The Characters of Children at the Work of Adalbert Stifter

Petrusová, Kateřina (2011): The Characters of Children at the Work of Adalbert Stifter. Prague: Institute of Germanic Studies, Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague. This thesis deals with the role of children at the work of Adalbert Stifter, an Austrian author of the first half of the 19th century, born in Horni Plana (Oberplan) in Southern Bohemia. Adalbert Stifter was not just a writer and a painter but also a pedagogue (he worked as a supervisor of elementary schools for Upper Austria). All these activities, in association with his life experience and personal problems, were reflected in his literary work. I mainly focus on his three works: collections Studies (Studien), Colored Stones (Bunte Steine) and the novel (Bildungsroman) Indian Summer (Der Nachsommer). Childhood already appears in his early work, considered as a period of human development (Menschenwerdung). In Stifter's later stories, for example in his collection Bunte Steine, the characters of children are at the forefront: they are always confronted with the adult world and especially with the powerful laws of nature. This relationship is formulated in the foreword to this collection in the form of Stifter's gentle law (das sanfte Gesetz). Keywords: regional literature, legends, autobiographical prose literature, fiction, short stories, novellas, literary creation, aesthetics of nature Abstract: The subject of this thesis is a life and writing of the Gustav Leutelt, one of the lesser known German writing authors of Bohemia from the turn of the 20th century. Special attention is paid on describing the Jizera Mountains that play a pivotal role in his creation. The first chapter formulates the subject matter and establishes the goals of the thesis. The second chapter takes a brief look at the Leutelt's life and his writing. The third chapter covers introduction of specific works from three main areas of his art, which were fictional prose, legends and natural works. The final chapter summarizes the results and insights of the thesis.
The picture of the GDR in German prose after 1989

The work deals with pictures of GDR in German prose written after 1989 by authors coming from GDR and born after 1960. Literary pictures of GDR could be perceived as reflections of memories of individuals or as fictional images of this country. These pictures can't be compared with analyses researched by historians. The main aim is to show how these pictures create the collective memory of this state and how can the collective memory influences picture of GDR, that plays dominant role in today's German society. The case study compares nine literary texts and shows different aspects of reality of life in GDR. Humour and nostalgia were used as an important part of this picture. The comparison includes parallels and differences, in picturing this country, used by two last generations of authors in GDR.
Thomas Brussig and the literature of the time of change ("Wendezeit")

Cílem mé diplomové práce bylo charakterizovat dílo spisovatele Thomase Brussiga. Analyzovala jsem autorovu prózu vzniklou v rozmezí let 1989-1995, a to nejen v souvislosti s jeho životem, ale také v kontextu doby, v níž díla vznikla. Historické pozadí se jeví pro Brussigovu tvorbu jako zásadní a pochopení některých dobových souvislostí je základním předpokladem pro pochopení celého autorova díla. Doba je totiž nejen pozadím popisovaných příběhů - její kritika, ba dokonce pouhá charakteristika se stávají tématem Brussigových knih. Pro literární vědu je zajímavým příkladem zúčtování s kontroverzní spisovatelkou Christou Wolfovou, jejíž povídka Was bleibt1 vyvolala bouřlivé reakce osobností německé kulturní sféry. V románu Helden wie l-Fir 2 Brussig tuto autorku podrobuje zdrcující kritice, a to kritice sice ne vždy zcela přímé, ale přesto naprosto jednoznačné. Ve snaze o zachycení důvodů a okolností, které s touto kritikou souvisejí, jsem do své práce zařadila stručnou charakteristiku literárních a historických diskuzí, jež jsou důkazem neklidné atmosféry postsocialistického Německa, stejně jako Německa znovusjednoceného. The comparison of Grillparzer's and Horn's King Ottokar and the response of Czech cultural public to both plays

This dissertation commences with a short overview of German and Czech poetry, drama and fiction on the Bohemian King Přemysl Ottokar II. The second chapter discusses the times in which the tragedy König Ottokars Glück und Ende by Franz Grillparzer was written, and the circumstances of its creation - including information on censorship, critical reaction by Czechs in Vienna, Grillparzer's relation to the Bohemians as well as a description of his stays in Moravia and Prague. The third chapter is concerned with the life of Uffo Daniel Horn, particularly with his political engagement with the revolution of 1848 and with changes in his relation to the Czech nation before and after the revolution. The fourth chapter offers comparisons of Horn's two versions of König Otakar, and of Grillparzer's and Horn's plays - in the light of their construction, action, protagonists and their characteristics. The final chapter deals with the responses of the Czech cultural public, in chronological order.

Pfedkladana diplomova prace se zabyva basnickym dilem prazskeho rodaka Franze Baermm.ma Steinera (1909-1952). Za basnikova zivota zustalo dilo sirsi ctenarske verejnosti prakticky nezname; souborne vydani - Am stürzenden Pfad. Gesammelte Gedichte - uspohidal teprve v roce 2000 Jeremy Adler. Jeho edice vychazi z vydani sbirky Eroberungen, poHzeneho H. G. Adlerem (1964), a ze Steinerovy pozustalosti. Predkladana diplomova prace se opira 0 edici Jeremyho Adlera (Steiner 2000) a metodologicky navazuje na francouzskou skolu critique thematique, predevsim na studie Jean-Pierra Richarda. 1 Richard zkouma obrazivost (l 'imaginaire) jednotlivych autonl a pokousi se urcit jejich stezejni obrazovy fond, ktery zaklada charakteristicky svet konkretniho basnika. Zvolili jsme tuto metodu, nebot' Steiner sva temata prostredkuje pomod obrazu. Jeho obrazy nejsou nahodne a v basnickem dile se vraceji. Timto zpusobem nam basnik umoznuje pomerne presne stanovit vyznamjednotlirych obrazu a take vztahy mezi nimi. PHsne chronologickou analyzu jsme po urcitem vahani z nekolika duvodu zavrhli: basne za autorova zivota vetSinou nebyly zverejneny, a proto dilo nepodleha linearnimu ryvoji, jenz vyplyva z kontaktu dila s publikern. Dilo Thomase Manna plati za silne autobiograficke, konflikt otee a syna zde figuruje pomeme casto. ʻSudeten Germansʻ in Czech cinematography from 1945: changes and constants

The bachelor thesis investigates the background of possible presentations of Sudeten Germans in Czech cinematography and describes circumstances of a contemporary political and cultural climate in connection with the expulsion of Germans from Czechoslovakia after World War II. In four significant periods are analyzed five films - Nástup, Adelheid, Cukrová bouda, Zánik samoty Berhof, Habermannův mlýn. The analysis is based on secondary literature and contemporary critics.

This thesis analyses the restoration of ecclesiastical buildings in the area of the Lusatian Mountains after 1989. It describes the emergence of the term Sudetenland and the relationship between Czechs and Germans from the outset of coexistence to the expulsion after the World War II. The main attention is paid to the architecture and renovations of catholic churches, whose condition deteriorated in the communist era. Damaged and blasted churches are also mentioned. The information on financing is presented where available.
