Otázka, zda by Evropská unie měla vytvořit svůj vlastní ekvivalent k Federálnímu úřadu pro vyšetřování, je diskutována ve společnosti již několik let. Po dalším nárůstu přeshraniční trestné činnosti (především terorismu) na počátku nového tisíciletí polemiky na toto téma v Evropě ještě více zesílily. Za takovéto situace se pozornost začala upínat téměř bezvýhradně na Evropský policejní úřad, agenturu EU založenou 1999 a všeobecně známou jako Europol. The question whether EU should create its own parallel to the American FBI has been circulating in the society for several years. Similar discussions have strengthen even more after a new increase in global terrorism on the beginning of the new millennium. In this situation public started to focus almost exclusively on the European Police Office, an EU's agency founded in 1999 and commonly known as Europol.
