Bioaccumulation of microcystin-LR in fish tissues accompanied by effects at biochemical level
Adamovský, Ondřej ; Pašková, V. ; Bláha, Luděk ; Hilscherová, Klára ; Kopp, R. ; Babica, Pavel ; Maršálek, Blahoslav
Experimental evidence on microcystin bioaccumulation and modulation of biochemical parameters related to oxidative stress and detoxication in two fish species, silver carp and common carp, after two month-exposure to microcystin producing cyanobacterial bloom in outdoor breeding tanks.
Microcystins in drinking water in the Czech Republic
Babica, Pavel ; Bláha, Luděk ; Kohoutek, Jiří ; Adamovský, Ondřej ; Bláhová, Lucie ; Maršálek, Blahoslav
The paper summarizes results of microcystin analyses in drinking waters in the Czech Republic. Microcystins were detected in 36% of samples collected in 1999-2005 from 40 drinking water treatment plants. Microcystins were detected in 27% of samples of treated water and 9% of samples had concentrations of microcystins above 1 mug/L (i.e. higher than hygienic limit for microcystin-LR). The maximal detected concentration of microcystin in treated water reached up to 7.8 mug/L.

Babica, Pavel ; Bláha, Luděk ; Maršálek, Blahoslav
Information for customers: analyses of microcystins (in samples of water, cyanobacterial biomass, plants and animal tissues) in Laboratory of cyanotoxins (Centre for cyanobacteria and their toxins).
Practical experience of detection and removal of microcystins in drinking water treatment plants
Babica, Pavel ; Bláha, Luděk ; Maršálek, Blahoslav
Summary of practical experience of detection and removal of microcystins in drinking water treatment plants in the Czech republic in 1999-2005. The paper includes results of case studies of microcystin elimination in two different drinking water treatment plants.
Methods of microcystin analysis in different matrices: a review
Babica, Pavel ; Kohoutek, Jiří ; Bláha, Luděk ; Maršálek, Blahoslav
The literature review of analytical procedures and analytical methods (instrumental, immunochemical, biochemical) for detection of microcystins in different matrices (water, cyanobacterial biomass, plant and animal tissues).
Human health risks of cyanobacterial toxins /Microcystins/ in Brno Reservoir
Maršálek, Blahoslav ; Babica, P. ; Bláha, Luděk
Monitoring of cyanobacterial blooms showed, that significant health risks of both direct dermal contact as well as exposure to microcystins exist in recreation in Brno. During the summer season 2001, safety limits for dermal contact were exceeded at 93% of analysed localities. Our results iniciate that both monitoring and regelatory actions ase necessary.
Screening of the health risks of biofilms using a battery of in vitro toxicity assays
Bláha, Luděk ; Babica, P. ; Sabatier, S. ; Admiraal, W. ; Maršálek, Blahoslav
Traces of microcystin-lika compounds were detected by HPCL in biofilm samples from Netherlands. Half of the tested samples had no significant effect in any of the in vitro assays, other biofilms elicicted weak inhibitory/toxic effects mostly in high concentrations, which are not environmentally relevant. Most of observed weak effect seem to be associated with oxidative stress, an important toxicologicalĺmechanisms, as detected by depletion of intracellular antioxidantĺGHS by several biofilm samples. Potential adverse effects ofĺexterne polutants, which are known to accumulate in theĺperyphyton biomass should not underestimated. Mutagenicity andĺneurotoxicity of biofilm metabolits seems to be negligible. Weekĺadverse effects of biofilm extracts detected in a batery of inĺvitro assays indicate relatively low human health risksĺassociated with biofilm toxicity.
