Jean-Philippe Toussaint and New novel

This thesis deals with the question whether Jean-Philippe Toussaint's work resembles the work of the authors of the New novel, particularly Alain Robbe-Grillet. The thesis initiates with the topics covered by the New Novel: the main ideas and their realization and characteristics of the new writing style. This is followed by the analysis of a contemporary Belgian author, Jean-Philippe Toussaint. There is a short introduction of his life and character, his work and reasons why he is so popular and how he became a success. The main point of this part is the analysis of his writing style and its development from his early novels up to his present work. This thesis tries to look into the similarities and differences of J.-P. Toussaint's work and the work of the authors of the New novel. It mainly focuses on the use of objects, what role they play in Toussaint's novels, how they are described and the importance of their description for understanding the plot. The analysis begins with an introduction to the 1950s' new wave authors, later called the authors of the New novel, and their complaints aimed at the classical 19th century novel. Metamorphosis of the feminine body in the contemporary French literature

The present study focuses on the problematics of perception of the bodily image as it appears in a women-written corpus. The theme of the metamorphosing female body has been investigated in three contemporary French novels : Biographie de Za faim by Amélie Nothomb, Truismes by Marie Darrieussecq and Rosie Carpe by Marie NDiaye. All written by female authors around the same age, these novels report on what it is like being a woman in a postmodern world. The female heroes are confronted with their own bodily self and the long-standing tradition of a male-dominated society. These testimonies, that comprise traumatising bodily experiences and difficult relationships with others, contribute to forge the feminine identity. The three female protagonists of the investigated corpus embark on an identity quest. They struggle against the established order to find their place in the society. Nothomb's narrator thematizes the difficult passage from a child to an adult body which imposes the body /mind separation on women. She perceives this transformation as a traumatizing experience of loss and denies it by confining her body. In a revulsion towards the adult female body anorexia is an attempt to defeat abjection. French holocaust literature: testimonies on (not) experienced

The World War II represents a huge turning point in the modern history of humankind. Its particularity, which consists first of all in the system of concentration camps and the genocide of Jewish people, caused the creation of a new literary genre - the Holocaust literature. The objective of this thesis is to present this specific genre, its origins and evolution in France, as well as its most important French authors. The first part of the thesis tries to elucidate some of the particular aspects of this literature. It speaks not only about the influence of history and evolution of the postwar society on this genre or about questions that are closely associated with it, but also about the difficulty to define the holocaust literature itself. From a number of definitions that exist, we have chosen for the purposes of this thesis the one that includes all the texts on the concentration camps and the Holocaust (even the fictional ones) under the condition that they have an artistic, literary quality. The second part of the thesis presents an overview of the evolution of the French Holocaust literature and its writers. The noise of death: Raul Brandão's Humus and the problems of its translation into Slovak

Raul Brando's Humus is incontestably one of the most important works of fiction in Portuguese literature of the beginning of the twentieth century and it brings a number of innovations on the formal as well as on the ideological level. The specificity due to these innovations makes it a book the translation of which represents very particular difficulties. The paper, based on a philological analysis of the novel, identifies these difficulties and searches for usable solutions, bringing a translation of selected parts of the book into Slovak. It is divided into three parts. The first is a brief presentation of the author's work and places him in the context of portuguese and european literature. The second analyses Humus with regard to the aspects of the novel which are crucial for the understanding necessary as a base for a translation attempt. The third part exposes the general conception of the translation and its theorical bases not omitting the explanation of the choice of tha parts of the text to be translated. Expected specific problems of the translation are presented as well as suggestions of possible solutions to these. African tales in French literature

Tato práce se zabývá rolí afrických pohádek ve francouzské literatuře. Předmětem zkoumání jsou podmínky přenosu tradiční ústní literatury na francouzský knižní trh a význam afrických pohádek pro francouzské čtenáře. V prvních dvou částech práce je načrtnut přehled teorií zabývajících se původem pohádek. Poté je zkoumáno, jaký význam má ústní tradice pro africkou společnost a jaká je role vypravěčů-griotů. Následuje kapi - tola o morfologii, která se věnuje nejen vlastní struktuře pohádek a opakujícím se motivům, ale i klasifikaci jejich obsahu. Podrobněji je popsána skupina pohádek, ve kterých malé děti vystupují jako hlavní hrdinové. V další části práce je vylíčena si tuace na francouzském knižním trhu a je charakterizován typ produkce, na který se nakladatelé orientují. Poté je zmíněna role pohádky ve vztahu ke kulturní diverzitě. Je zjišťováno, co tato literatura přináší francouzskému publiku s francouzskými kořeny a co publ iku pocházejícímu z imigrantského prost ředí. Vzhledem k ústnímu charakteru pohádek se jedna z kapitol věnuje i charakteristice vypravěčů působících na francouzské kul turní scéně. St ručně je nastíněna historie vypravěčské profese a její proměny.

The unknown Simenon: Simenon as a journalist and the author of popular and psychological novels

Pro svoji diplomovou práci jsem si po konzultaci s katedrou Románských studií FF UK v Praze zvolila téma "Neznámý Simenon - Simenon jako novinář a autor lidových a psychologických románů." V České republice je tento autor pověstný zejména jako spisovatel detektivních románů. Je však méně známo, že ve svých počátcích působil i jako novinář, autor lidové literatury a zejména jako spisovatel psychologických románů. Cílem mé diplomové práce je seznámit s dosud neprozkoumanými oblastmi autorova díla a přispět k tomu, aby obecně vžité hodnocení osobnosti Georgese Simenona nebylo zúženo pouze na roli autora detektivních románů, ale aby byla autorova tvorba vnímána komplexně. Jsem si vědoma toho, že zvolená tematika je velmi široká, a proto se v rozsahu diplomové práce nemohu detailně věnovat všem částem autorova literárního díla. Hlavní část práce proto věnuji rozboru autorem i kritikou nejvíce ceněné tvorby- psychologickým románům - včetně analýzy jednotlivých charakteristických rysů žen, se kterými se v daných románech nejčastěji setkáváme. V úvodní části své práce shrnuji Simenonův život a dílo. Druhou a třetí kapitolu tvoří prezentace počátků jeho tvorby - období žurnalistiky a psaní lidových románů, tedy téměř neznámých oblastí autorova díla. Narrative strategies in Albert Camus novels

Existuje jistě mnoho způsobů, jak přistupovat k dílu Alberta Camuse, jednoho z nejuznávanějších francouzských spisovatelů 20. století. Řada prací byla věnována přínosu jeho díla filozofického, hojné jsou studie zabývající se tématikou a imaginativní složkou jeho díla románového, nemalé úsilí bylo vynaloženo i na kvanti tati vní analýzy Camusova "slovníku" ... 1 Každá z řádek jeho díla byla opsána a okomentována nesčetněkrát. Nabízí se otázka, má-li vůbec smysl přidávat touto diplomovou prací k tunám papíru, který byl popsán ve snaze osvětlit Camusovo dílo filozofické i literární řadou fundovaných literárních kritiků, lingvistů, filozofů, psychoanalytiků, sociologů, něj aké to deko navíc. Na obhaj obu tohoto počinu uveďme alespoň dva základní důvody, proč se nám zdá být naše diplomová práce opodstatněná. Prvním důvodem je skutečnost, že se v českém prostředí věnuje tomuto autorovi menší pozornost, než by zasluhoval. Jestliže v zahraničí, především pak ve francouzském a anglofonním prostředí, doprovází Camusovo dílo neutuchající zájem, mezi jehož projevy patří i rozsáhlá publikační činnost, v Čechách, zdá se, počet studií věnovaných tomuto autorovi přece jen zůstává pozadu. Three "Ulysses" in The 21th Century: Milan Kundera, Dany Laferrière, Michèle Rakotoson and Their Returns to Native Lands

This thesis discusses topic related to return to native land in three contemporary Francophonic novels. The study is founded on the paradigm described in Homer's Odyssey: mythological return of Odysseus to Ithaca is used as a base for analysis of a chosen piece of work which is Kundera's L'Ignorance, a novel of Malagasy writer Michèle Rakotoson Juillet au pays and L'Énigme du retour of Haitian novelist Dany Laferrière. The main aim of this thesis is to find out how the tradition of Homer's myth is reflected in mentioned stories of odyssey. Assia Djebar: hidden sight, silenced voice. The picture of female in women's intimate prose of Maghreb

Postavení žen v muslimské společnosti je v současné době velmi diskutovanou otázkou. V souvislosti s událostmi na Blízkém východě, a nejen tam, se stále více otevírá a přetřásá při nejrůznějších příležitostech. Běžnému příslušníku euroamerické kultury je problém vcelku jasný - muslimské ženy jsou utiskované, šikanované a ponižované. Stává se dokonce, že pozice žen v muslimských společnostech slouží jako prostředek k odsouzení islámu jako takového. Má práce by v žádném případě neměla mít sociologický charakter, není mou ambicí islám a postoj muslimů k ženám soudit, k tomu mi chybí vzdělání, zkušenosti i osobní znalost prostředí. Na prvopočátku mého bádání stála otázka: Může existovat literární autobiografie v kultuře, která zapovídá člověku zobrazovat, mluvit o sobě a používat 1. osobu singuláru? A v případě, že ano, pak tedy za jakých podmínek? Po přečtení několika knih se můj obzor částečně rozšířil a poznatky nabyté z této četby mě vedly k rozhodnutí omezit své zkoumání pouze na ženskou část literární tvorby Maghrebu. Maghrebská literatura psaná ženami je ve srovnání s evropskou produkcí velmi mladá, datuje se teprve od konce 40. let 20. století. S tím je spojen fakt, že je také velmi málo zpracovaná. The female character in the plays of Paul Claudel

Již od dětství se Paul Claudel záměrně přiklání na stranu své matky pocházející z Champagne. Citlivě vnímá a přijímá za svůj venkovský život spjatý s půdou a tradicemi, řídící se pravidelným během liturgického roku. V Paříži, kde studuje, prožívá Claudel své temné období plné hledání, zmatku a vzpoury proti jakékoliv autoritě. Postupně si utváří okruh umělců, u nichž nachází vzor a inspiraci. Vedle antických tragiků, Poea, Mal1armého, Wagnera, je to na prvním místě Rimbaud, kterého Claudel objevuje jen několik měsíců před svou konverzí. Hluboký náboženský zážitek, který mladý Claudel prožívá o vánocích 1986 v Notre-Dame, stojí na počátku jeho pronikání do neobyčejně významově i výrazově bohatého prostoru liturgie a Bible. Stává se celoživotní inspirací jeho dramatického, poetického i prozaického díla. V rámci tohoto postupného rozkrývání ho nad jiné upoutává mnohotvárná a přece vnitřně hluboce jednotná postava ženy v podobě božské Moudrosti, Panny Marie, lidské Duše a konečně Církve. Každá z ženských postav, které se objeví v Claudelově dramatu, v sobě nese tento čtverý obraz. Žádná jeho hrdinka není jen živou alegorií, je Moudrostí či Duší s celou šíří významu toho slova, v neustálém vnitřním spojení se všemi svými odkazy napříč prostorem i časem, zakotvená ve věčnosti díky absolutnímu rozměru, přítomnému...
