Combs in the Middle Age: archaeological-cultural-historical study

(in English) Combs are used as toilet objects for adjustment of hair and beard, or as a decoration of hairstyle all over the world. Combs have also a number of symbolical and magical significances. The aim of this work is a comprehensive view on combs as a one part of medieval material culture. The first part deals with the manufacture of medieval combs, particularly materials used for comb making, manufacturing processes, decoration, the degree of specialization of bone and antler objects manufacturing and manufactures in which bone and antler objects were produced. The second part is applied to the function of combs, evolution of hairstyles in the Middle Ages, symbolical significance and the associated magical significances of human hair and beard and different rituals connected with their cutting and combing. The core of this thesis is analysis, synthesis and interpretation of selected finds of medieval combs from what now is the territory of the Czech Republic. The aim of the analysis, synthesis and interpretation is the comparison of morphology and decoration of combs from different periods of Middle Ages. Chapters, which are devoted to chronology, morphology and typology of medieval combs and social-representational aspects of using combs are largery based on this part.
The Chronology of luxurious women's jewellery in the Early Medieval period and its historical significance

The Chronology of the luxurious women's jewellery in the Early Mediaeval period and its historical significance. This PhD thesis deals with the dating of women's luxurious jewellery in the area of South Moravia in Early Mediaeval period. The aim of the thesis is ordering of women's jewellery sets into relative chronological sequence. The impetus for the analysis of jewellery was the recognition of some discrepancies in the relative chronology of the cemetery at Staré Město "Na valách", which was the basis of relative chronology of 9th century material culture in previous decades. After the division of women's jewellery assemblages into three relative-chronological phases, the author tries to define these phases in the terms of absolute chronology. New insights into the dating of the woman jewellery open the question of its origin and new views on its historical interpretation and significance. Medieval building offerings from the archaeological perspective

This bachelor thesis deals with intentional deposits, a material evidence of customs connected with the foundation and construction of medieval buildings. The general principles of building offering recognition in the archaeological contexts were formulated on the basis of archaeological, written and ethnographical sources. Difficulties with their interpretation and terminology were discussed pursuant to the current discourse in European archaeology. Individual archaeological findings in the area of today's Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia from 6th to 16th century are presented and evaluated. Their list is also contained in the catalogue, which is put to this thesis. Great Moravian burial grounds in Rajhrad and Rajhradice

The diploma thesis presented deals with an overall assessment of the Great Moravian burial ground in Rajhrad (Brno- venkov), which was excavated in the years 1972 to 1976. The work is based on a catalogue of this burial ground and the neighbouring one in Rajhradice published by Čeněk Staňa. It follows individual aspects of funeral rites at a necropolis and evaluates the inventory of the graves. Based on the findings, the work dates the burial ground, compares with burial ground in Rajhradice and puts they into context of all Great Moravian burial grounds. Avarian decorative motifs in Avar Khaganat Period and their transformation in Great Moravian epoch.

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to systematically catalogue main avar decorative motifs, record their development during Great Moravian period and sketch their ties to near-eastern and mediterrean cultures. The basis of this work lies in a catalogue of 10 avar cemeteries, subsequently on the basis of their fund are figured out main categories and subtypes of decorative motifs on avar artifacts. These motifs are in the next part described in detail and compared with parallels belonging to the Great Moravian cultural background. Finally we will focus on symbolism of chosen motifs, try to interpret them and also suggest where the debated motifs originated from. Abstract: This Bachelors thesis is dedicated to a comparison of three early medieval settlements Roztoky near Prague, Groβ Strömkendorf and Raškov (Raškov I, Raškov II and III). All these localities are from several areas which were occupied by the Slavs. Such an ethnical interpretation is meeting with several difficulties. Those are covered within the thesis. One of the main problems is identification of archaeological culture with certain ethnical group. The sites are dated between half of the 5th century and the beginning of the 9th century. The main interest is given to semi-sunken huts, which prevail on all mentioned sites. The thesis contains their close analysis which compares their basic parameters as theirs shape and size, orientation, placement and heating system type); it also includes possible constructions of houses walls and roofs. The aim of the study is to provide analyses from selected features on hill fort Klučov and thein charakteristics. In the second part the aim is to Compaq with pottery from other hill forts in Pošembeří. The third part attempts to propose a historical interpretation of hill forts location patterns on other Bohemian parts.
