Žánr vojenských příruček, který lze zařadit do naučné literatury, vznikal již od starověku. Svébytná etapa jeho vývoje následovala po vynálezu knihtisku, kdy se nové tituly začaly šířit pomocí pohyblivých liter ve větším počtu kopií. Knihy, jejichž autory byli většinou zkušení vojáci, vznikaly obvykle proto, aby se na jejich stranách seznamovali (budoucí) důstojníci s náležitostmi moderního válečnictví. Svazky, které byly mnohdy typograficky propracované a doplněné o množství naukových ilustrací, však mohly sloužit též jako prostředek sebeprezentace jejich majitelů. Ve střední Evropě začalo množství vojenských příruček znatelně stoupat po roce 1550, a to především díky produkci německých tiskáren. Tato práce sleduje středoevropské proměny tohoto žánru od poloviny 16. až do poloviny 17. století, tedy do doby krátce po skončení třicetileté války. Předložený výzkum se hlásí k tzv. kulturním dějinám vojenství a hnutí New Military History, mezi jehož charakteristiky patří ambice aplikovat při bádání na vojenskou problematiku metody obvyklé při výzkumu témat z oblasti nemilitárních dějin a pohlížet na vojenské dějiny optikou pramenů, které byly dosud vytěženy málo, nebo vůbec. Mezi výzkumné metody patřila především retrospektivní bibliografie, ale též další kvantitativní i kvalitativní metody jako... The genre of military handbooks, classified as educational literature, has its roots in antiquity. A significant phase of its evolution came with the advent of the printing press, allowing the propagation of such titles via movable types in increasingly large quantities. Authored by experienced soldiers, these books primarily aimed to educate (prospective) officers on the fundamentals of modern warfare. Simultaneously, these often typographically elaborate volumes - supplemented with numerous educational illustrations - could represent a means for their owners to project self-image. In Central Europe, the proliferation of military handbooks began to surge noticeably after 1550, mainly driven by German printing production. This thesis explores the Central European transformation of this genre from the mid-16th to the mid-17th century, that is, until shortly after the end of the Thirty Years' War. The research approach aligns with the cultural history of warfare and the New Military History movement. This school of thought strive to apply methods common in non-military historical research to military issues, and explore military history through underutilized or unexplored sources.
