Depiction of barbarians in early Chinese sources (Western Zhou - Western Han dynasty)

The present paper discusses the evolution of the chinese perception on the surrounding nations during the period of formative process of the chinese civilization, namely from Western Zhou dynasty (c. 1045 - 771 B.C.) to Western Han dynasty, which lead this process to its end. The core of the paper describes the depiction of the barbarians in particular period and texts of the chinese ancient era, stresses the changes of this depiction in the course of time and also follows the factors, which could have influenced this perception. A very important part of the paper is a characteristics of the cultural stereotypes, which can be observed in the depiction of barbarians and which seemed relevant to Chinese for description of barbarian's differences.

The Chams: language and cultural implications

This work deals with the lingual and resulting cultural problems of the Cham minority ethnic living in central and southern Vietnam. Between the 2nd and 15th centuries, the Cham people had created their own hinduized state with an original culture in this area. We consider the Cham language the crucial problem for finding the identity and the integration of this ethnic into the contemporary multiethnic society in Vietnam, as well as in greater scope, in the whole region of South-East Asia. The work is divided into two basic parts: the first part considers the characteristics of the Cham language, where our attention is focused especially on the Cham dialects and typological classification. The second part addresses the contemporary position of the Cham language in Vietnam, the official and true approach to these problems, the bilingual Cham names and the Cham literary traditions. The interest in Cham language dates from about mid-19th century. After being first described by John Crawfurd, it has been the concern of the French linguists from EFEO for a long time. On account of these stated investigations, we mention in this work the genealogical classification of the Cham language. We had paid great attention to the Cham dialects, especially in relation to religious problems. ...

The White Lotus teachings

Učení bílého lotosu, hnutí bílého lotosu, tradice bílého lotosu ... Nejčastěji vyvolají tyto pojmy představu náboženských skupin1 vycházejících z buddhistické tradice čisté země a připravených ve jménu příchodu budoucího buddhy Maitréji vyvolat povstání. Z obecných děl a encyklopedií2 se většinou dozvídáme, že učení bílého lotosu (bailianjiao) bylo založeno ve 12. století mnichem Mao Ziyuanem v rámci buddhistické tradice čisté země. Stoupenci této tradice se snažili dodržováním pravidel správného života a opakováním jména buddhy Amitáhby dosáhnout znovuzrození v Amitábhově čisté zemi. K této základní doktríně se pak v průběhu dějin přidávaly další myšlenky a učení, jako třeba taoistická stvořitelská mytologie, lidový taoismus, mileniaristické učení buddhy Maitréji a manicheismus.3 Stoupenci hnutí vytvářeli širokou, decentralizovanou síť se základnami v místních komunitách. Díky eschatologickému učení bylo možné mobilizovat masy následovníků proti existujícímu státnímu systému. Tato schopnost hnutí bílého lotosu se projevuje v četných povstáních, kdy jako první velké bývá uváděno povstání Rudých turbanů na konci vlády dynastie Yuan. The relations of Japan and Indochina in the early 20th century

K napsání této práce mě přivedl můj zájem o Japonsko a Vietnam. Začátek 20. století jsem si zvolila proto, že je to období mnoha změn nejen v Japonsku a Vietnamu, ale ve světě jako takovém. Studie zabývající se tímto období ve východní Asií se obvykle soustředí na vývoj vztahů západních velmocí s Japonskem a Čínou, na postoj Japonska ke Koreji a Číně apod. Avšak vztahy Japonska a Francie, která ovládala tehdejší Vietnam v rámci Francouzské Indočíny, jsou dosti opomíjeny. Domnívám se, že je to proto, že pozornost japonské vlády byla v té době zaměřena více na sever - na Koreu a Mandžusko, kde Francie neměla žádné ambice. V otázce Koreje a Číny se naopak střetávaly zájmy Ruska a Japonska. V jižní oblasti Japonsko sice mělo záchytný bod - Tchaj-wan, avšak zatím zde vůbec nepomýšlelo na další postup. To by mohlo vyvolat dojem, že vztahy mezi Japonskem a Indočínou v tomto období byly nevýznamné nebo nevyhraněné. Studiu japonsko-indočínských, respektive japonsko-vietnamských vztahů v tomto období se věnují především vědci z těchto obou zemí, avšak jejich bádání se často soustředí kolem osoby vietnamského vlastence Phan Boi Chaua [Fan Boi Ťau] a hnutí Dong Du [Dong Zu] (Cesta na východ), které organizoval v letech 1905- 1909 a jež spočívalo v tajném vysílání vietnamských mladíků do Japonska a zajištění jejich...

Aliud etiam referam de magno cane quod vidi. Odoric of Pordenone and his encounter(s) with the Great Khan

From major part of Latin manuscripts of the travel report of Odoric of Pordenone we learn that he was personally present at an encounter of the Franciscan friars with the Great Khan. In the text known as De reverentia magni Chanis is described the esteem, which allegedly Yesün Temür Khan (reigned 1323–1328) showed to the Christian faith represented by the cross. The event said to occurred during the Great Khan’s journey from Khanbaliq to his Summer Palace in Shangdu. Only a very small part of the Latin manuscripts, which arose in the central-southern Germany (recensio Germanica) in the second half of the 14th century, contain the passage, commonly known as De prædicatione magno Chani. It records, as the only source in Latin, Odoric’s predication before the Khutughtu Khan (Qošila, Küsele, reigned 1328–1329).

Evidence of Chinese Flags in the Light of Ancient Texts

The evidence of the fact that in China some kinds of flags or banners have been in use since the earliest history of the state can be documented from the earliest inscriptions on the oracle bones and bronzes (between 14th and 5th centuries BC). But the earliest use of banners in China refers to the mythological times, as recorded in the classical books. According these texts already the Yellow Emperor (Huang Di), a mythical ancestor of the Chinese nation, has used some kind of a banner. It was ornamented with four kinds of diurnal birds of prey or raptors: a mythical bird he (a kind of falcon), an eagle, a kite (hawk or glede) and a falcon. Also standards of some mythical tribes are mentioned in Chinese classics.
