Probiotics are defined as live cultures of micro-organisms administered orally and acting beneficially on host health. They inf1uence favourably both development and stability of the microf1ora, inhibit colonization by pathogens, inf1uence the mucosal barrier by their trophic effect on intestinal epithelium and stimulate both specific and non-specific components of the immune system, moreover, they may well replace antibiotics whose resistance is steadily increasing (Kalliomaki et a/. 2003). After a genetic manipulation, the commensal and probiotic strains could be used as vectors for clinica\Jy important molecules and for their preventive and therapeutic mucosal application (Seegers et a/. 2002). Orally administered probiotic bacteria are expected to survive the passage through stomach and colonize intestinal mucosal surfaces even if it were only for a short period. In addition to bacterial strains Lactobacillus and Bifidobacter, also some non-pathogenic strains of Escherichia coli (E.coli) proved suitable for this purpose. It was shown that colonization of new-boms with a non-pathogenic strain of E. coti 083 stimulated local and systemic humoural and cellular immune responses and reduced the number of pathogens (Cukrowska et al. 2002; Lodinová-Žádníková et a/.1991).
