Nachhaltige regionale Entwicklung ist ein sehr komplexes Konzept. Eine einheitliche Definition ist nicht möglich, obwohl die nachhaltige Entwicklung die Grundlage für die Ausarbeitung aller Politiken ist. Auch in der EU ist die nachhaltige Entwicklung die Grundlage ihrer Regionalpolitik. Grundsätzlich haben die Regionen eine große Bedeutung, um die Herausforderungen der modernen Zeit zu meistern. Aus diesem Grund war das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit herauszufinden, wie Interreg-Projekte als Teil der europäischen Regionalpolitik, zu einer nachhaltigen regionalen Entwicklung beitragen. Zu diesem Zweck wurde die Region Oberrhein betrachtet und vier leitfadengestüzte Experteninterviews mit ehemaligen und aktuellen Projektleitern von Interreg-Projekten durchgeführt. Zusammenfassend kann gesagt werden,dass nachhaltige regionale Entwicklung von den Befragten je nach Kontext unterschiedlich definiert wird. Eine Tendenz lässt sich jedoch bei den spezifischen Interreg-Projekten erkennen. Die langfristige Wirkung der Projektergebnisse und damit die langfristige Steigerung der Lebensqualität innerhalb eines grenzüberschreitenden Einfluss- oder Wirkungsraums wird hier als nachhaltige regionale Entwicklung definiert. Interreg-Projekte haben einen erheblichen Anteil an dieser Entwicklung. Sustainable regional development is a highly complex concept. A uniform definition has not been possible until today, although sustainable development is the basis for the elaboration of all policies. In the EU, too, sustainable development is the basis of its regional policy. Basically, the regions have a great importance to master the challenges of the modern times. For this reason, the aim of the present work was to find out how Interreg projects, as part of the European regional policy, contribute to sustainable regional development. For this purpose, the Upper Rhine region was considered and four qualitative semi-structured expert interviews were conducted with former and current project managers of Interreg projects. In summary, it can be said that sustainable regional development is defined differently by the interviewees depending on the context. However, one tendency can be identified in the specific Interreg projects. The long-term impact of project results and thus the long-term increase of the quality of life within a cross-border area of influence or area of impact is understood here as sustainable regional development. Interreg projects have a considerable share in this development.
