Ftaláty (estery kyseliny ftalové) jsou vysoce produkovány ve většině oblastech průmyslových odvětvích světa právě z důvodu jejich dobrých fyzikálně-chemických vlastností. Uplatňují se jako změkčovadla, tj. látky zlepšující mechanické vlastnosti polymerů. Výsledný produkt může obsahovat 10 % až 60 % změkčovadla, které není v polymeru pevně vázáno kovalentní vazbou, a může tedy docházet k jeho uvolňování do materiálu, se kterým je plast v kontaktu. Z těchto druhů polymerů je dnes vyráběna celá řada různých výrobků, které najdeme běžně v domácnosti nebo i ve zdravotnictví. Podezření na karcinogenitu u di-2-ethylhexyl ftalátu bylo zaznamenáno teprve v 80. letech minulého století. O několik let později bylo zjištěno, že některé další estery např. benzylbutyl ftalát, dibutyl ftalát mohou negativně ovlivnit mužský reprodukční systém. Phthalates (phthalatic acid esters) are highly produced in most areas world’s industry due to their good physico-chemical properties. They are used as plasticizers, substances improving mechanical properties of polymers. The final product may contain 10 % to 60 % of a plasticizer which is not firmly covalently bound in the polymer and this may be released into the material with which the plastic is in contact. Todays are produced from these types of polymers a wide range of different products which we can normally find in the household or in healthcare. Suspicion of carcinogenicity of di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate was not recorded until the 1980s. A few years later was founded that some other esters (benzylbutyl-phthalate, dibutyl-phthalate) may convenience male reproductive system negatively.
