This thesis is an investigation of the extraneous forces that drive gay love in the poetry of Richard Siken, Ocean Vuong, and Jericho Brown toward death. The death drive, as originally formulated by philosopher Sigmund Freud and repurposed by queer theorist Lee Edelman, is a major contributor to the heteronormative pursuit of rendering the constructive forces of love within the context of gay relationships destructive. The aim of this thesis is to prove that the theme gay love in the selected poetry may be restricted by the death drive but that these restrictions work to criticize the oppressive social order. The life drive can be reclaimed eventually and gay love can become constructive even with the confrontation of traumatic history. The thesis begins with the omnidirectional death drives of Richard Siken's Crush that barely offers gay love respite from death and ruin. The inward death drive affects the speaker in Crush negatively and plants thoughts of deserving death for being gay. The inward death drive then gets turned outward with as an aggressive reaction to any gay relationship that the speaker encounters.
