Self-reflection of the Czech sport journalists working between 1980 and 1999 in printed media and the influence of ideology on their role in society

The thesis titled Self-reflection Of Czech Sport Journalists Working Between 1980 And 1999 In Printed Media And The Influence Of Ideology On Their Role In Society focuses on a question of whether the work of writing sport journalists was influenced by the ruling ideology before 1989. The thesis is based on biographical interviews of five sport journalists, which were taken while using the help of oral history research method. The sport journalists bring their testimonies, memories, experiences and stories associated with the period of normalization, the Velvet Revolution and the post-revolutionary period. The biggest emphasis is placed on a degree of impact of the ruling ideology on the editorial process before 1989. Therefore the thesis touches themes of self-censorship, targeted campaigns, relationships of the journalists to the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia or to The National Security. The work brings views of still writing sport journalists, who evaluate their motivation to do the profession, their ongoing journalistic career and the role of sport journalists in society. Critical responses of written and musical creation of Vratislav Brabenec

The Bachelor's Thesis "Critical Responses of the Written and Musical Work of Vratislav Brabenec " analyses samizdat collections, Czechoslovak and foreign periodicals as well as internet articles reacting to the life's work and personality of this musician, poet and a representative of the Czechoslovak underground. The thesis starts by forming a biographical and historical context and briefly introducing other protagonists of the underground. It then explains the underground and dissent as well as the difference between these two terms. The main body of the work is constituted by the compilation of the reception in the media of the writings, music and life of the artist. Furthermore, it captures the event of the 1976 trial that lead to the imprisonment of Vratislav Brabenec, both from the point of view of his contemporaries, who were keeping letters in samizdat form, and the representatives of the StB, who lead the case against the underground authors and wrote reports capturing the court proceedings. The author of this thesis then conducts research in both Czechoslovak and exile press and samizdat. Media responses of literary works with the prison theme by Jiri Stransky and Karel Pecka

The master diploma thesis "Media response of literary work with the prison theme by Jiri Stransky and Karel Pecka" maps the beletric works of Jiri Stransky and Karel Pecka which are influenced by their time in Communist prisons. The work deals with critical reviews of these literary works and it is based on contemporary reviews published in literary and other periodicals. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of reviews is included in a practical part of the master diploma. It is preceded by a theoretical part. In the theoretical part we shortly think about the importace of literary criticism but mostly important we clarify the conditions which led to the creation of Stransky's and Pecka's works. Thanks to the preserved documents from The National Archive and from The Archive of Security Forces we can now read about Stransky's and Pecka's arrest, interrogation and imprisonment in Communist prisons in the 1950s. Jiri Stransky was imprisoned in the years 1953-1960 and Karel Pecka between 1949 and 1959. The preserved documents outline also other repressions of Karel Pecka towards the State security, which occurred after his repase from prison in the sixties. Czechoslovakia in the years 1948-1989: How did the ruling party use the language of the formation of the "favorable" reality?

Submitted thesis deals with the question of how was the ruling party was using the language of "favorable" view of reality on the example of the introduction of monetary reform and the cancellation of the ticket system in the year1953. Using the critical discourse analysis of James Paul Gee it examines the twelve selected articles in the journals Rudé právo and Pravda in the period of one week before and two weeks after the introduction of monetary reform. The aim of this Bachelor thesis is to capture how did the Communist Party try to manipulate and influence the attitude of the citizens of Czechoslovakia to monetary reform through the media. The main contribution of this thesis should be a preview of functioning of the media in totalitarian Czechoslovakia and a display of the Communist regime's efforts to influence the media construct reality.
D-Day and Ve-Day in Czechoslovakian/Czech, British, American and Russian Newspapers

The dissertation D-Day and VE-Day in Czechoslovakian/Czech, British, American and Russian Newspapers deals with comparison and analysis of methods used by central newspapers published in Czechoslovak Socialist Republic/Czech Republic, Great Britain, USA and Soviet Union/Russian Federation in order to provide readers with information about D-Day in Normandy and Victory Day (VE-Day) in Europe. The articles published in selected periodicals Rudé právo/Právo, The Guardian, The New York Times and Izvestija are analysed from the 1980s to 2015. The first chapter focuses on description of historical background and circumstances which led to the Allied invasion to Normandy in June 1944 and subsequent liberation of Europe in May 1945. The end of the first chapter concentrates description of current situation connected to commemoration of these two anniversaries in 2014 and 2015. The aims and methods of the research as well as the development of the press in Czechoslovak Socialist Republic/Czech Republic, Great Britain, USA and Soviet Union/Russian Federation are characterised in the second chapter. This Master Thesis is called Media responses of Václav Havel's drama from sixties to present (The Garden party, The Memorandum, The Increased Difficulty of Concentration) and it deals with three previously named Vaclav Havel's dramas and their media responses in selected print media. Its aim is to analyse the critical review of these so called absurd dramas in contemporary scholarly and daily press. There will be three eras in which I will analyse the media responses: The Sixties, the era of world premieres of all three dramas in the Theater on the Balustrade in Prague and era of their spreading around the world, so called Normalization (era between Warsaw Pact invasion on 21st August 1968 and Velvet Revolution on 17th November 1989), in which Vaclav Havel was banned and his dramas were played exclusively abroad, and era after Velvet Revolution. Thesis contains also analysis of all three plays, brief Havel's dramatical biography and treatise on absurd drama.

Media responses to the novel Žítkovské bohyně of Katerina Tuckova

This thesis called The media reactions to Katerina Tuckova's novel Zitkovske bohyne outlines the life and work of novelist Katerina Tuckova and analyses responses to her third novel. It deals with professional reviews as well as reader's reactions on servers and social networks. It also maps the work of Jiri Jilik who's topic is very similar and explores reactions to his publication Zitkovske carovani: The true story of zitkovske bohyne. We focus on the content similarities and relationship between those two pieces of work, also on the methods of work that the authors used. The thesis also analyses the circumstances of a dispute between Katerina Tuckova and Jiri Jilik and also between Katerina Tuckova and some inhabitants of Moravske Kopanice. We mostly think about the relationship between fictional and fact level of a historic novel. In the thesis not only we use the books of both authors but also interviews with Katerina Tuckova and articles from periodicals. The reviews are mostly from periodics Host, Tvar, Lidove noviny and MF Dnes. We also use interner servers dealing with this topic. In the theoretical part we derive from works od Jonathan Culler, Lubomir Dolezal, Pavel Janousek etc. The interview with Katerina Tuckova is attached.¨
1968 Prague Spring in Karlovy Vary through the prism of the regional newspaper Stráž míru

This bachelor thesis deals with period of Prague Spring from the standpoint of the periodical of Karlovy Vary Stráž míru. It presents a brief historical perspective on the events and the media situation in Czechoslovakia. In the first chapter there are social and international events which preceeded the Prague Spring. Attention is focused on events after the rise of Alexandr Dubček to the head of Communist Party, Akční program of Communist party and the activity of reformists. The second chapter deals with the media situation in Czechoslovakia. There are described large changes in the media sphere during the Prague Spring, especially the revocation of censorship and the development of all types of media. This chapter includes the description of legislation and international meetings, which have affected the situation in the country. At the end of the theoretical part, there is a brief description of the weekly Stráž míru. Stráž míru was a regional periodical in the district of Karlovy Vary. The third chapter has an analytical nature as individual articles are analytically discussed. The analysis of articles provides a view of events in the Karlovy Vary and puts them into the context of societal issues.
