Abstract: Until recently, it was assumed that subterranean rodents are unable to locate food sources without direct contact. Evolution of sociality in African mole-rats according to AFDH is based just on this random foraging. However, recent studies indicate that some subterranean species could be able to use plant chemicals (kairomones) for searching for food. In my bachelor thesis, I reviewed literature on foraging strategies in subterranean rodents. Particularly, I focused also on random versus nonrandom food searching in context of social evolution in African mole-rats.
