Abstract: Ants from the genus Rhytidoponera (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) are known for specific type of social organization in which the colony can be occupied by unrelated nestmates. This thesis reviews molecular methods and markers available for study of population structure of social insects with the particular reference to Rhytidoponera ants.
