope here. The ambition of this thesis is to show the applicability of the reflexivity concept to the area of health care, to enrich this analytical framework by multilevel approach to the health care system and therefore add to the discourse around civic engagement phenomenon by a systemic and structured view of dynamic relationships between patient organisations and health care system. The findings of the author are based on an analysis of semi-structured interviews with patient organisations representatives and available documents. Consumption of animal-based products among ecologically active individuals

The diploma thesis deals with the paradox that arises based on a conflict of actions and opinions on the consumption of animal products. The aim of the work was to reveal the social factors that cause this discrepancy, assuming that social factors play an important role. This assumption is based on the consideration of meat as a social construct rooted in culture, and thus the consumption of meat is examined in this paper not as an individual decision but as a result of the influences of different institutions and social structures. This paradox is being studied on ecologically active individuals, and it is assumed that in this case the discrepancy between opinions on animal products and actual behaviour will be even more pronounced. The conclusion of the work reveals as one of the most important factors family and traditions, which cause that individuals are afraid of exclusion from the social group of the family and at the same time they want to be true to traditions. Respondents often preferred to conform to members of the groups to which they belong or to culture and traditions. The work also deals with the guilt caused by this discrepancy, taking into account the impact of ecology as an external factor.

The role of family and close social relationships in the narratives of Israeli women who experienced stillbirt

This thesis examines the social context of stillbirth and its impact on women's life and on their relationships with their family members. The study sample includes 8 adult women from Israel. Israel is a country characterized by a high number of children in families and the centrality of religion in society. The methodology used in this study was semi-structured interviews. Our results were similar to those of previous studies in terms of the partner's attitude to the event. On the other hand, the results included novel findings regarding other family members' coping with the stillbirth event. Solidarity and other types of empathy were found to be relevant according to women's stories; whereas some filial norms were met with more ambivalent responses. This thesis demonstrates the importance of intergenerational solidarity, the mass influence of cultural context and ambivalence within everyday situations and the meaning of empathy from close family members. Particular attention needs to be paid to the intergenerational perspective, which focuses on the family (couple, divorced or single units) or the wider society in which they live. Moreover, the experience of particular social groups further exploration; for instance, single mothers and surrogates.

Women's Experiences of Postnatal Care in Czech Maternity Hospitals

This diploma thesis focuses on the issue of postnatal care in maternity hospitals in the Czech Republic as it is perceived by women who went through the medicalised obstetric birth in the past year. It examines in particular women's expectations concerning the care on the postnatal ward, their experiences of various aspects of care provided, the moments women highlight and the strategies they adopt in case of possible clashes of their own "non-expert" opinions with the regime of particular maternity hospital or "authoritative knowledge" of the staff. The aim of this thesis is to present the authentic experiences of postnatal care and to implant them into broader conceptual framework, especially considering the medical discourse and possible disciplinary techniques which are implemented to strengthen the authority of medical staff and to provide the opportunity for physical and social control of women.

"There are not many of us girls and that is a shame". Low number of female students at technical secondary schools

This diploma thesis is attentive to very low numbers of girls, studying at technically oriented secondary industrial schools. It examines the factors, which lead to the reasons why girls are not motivated to study at the schools of this kind, as well as factors which cause that they do enter these schools, such as their interest in studying technologies, their motivation in the form of their future professional application or the existence of patterns in the form of people who they imitate. In the theoretical part, which examines the causes of the absence of female students, the work criticises the claim that boys are more talented for studying technical disciplines, while girls excel in humanities. It points to ways of keeping gender stereotyped thinking, for example, a strongly rooted opinion, that little girls should be led to take care of children and other persons, housework, and professions which are an extension of their domestic roles into the public sphere. After this work identifies the risks and impacts of the absence of girls in technical fields, there are mentioned some procedures that should be introduced in the education of children in elementary schools, so that the children may not have to decide on their future field of study based on generally accepted gender stereotypes. Single parent from the perspective of single fathers

This thesis focuses on the topic of single-parent family, because this type of family, which are led only by one parent, is very relevant to our present social situation. In the context of current demographic trends related to the transformation of society in the perception of family and partner relationships, it can be assumed that their number will be continue to grow. Specifically this thesis is focused on single fathers, although many studies speaks of a certain percentage of single fathers in the Czech Republic, research on this topic has been carried out only a few times so far. For the most part, a woman is at the forefront of "incomplete" families. Single-parent family is perceived as a highly gendered experience, which is primarily related to women. The aim of this work was to find out what the experience of single parent looks like in the case of single fathers. This premise of this thesis is to explore what reasons have the fathers to choose to be single parents, what this type of commitment means for men, how they sign on their everyday life and especially how this type of primary care relates to the concept of hegemonic masculinity. Uterus transplantation as a path to motherhood

This thesis describes relatively new method of assisted reproduction. Uterus transplantation is viewed from feminist perspective, and its potential benefits and risks in wider ethical and social contexts on theoretical level are being considered. It reveals how womanhood and motherhood are constructed in different discourses in context of uterine transplantation through critical reading and thinking. By using of critical discourse analysis I focus on texts produced on this subject in the popular and professional discourse and reveal what kind of gender stereotypes and constructs they are using to support their arguments. These areas of our everyday lives have great power in society and influence the way we perceive and construct reality and thus participate in its creation. "Czech women want to be pretty everywhere too" Labiaplasty - imaginations of aesthetics and bodily ability of vagina

in English This thesis deals with the motives of women who have chosen to undergo labiaplasty and discusses the broader context of this newly growing aesthetic surgery. The main subject of the research is the discussion of the connection between the negative physical self-perception of women and the imaginations of the aesthetic normality of the female body. In this context it is also being investigated the influence of colonial racist ideology, power of the media and the construct of physical (dis)ability through the optics of disability studies. The role of medical authority and the influence of medical diagnosis are also explored in the research of the decision-making process. Methodologically, the work is based on qualitative research based on semi-structured interviews with women undergoing labiaplasty, supplemented by an interview with a plastic surgeon.
