Electrically powered plane conceptual design
Ševčík, Igor ; Sklenář, Filip (referee) ; Popela, Robert (advisor)
The master’s thesis deals with conceptual design of a new electrically powered aircraft as assignment for Evektor, s.r.o. company. In the first part of thesis there is more detailed elaboration of small aircraft statistics and their comparison. Thesis then concentrates on assigned parameters and requirements for design. Next section continues with the most important part of thesis, which is optimization of wing used for aircraft design and also analysis of its characteristics. The problematics of preliminary verification of flight performances as well as aircraft dimension design and follow-up weight analysis with consideration of power cells placement is described thereafter. A few different flight configurations is taken into consideration within weight analysis. Final part contains evaluation of optimization and design process.

Kaňák, Ondřej ; Daněk, Vladimír (referee) ; Popela, Robert (advisor)
This master’s thesis deals with the conceptual design of light surveillance aircraft. It involves modifying of VUT 001 Marabu according to the new requirements, which has been mainly brought by new definition of typical flight. Also there is solved design and geometry surfaces of new aircraft. It contains design and computation of stand for electro-optical monitoring device. Last but not least are calculated important flight performances.
Ultra lightweight structural design concept of a lunar habitat
Mazáč, Petr ; Popela, Robert (referee) ; Jebáček, Ivo (advisor)
This master’s thesis deals with ultra lightweight structural design concept of a lunar habitat. The beginning of the thesis is focused on basic properties of the Moon and different concept designs of lunar habitats and bases. Afterwards the main concept is introduced with defined loads followed by application of loads on the construction and design of main parts of the construction, especially design of an inflatable beam. Thesis is ended by manufacturing technology of an inflatable beam and design concept of main structural nodes.
Condition Simulation in Vehicle Aerodynamics Computation
Čavoj, Ondřej ; Sloupenský, Zdeněk (referee) ; Popela, Robert (referee) ; Píštěk, Václav (advisor)
Several types of discrepancies have been examined between CFD simulations, wind tunnel measurements and real world conditions. The results of different wheel rotation methods show that while stationary approaches can often substitute real unsteady wheel rotation, they can also be very sensitive to the exact angular positioning of wheel rims. Using both measured and computed flow fields, the lower part of wheel wake was identified as a key area, showing differences between rotation methods and sources of simulation errors in general. It was also shown that the level of detail in tyre geometry and its deformation near contact patch do not have a large impact on accuracy. Due to the absence of tyre rotation, the tyre sidewall was identified as an important place of flow separation with large effect on flow field and forces. Angle of attack study confirmed that assessing purely straight-line drag causes its under prediction compared to real-world values. This judgement would however benefit from obtaining data in more adverse conditions compared to those currently available. Finally, tyre radial expansion was investigated, causing a drop in drag with increasing vehicle velocity and altering the flow around the rear bodywork. Ignoring this effect can therefore negatively influence the aerodynamic development of a vehicle.
Aerodynamic analysis of the Aircar 5.0 flying car prototype
Jánošík, Tomáš ; Jebáček, Ivo (referee) ; Popela, Robert (advisor)
This thesis focuses on CFD analysis of the Aircar 5.0 flying car prototype. The theoretical part covers basic information about the connection between the aerodynamics of airplanes and cars as well as cars themselves. The computational part begins with the calibration of the mathematical model, continues with the CFD simulations, which have the role to determine basic aerodynamic characteristics of the Aircar in vehicle mode. There are several configurations tested to find out their influence on aerodynamic stability and their advantages and disadvantages are summed up in the conclusion chapter.
Design of aerodynamic wings of Formula Student / SAE
Fryšták, Lukáš ; Lajza, Ondřej (referee) ; Popela, Robert (advisor)
The objective of this thesis is design of aerodynamic wings for Formula Student/SAE car. Firstly, Formula Student is introduced and regulations concerning aerodynamic devices are discussed. Design of two-element inverted wing is described and this two dimensional airfoil section is analyzed in CFD. Forces acting on a moving vehicle are analyzed and effect of aerodynamic loads on vehicle dynamics is considered.
Noise reduction oriented optimization of UAV propellers
Ecler, Matěj ; Matějů, Jiří (referee) ; Popela, Robert (advisor)
This diploma thesis deals with optimization of propellers with the aim to reduce their noise level. Based on the measurement of noise level of serial propellers, major propeller noise sources were evaluated. Subsequent 2D simulations of the flow on the individual profiles along the propeller span revealed the locations of separation bubbles, which were identified as a potential source of the noise. Based on these findings, propellers were equipped with turbulator trips of various dimensions and their effect on the noise level and efficiency of the propellers was experimentally verified. The results did not show contribution of turbulator trips to noise reduction or efficiency.
Aerodynamic design of new generation of spoilers for formula SAE
Jánošík, Tomáš ; Matějů, Jiří (referee) ; Popela, Robert (advisor)
The main objective of this thesis is aerodynamic design of new generation of spoilers for Formula Student car. The first part deals with an insight into using of spoilers in Formula Student and aerodynamic analysis of previous TU Brno Racing cars. In the second part, the new rear wing section is designed and optimized using 2D CFD simulations.
