Veletržní a výstavní areály, které tvoří nedílnou součást řady evropských měst, představují unikátní typ městského prostoru, jehož dnešní podoba se konstituovala na základě dlouhého historického vývoje. Přesto tento svébytný typ městského prostoru dosud není předmětem systematického urbanistického výzkumu a související obory se zabývají pouze dílčími aspekty tématu. Chybí jednotící teoretický rámec, který by umožnil urbánní kvality veletržních a výstavních areálů komplexně popsat a pojmenovat jejich potenciál při tvorbě města. K fragmentaci poznání dále přispívá geografický faktor, především rozptýlení těchto areálů v rámci jednotlivých regionů a států Evropy a s tím související jazykové bariéry vyvstávající při jejich zkoumání. Práce shromažďuje informace o historické I dnešní podobě evropských veletržních a výstavních areálů a popisuje detailně různé typy transformačních procesů, jimiž tyto areály procházely v minulosti a které je utvářejí v současnosti. Při analýze charakteristik areálů a popisu transformačních procesů využívá autorka vlastní FFF teorii, na základě které sleduje rovnováhu formálních, funkčních a finančních aspektů s cílem vyvodit z podrobného zmapování zkoumaného fenoménu závěry platné pro aktuální situaci v České republice. Základní sumarizace poznání je nutným předpokladem k pochopení podstaty fungování těchto areálů ve městech a současně předpokladem lepší ochrany jejich kulturně-historické hodnoty při budoucích transformacích území. Slouží rovněž k predikci možných scénářů budoucího vývoje veletržních a výstavních areálů a k objasnění jejich potenciálu pro rozvoj městského území. Exhibition centres represent a specific type of urban space within the present-day European cities and their current form results from a long development in the past. While exhibition venues are the subject of study from multiple points of view (e.g. economics, urban policy, leisure studies) their spatial quality and urban characteristics stay somewhat aside and a theoretical frame for their all-encompassing description and assessment of their possible impact on the urban development of cities is missing. Comparison of exhibition centres from various European regions and countries is further complicated by the existence of language barriers which have an impact on the accessibility of relevant and comparable data. The thesis submits information about the previous and current form of European exhibition centres and the processes that shaped their form are described in detail. The FFF theory proposed by the author herself is employed to analyse the relation between form, function and financial subjects with the aim to arrive at conclusions which could be applied within the current conditions in the Czech Republic. Summarized knowledge about European exhibition centres and venues helps to understand the role they play within the cities and the necessity to protect their historical value upon future transformations. It is also needed to predict their possible further development and unfold their urban potential.
