How to think Architecture in a new way. Late though of Peter Eisenman and his critical theory of architecture
Tourek, Jiří ; Říha, Cyril (advisor) ; Pětová, Marie (referee) ; Zervan, Marian (referee)
Dissertation thesis "How to think Architecture in a new way. Late though of Peter Eisenman and his critical theory of architecture" tries to summarise and analyse the key thoughts of architect and thinker Peter Eisenman in his late oeuvre. The point of departure of his theoretical thinking seems to be refusal of any timeless essence of architecture and a will to "dislocate" architecture from influence of metaphysics. The way to this is "criticality", a notion constituted with three basic terms: interiority (the interiority of architecture defines the discipline, what it is that makes architecture singular), exteriority (external concepts that change architecture by being internalised into the discipline and changing it) and anteriority (anteriority is the sedimented history of architecture; history of interiority). These three terms are according to Eisenman connected in a notion of "undecidability" that serves as a central criterium to criticality and in a "diagram" that is a mean to overcome metaphysical implications of architecture. At the end of the thesis there is a summary of Eisenman's theoretical work and its importance and an attempt is made to set so conceived whole in its entirety to the thought of "end of metaphysics". In this context is Eisenman seen to be in a position similar from...
At home at the large housing estate? Local identity and place identification in different types of urban environment
Veselý, Martin ; Haluzík, Radovan (advisor) ; Pětová, Marie (referee) ; Vašát, Petr (referee)
Martin Veselý At home at the large housing estate? Local identity and place identification in different types of urban environment The thesis is concerned with the question of local identity and place identification in urban environment on the example of Prague's Southern Town representing a large, centrally planned housing estate, and "old" Vršovice as an example of a traditional city quarter. The author distinguishes two theoretical-methodological approaches to the analysis of urban environment. The first approach is ontological-historical, ethic perspective describing the city with the use of theoretical devices of urbanism and phenomenology of architecture. The second approach - anthropological - is an emic approach studying the interpretation of a place by social agents. The author shows on numerous examples, how do the people identify with a place and what is the role of the physical attributes of the place and its memory in the process of place identification. The relation between ontological-historical and anthropological perspective is according to the author dialogic and he is looking for points of intersection. He shows that the consequence of one-sided way of interpretation is insufficient understanding for place identity. In other words, it is not able to answer convincingly the...
At home at a large housing estate? Local identity and place identification at the Souther town in Prague

At home at a large housing estate? Local identity and place identification at the Southern Town in Prague The aim of this thesis is to examine hitherto neglected question of the place identification of the inhabitants of large prefabbed housing estates on the example of Southern Town in Prague. What is the relation of the participants to their housing estate like? Which inductively defined factors play an important role in the process of identification of the residents of Southern Town with their home quarter? How is this relation influenced with the fact that the Southern Town is a monotonous physical environment, where the historical continuity was furthermore radically disrupted? What is the relation between the residential satisfaction of the participants and their emotional place identification? I examine the ways and factors of place identification of the inhabitants of the Southern Town by way of two complementary methods: by participant observation of the activities of engaged locals, who spontaneously articulated their relation to the Southern Town during the protests against controversial building projects, and by the semi-structured interviews with the long-time residents of two generations - people born there in 1980's and the generation of their parents. I expose the factors which strengthen or...
Konstanz. Image of The City
Mlynarcikova, Dana ; Altová, Blanka (advisor) ; Pětová, Marie (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the study of the City's Image. The main objective is to present an Image of the city of Konstanz in Germany. The realization was carried out with methods using mental maps (Kevin Lynch), and Panofsky's iconology, which is a method of interpretation that reveals cultural, social, and historical background of city as a visual artwork. The structure of thesis is divided into three chapters Spaziertour - Führertour - Kunsthistorischetour, corresponding to Panofsky's three levels of technique: look - see - think. The main source for me was a visual of the city, my own perception of it, and visual materials displaying the city (pictures of the map, vedutas, photos, viewcards) and places of memory (Pierre Nora). Through the interaction with the surroundings of the city mixed with my subjective feelings. I tried to show the image of this city from a new personal perspective. KEY WORDS Image of the city, mental map, iconology, places of memory, tour
Human being and a movement: Status of the movements of human existence in the thinking of Jan Patočka
Nováková, Alžběta ; Marek, Jakub (advisor) ; Pětová, Marie (referee)
The work is focused on the evolution of Patočka's conception of movements of the human existence throughout his thoughts. My aim is to show sources of this conception, its explicite expressions and their structure and finally the meaning of this conception for the human life and its status in Patočka's whole-life philosophical project, all this by the analysis of three metodologically defined periods of Patočka's work. The inevitable past of this kind of rethinking of Patočka's conception is dealing with the question of succesion of his two great teachers, Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger, and showing, that his conception of movements of the human existence can't be explained simply from the polarity of uncritical bulilding on them, neither the complete refusing them. Also I would like to show the conceptional kinship with other thinkers of western philosophical tradition, whose selection is selective, but in my opinion meaningful. I also hope, that this rethinking of the conception of movements of the human existance will show the place, which belongs to Patočka's thougt in the western philosophical tradition and, first of all, it's meaning for human life. Key words Phenomenology, movement, existence, philosophy of history, authenticity

The evolution of conception of truth from the presocratics to Plato and its meaning in the history from the perspective of Martin Heidegger
Štěrba, Vojtěch ; Pětová, Marie (advisor) ; Benyovszky, Ladislav (referee)
The thesis is based on Heidegger's conception of truth that was forming in his thinking from the beginning of the thirties of 20th Century. We follow the change of the conception of truth in history from Heidegger's perspective, namely on Anaximandros, Parmenides and Plato. We look upon this subject through chosen Heidegger's texts concerning presocratics and truth, along with Plato's dialog Parmenides and an anonymous commentary to it from an unknown author from the late antiquity. For Heidegger the way of Being of a man is changing in history, based on the transformation of mans relation to Being. The relation is linked with a transformation of the conception of truth. The way how we uncover the beings in the world and what does the being mean to us is connected to that too. That is why we can say that in the way how we understand the truth is equally shown how we understand ourselves and the world. We are therefore looking on the conception of truth through Heidegger's concept of history, which is according to him rooted in the transformation of one's relation to Being itself. That affects not only how and from what a man understands himself in the world (and therefore affects the transformation of the conception of truth throughout history), but also whether and how a man asks about the Being...
