Ženská homosexualita je komplexním fenoménem, a proto příčiny vzniku ženské homosexuality jsou tématem rozsáhlých debat. Existuje celá řada teorii vzniku ženské homosexuality a jednou z nich je neurohormonální teorie. Neurohormonální teorie předpokládá, že organizační účinky prenatálních hormonů v raných stádiích vývoje ovlivňují sexuální orientaci. Kongenitální adrenální hyperplazie (CAH) je onemocnění, při kterém postižené ženy jsou vystaveny vysokým hladinám prenatálních hormonů. U žen s CAH pozorována vyšší frekvence homosexuální a bisexuální orientace než u běžné populace. To lze vysvětlit účinky prenatálních hormonů. Ale většina žen s CAH jsou stále heterosexuální a existuje i obrovské množství lesbických a bisexuálních žen, které žádnou poruchu nemají. To také naznačuje, že hormony určitě nejsou jediným faktorem přispívajícím ke vzniku homosexuální orientace. Female homosexuality is a complex phenomenon, and therefore, the causes of the emergence of female homosexuality are the subject of extensive debates. There are various theories about the origin of female homosexuality, and one of them is the neurohormonal theory. The neurohormonal theory assumes that the organizational effects of prenatal hormones in the early stages of development influence sexual orientation. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is a condition in which affected women are exposed to high levels of prenatal hormones. In women with CAH, a higher frequency of homosexual and bisexual orientation is observed compared to the general population. The effects of prenatal hormones can explain this. However, most women with CAH are still heterosexual, and there is also a significant number of lesbian and bisexual women who do not have any disorder. This also suggests that hormones are certainly not the sole factor contributing to the development of homosexual orientation.
